One week passed and the dream of his old rival continued to torture him in his sleep. His lack of restful sleep because of that and because of his other condition was beginning to show and his tanned skin was paling and he was so dark around the eyes that even Kiba had teased him about looking more and more like a certain Kazekage.
His mood was dull and he couldn¢¥t even muster the fake ¢¥happy idiot` mode anymore either.
¡°What is wrong with you Naruto?¡± Sakura asked when he visited her at the hospital after his weekly check-up with the Hokage.
¡°Nothing Sakura-chan I¢¥m just not sleeping too well lately,¡± he told her after he accepted her offer to eat dinner with her at Ichiraku¢¥s¡¦ as he had done every day for the past month.
It¢¥s wasn¢¥t like they were dating¡¦ it was just lunch since they both worked nearby and because he knew that Baa-chan had asked Sakura to make sure that he ate something.
Sakura was working at the hospital and Naruto had been confined to a desk job by the Hokage in the office building next to the hospital.
The pink haired medic didn¢¥t know why Naruto had been forced to take a desk job but she hoped that Tsunade had sensed that she was interested in the blonde in a romantic way¡¦ and that she was giving Sakura a chance to claim Naruto for herself.
Sakura was waiting for Naruto to ask her out on a date but he hadn¢¥t yet¡¦ probably because she used to turn him down all the time. Her opinion on that matter had changed drastically lately though.
For nearly six months she had felt incredible attracted to this new Naruto¡¦ he was calm, quiet and not grinning like an idiot anymore. She knew that it had been an act all along¡¦ but she just couldn¢¥t see him as a potential lover and much less husband material as long he had acted like a child.
Now he was behaving like a real man and he was the perfect candidate to become her husband since he kept his promises, was honest, hardworking and loyal¡¦. Even though he looked a bit worn out lately.
¢¥¡¦ must be stress from the shit-load of paperwork Tsunade throws at him all the time, ` she thought. ¡°Maybe he needs a vacation or a nice and romantic night out.¡±
Another thing that had convinced her to ask him to join him for lunch that day nearly a month ago was that she had watched some random girl trying to hit on Naruto in the middle of the street when he was on his way to see Tsunade at the hospital.
Sakura had felt jealous and had finally realized that she loved Naruto and cherished him more than she had allowed herself to admit till now.
She knew that her crush on Sasuke had been futile since he loved no one except himself and he would probably never return to Konoha anyway¡¦ No, Naruto¡¦ the damn hot and very cute blonde was the right man for her.
And now here they were¡¦ accompanying each other for lunch at Ichiraku¢¥s as they had done every day ever since she had asked him to join her the first time.
¡°Are you having nightmares or is something else the matter? Is this why you have to see Tsunade-sama once a week for the past year?¡± She asked him while they entered the small but cozy ramen stand.
¡°¡¦ Um¡¦ nightmares¡¦ yeah¡¦ I¢¥m dreaming of¡¦ someone and I just can¢¥t figure out why. It¢¥s not like I have any clues or even rumors about that persons whereabouts for more than eight months now,¡± Naruto told her after he ordered a bowl of miso ramen for both of them. He had no intention to discuss his current state of health with her as it meant that he would never make her leave his side again before the end.
¡°¡¦ What kind of dream? You are dreaming of brining Sasuke home again, aren¢¥t you? Or about him fighting his brother again and die trying?¡± She had been certain that Naruto had finally given up on that old promise to bring their former teammate home¡¦ a promise she wished that she could take back since it still seemed to hunt him.
She knew that he had had nightmares of Sasuke fighting Itachi and losing and end up dying far away from Naruto, all alone in the darkness¡¦ He had had these dreams ever since Tsunade had ordered him to stay inside the walls of Konoha nearly eight months ago but she had hoped that Naruto was over it by now.
¡°Not exactly¡¦¡± Naruto told her while looking deeply into his untouched bowl of steamy ramen. ¡°He was back at the mansion in the Uchiha district and he wasn¢¥t alone. He had some new companions by his side and his eyes¡¦ they were so different and I don¢¥t mean like the Mangekyo Sharingan¡¦ this was something else¡¦ and he was calling out to me¡¦ asking me to come to see him.¡±
¡°¡¦ And what happens when you do?¡± She asked with growing concern. This was edging to an obsession and she feared that Naruto was suffering greatly from Sasuke¢¥s deflection even after all these years.
¡°¡¦ He told me that he was pleased that I finally came and then I wake up. It freaks me out and not even Baa-chan knows what to do¡¦ though she gave me these pills,¡± he told her while handing her a small orange bottle with a prescription note on it.
The pills were also meant to take the edge of the pain since one pill would drug his mind, dulling the pain while two would make him fall into a dreamless sleep that would last for hours.
He had thought about taking them all at once a few times but had always decided against it since he thought of suicide like it was choosing the easy way out... and he wasn¢¥t in that much pain¡¦ yet.
¡°¡¦ These are rather strong sleeping pills Naruto though with Kyuubi and your metabolism¡¦ if Tsunade-sama deems it safe then I think you should try it. You look like you need a good nights sleep.¡±
¡°But what if something goes wrong?¡± Naruto said while raising his hand to signal Ayame that they needed a refill though he hadn¢¥t finished his bowl yet.
¡°¡¦ You could invite me to dinner tonight and then sleep at my house afterwards. I would be there to keep an eye on you and help you if something goes wrong,¡± she suggested while a rosy blush spread across her cheeks.
¡°¡¦ Take you to dinner¡¦ and sleep at¡¦ your place? Tonight?¡± He asked while raising a golden eyebrow while she just nodded eagerly towards him.
¡°Of course you will Naruto-kun, you can¢¥t say no to a cute girl like Sakura-chan now can you?¡± Old man Ichiraku chuckled after he replaced their bowls with full ones.
Naruto felt like he didn¢¥t have a saying in this and so he just decided to eat his food and let the others talk.

¡°I found Blondie and just as you expected the pink haired girl was all over him,¡± a blue haired man said with a wide smirk gracing his lips. ¡°She practically forced him to take her out to dinner tonight and she demanded that he should take some strong drugs that the moody Hokage gave him because you disturb his sleep all the time. Then she wanted him to sleep at her house tonight while she would surely love to drool all over him¡¦ if not even molesting him in his sleep¡¦ I hope he¢¥ll bring a p.j and not just sleep in his boxers like he did last night.¡±

Hell, she had only picked Sasuke as her object of desire because of his name, his wealth and looks. She had never been to his home, never asked him what he wanted or liked and probably never even cared¡¦ Sasuke was only meant to be a trophy and nothing else.
Sakura had changed a few months ago and now he had to find a way to let her down easily¡¦ before she got to deeply involved with him. ¢¥She probably thinks that I got a desk job because Tsunade wants me as her successor¡¦ though the truth is far from it, ` he thought sadly.
