Chapter 19

The plan had changed. They weren't going to leave everyone else was. No, they stayed and waited. The Master said it was bound to be a fight worth staying for so, as much a killer as she was, she'd stayed behind. And because she was ordered too. Mostly for the fighting. Intel had it that the Kyuubi was amid the team coming to storm their lair and she had heard from the Master and Kabuto that he was a force to be reckoned with. Or that's what a source from one of the few cities he'd desolated had said. Apparently he killed on command without remorse for man, woman or child. He killed the old and the sick, not caring if there was a way they could be cured and he felt nothing. Just remembering when she tried to feel nothing made her inwardly shutter. How was it possible for him to manage? Other than the fact the Master had called him Kyuubi due to possessing the demon fox.

Maybe the fox had something to do with it? Yes, that was more likely than anything her brain came up with. As she lay in wait, her mind was moving a million miles a minute. It always had. She was a strategist. A calculator. Her brain was constantly moving with possible outcomes of an event or events, as the case may have been. She could thank Kabuto for that. He did the same thing on a much larger scale. He even planned for failures. She however, did not. No, she wouldn't fail at all and so far, she never had. She couldn't afford to fail. Unlike kabuto, she did not possess a rapid healing ability and if she was punished, she would heal slowly and scar. She had a scar on the back of her hand to prove that. Even though the Master didn't want his property damaged, he was not above doing it himself.

In fact, he had punished her just a day ago and that had caused her to go into convulsions and faint. The punishment had gotten more severe after that. he'd produced a whip seemingly out of thin air because she got a nose bleed during an exercise and woken up later than she was scheduled. After five lashings, she felt the blood pouring down her back and she'd fainted. When she woke up, she'd been strapped to a table hooked to more tubes and machines than she could ever remember. The Master had injected her with an antigen that had sped up the healing process but given her a slight fever. When he'd finally let her go, she had been feeling a lot better than she ever had but vowed to herself never to get a nose bleed again, never to wake up later again and to never faint. The punishment was too severe.

Three days she waited there. She moved only in slow, short movements when she needed to drink or chew on something to keep her stomach satisfied. The Master and kabuto were on the top floors but, they wouldn't be engaging the enemy but simply...welcoming them. Engagement was her job. One she would take seriously. She had competition now. The Kyuubi. Kabuto mentioned something about a pink haired kunoichi that she couldn't, under any circumstances get his by and a silver haired man who wore his hetai-ait over his left eye. In front of him, she could not use any of the secret jutsu's that the Master had shown her because, he could turn them back against her. he was called "The Copy Nin." The pink haired shinobi was "Konoha's Fury." Wherever she got the name, it wasn't very appealing. It plainly sucked but Hikime didn't tell that to Kabuto, or the Master. They also mentioned something about someone with black hair and swirling red eyes. She was under no circumstances to engage him in battle but if he challenged her, she was to turn tail and escape. She didn't favor the fact of running but when she was ordered to do something, she did it. Without question. Ever.

When finally she heard a few crashes, she knew it was time. Letting the shadows envelop her, she closed her eyes, squatted down and waited. Even in white clothes she was invisible to the naked eye and she would be invisible to the Kyuubi's nose. They thought ahead and disguised her scent bt it wouldn't last much longer. They had been expected a day sooner. Oh well. All she needed was to take them one on one or two on one and they would be finished. Quickly. What she hadn't planned for was a kunai to embed two centimeters from her head. She had been found, and she hadn't heard anyone coming.

"Hey." Hikime froze, utterly. her breathing even stopped. She opened her eyes but left them closed enough so not to give away her position if that shot had just been a lucky guess. "You can come out now. And it wasn't a lucky guess." That voice. Could it be? Yes, it was. She saw. Black clothing, white hair, black eyes, two red spots exactly two and a half centimeters apart right above each eye.

"Who are you?" She rose slowly to her full height of exactly four foot. Not very intimidating and she was often picked on by the other sound shinobi for her height but she quickly disposed of them. Or more rightly, their tongues.

"Told you I'd be coming. But, it seems you had planned on leaving...glad you stayed."

"Aito?"

"The one and only." The girl smiled and bowed. "Pleasure to finally see you in person Hikime-san." Aito stood back up and pointed. "This is Sakura, this is Sai, that one is our Father and this one," she walked over to a blond man, "this is our other father." She beamed. "Oh, and that one is Kakashi." She rolled her eyes.

"You've told me of these people before."

"Yup! And now you get to meet them in the flesh. So, what do you say about coming back to Konoha with us and saving me the trouble of dragging you back?" She was utterly serious Hikime realized. She may have been smiling big and brightly but she wasn't joking.

"My Father is just over there." She pointed with her sleeve covered hand. Orochimaru's laugh rang out through the room. The one that had been called her Father froze and turned in the direction of the Master.

"What have you done to her?"

"Nothing Sasuke-kun." Orochimaru practically purred. Kabuto stepped out of the shadows, two steps behind the Master and even though she shouldn't have, Hikime felt a sense of relief at that. She wouldn't be fighting these people alone. She had already gaged them all a threat and jounin level or higher. Special jounin or ANBU at least. Although, she heard a hiss and when she looked up, her left eyebrow twitched. The Master was sporting a cut on his cheek. Hikime let out a growl that rumbled from her chest. In four steps, she was across the room and standing in front of the Master and Kabuto, head down, staring at the intruding shinobi through white hair.

"K-"

"Silence!" Hikime's voice was low and seething with malice and the promise of death. When she looked back on the girl who looked like an exact copy of her, she felt something in the pit of her stomach but tramped it down with a hand of steel. "You will die for that mistake." Just as she was about to lunge at the four foot shinobi, the blond stepped forward, a chakra shuriken in his hand.

"It was me."

"Then you will die!" She attacked with a ferociousness that did Orochimaru proud. If Kimimaru had lived, he might have been just as proud. The bone users blood ran strong through her veins and it seemed, even she could not escape the need for a bloody brawl. When she reached the blond, she reached to her shoulder where a bone slipped free of her shirt and grabbed the short sword as it presented itself to her. But, when she brought it down, she was stopped. In the brief moment of surprise, she looked across from her and saw swirling red eyes. She quickly looked away and jumped back. She noted movement and was on it like butter. The one Aito had called her father had gone for the Master. That would not be tolerated. She released his hand and sent a kick to his sternum, winding him at the same time she knocked him away.

"I think, Hime, they do not yet understand your point. Maybe you should explain it to them ne?" Hikime took the few steps separating her from the Master, keeping her front of the enemy and when she was just a hairs breath away from him, she reached out, grabbed his hand and put it atop her head. Crossing her arms over her chest, she stared at the enemy shinobi.

"I am a tool to be used and discarded when no longer necessary. The Master saved me and for that, I owe him my life to use as he sees fit. I am his living shield and none shall pass me to do him harm. he is my Father, my savior and above all, my Master. Touch him and feel the wrath of perfection."

"My my, never thought you'd be so damn egotistical." Aito shook her head and looked to Orochimaru. "You know man, you are vile to the lowest degree." She pointed at him with a sleeve clad finger. "Taking my twin from me, raising her with messed up ideals and then using her when she gets old enough to further your own experimentations...Great Ones above you are a worse monster than my Uncle!" Aito threw up her hands and huffed. "Just give her back you stupid, old bastard or I'll rip your head off your shoulders and feed it to Manda!"

"And how do you know Manda child?" Oh, he didn't sound happy. Well, goal achieved. Piss off the enemy, goad them into attacking and then conquer.

"You aren't the only one able to summon snakes jii-san." Aito looked to her sister. "Are you really going to fight me? We are twins, equally matched. It would end in a stale mate."

"I am not your twin and you are nothing close to an equal." Well, she sounded pretty confident.

"Fine, I'll make a wager with you." Hikime stopped and looked up to Orochimaru. The sannin seemed to think about it for a moment before nodding. Hikime looked back to Aito and the black clad girl continued. "We fight a one on one battle. No one attacks the snaky bastard or the freak of nature over there while we are fighting. If I win, you come back with me, forever forgetting this place and your stupid sense of dooooty. If you win, you can have me, free of charge and I will come willingly. If it ends in a stale mate, well, I continue to come after you until I win. Sound good to you?"

"Even if you win I will not come with you."

"if you are unconscious, you can't fight much." Hikime smiled and what no one saw, other than Kabuto and Naruto, was both girls had their hands behind their backs. It didn't take a megalomaniac scientist to know they were crossing their fingers.

"Agree."

"Good, let's go Kai."

"Do not call me that." Aito sighed and shook her head, stepping forward. They looked at each other for a moment. Then Hikime slipped her shirt free of her body and Aito watched, in relative horror, as her sisters ribs started protruding from her torso, her shoulder bones slipped free of her skin like spikes and she looked...just like a porcupine. Hikime, having retracted the bone sword into her skin, let it slip free of her skin once more to grab it up and let it rest against her right shoulder. She was ambidextrous so she could use it with either hand equally but she actually favored her right hand. It was something that made her like others and not a complete monster, not that she minded the monster part.

Hikime watched as Aito's eyes phased from black to red. They started whirling and Hikime felt the need to look away so she did. She looked to Aito's hands and watched as they pulled out a kunai and then she reached up to her hair and pulled out four senbon needles.

"I did not agree to these terms!"

"Hikime!" Neither girl stopped what they were doing. When Sasuke and orochimaru tried to step forward, they were stopped. Kabuto put a hand on the sannin's shoulder while Naruto grabbed Sasuke's wrist. Naruto leaned over and whispered something that went unheard by everyone else, into Sasuke's ear. The Uchiha stopped and looked at him. Kabuto did the same and orochimaru hissed, reaching out to snatch Hikime by the hair. His hand was bounced back. He frowned. "What is this?"

"I'm sorry Orochimaru-sama. I cannot let you interfere."

"Who are you to order me child?!"

"I am the tool that protects you, the shield that softens the blow." Hikime looked up at him and he felt his breath stop. "I am perfection and I will prove my worth." She turned away and looked to Aito. Hikime bent at the knee, placing one foot in front of her and one behind, her left shoulder turning to face her look alike. When her left arm extended towards Aito, she said one word. "Die!"

The projectiles came at her almost faster than she could see but, nothing was that fast. After she dodged the last one, she was dodging a sword and body. When she got solid footing, she turned and forced chakra to her left hand. When she drew it back and hit the ground in front of her, a wall of earth came up to block Hikime's attack and allowed her enough time to prepare for the next one. Never attack an opponent until you knew their strengths and could find their weaknesses. It was lesson one in the academy. Okay, two but the first one didn't count. She'd never talked her way out of a fight because she didn't like talking, she liked fighting. Being a shinobi in the service of Konoha was perfect for her and she wouldn't quit until she died.

The senbon she'd placed in the earth with her punch shot out at her sister from the back while she went for a direct frontal feint. As predicted, her sister had the same weakness as she did. Protect the eyes and heart. When Aito jumped away, she threw her kunai and watched as it was deflected.

"Stop playing and fight."

"I am fighting! Can't you see me fighting?!" Aito waved her hands around. Her sister followed the motions. Good. She wasn't paying attention to the eyes anymore. The red swirling sped up and when Aito brought her hands in front of her, she formed twelve seals in a matter of milliseconds. She breathed in an impossible amount of air that expanded her diaphragm to an unnatural size and when she breathed out, a giant ball of rolling fire exploded from her mouth. Thanks to training with the Rookie nine, she was able to use ninjutsu attacks without saying them out loud. She had to add an extra seal and if her concentration was broken for even a second, she lost the jutsu but it came in very handy when fighting.

"Is that what I think it is?" Sakura looked at Sasuke.

"Katon."

"That's not just the regular Uchiha fireball Sasuke." He turned and stared into Sakura's eyes. "Whatever. She's your kid." Shaking her head, the pink haired Kunoichi looked across the ring to Kabuto. His attention was on her as well. She had a score to settle with that rat bastard and when the kids knocked themselves out, she would do just that. Naruto watched the fight intently. Their defense was nearly impenetrable. Nearly perfect. But not one-hundred percent. They stopped their attacks at the last second and softened the blow they dealt. They weren't actually trying to kill each other, just prove dominance. So far, just as Aito had stated, they were equally matched. Aito couldn't hit Hikime without getting stabbed and Hikime dodged every missile thrown her way and sent out some of her own. Hikime couldn't see Aito move but she could sense her, or that's what it seemed like and Aito could see every move Hikime made, and sense her. It was a huge advantage, but she was only using it to block and parry. What were they doing?

Hikime dodged an attack aimed for her thigh and stood, slowly circling Aito. Her calculating had changed, her strategy being edited. She would not believe they were evenly matched! Never. No one had bested her in battle, unless it was Kabuto or the Master, and she would not let some puny...freak defeat her! The anger was running through her veins like liquid lava. She felt it building in pressure until she was sure it would explode like a geyser. She took up position again and when her look alike attacked, she could see her movements! She felt something in her eyes but she wasn't about to wipe it away.

Aito watched her sisters face change, watched her eyes phase from black to red. She must never have activated it before. To say she was proud would be an understatement, but she was agitated. Why wouldn't she just see reason? Was it so impossible to believe that Sasuke and Naruto were her fathers? Why wouldn't she see that orochimaru, the snake bastard, was the epitome of evil, next to her Uncle of course, and leave him? The agitation made her attack. Hikime reached up and pulled out one of the spikes in her shoulders and threw it at her. Without thinking, Aito held out her hand and watched the bone sink into her skin. There was no pain. It was as if her body accepted the bone. She would have been shocked but she couldn't afford it.

The fight changed in seconds. The girls' movements became more fluid, graceful. Where one moved, the other moved opposite. It was as if it was all choreographed but in reality, it was not. They were no longer softening their blows, trying to establish dominance. They were in it to win it. He watched from a hidden alcove as the fight progressed from one stage to the next. Hikime hadn't been lying when she called herself perfect. She and her sister were perfect. They moved in sync, each one attacking and defending in turn. When Hikime threw a bone or used it to attack, Aito caught it and returned it. When Aito used her strength and speed, Hikime countered with precisely placed moments of attack. They even wiped blood away at the same time albeit with opposite hands. He was actually proud to call them Uchiha, unlike his brother who should be put out of his misery, but, his misery was Itatchi's pleasure so it was a win-win at the moment.

Kisame came back toting a case that was a meter long and half a meter wide. Itatchi looked it over, only able to see in black and white, but he knew it was the object they were after. Now that they had it, they stepped out behind Orochimaru and Kabuto. The two sound shinobi turned and their eyes widened. Kisame broke the case and the sound of glass shattering stopped the fight. Hikime stared in horror as Kisame grabbed the arm and held out a blade to the beating pulse in the wrist. She used her chakra to warp her steps to the shark-man and just as she grabbed the arm, she felt a sharp, piercing pain through her abdomen. She pushed it aside and grabbed the arm, throwing the chakra she was extending to her limbs for flash movement and threw it at the giant of a man. he went sailing through the stone wall. Hikime looked at the other and shock filled her features but quickly fell away. She stared deeply into his eyes and saw something. Humor. When she looked down, she noticed a katana stuck all the way through her.

She moved away from the strange man, the one that looked almost like the one the Master called Sasuke and looked at the Master. he was bleeding. His neck was bleeding and kabuto had fallen, stabbed through the heart and decapitated. Her world was going blank but not once did she let go of the arm. She didn't notice it was cut and bleeding away it's life essance. She was too distracted by the sight of her Master dying. When she couldn't walk, she crawled over to his side and pulled his head into her lap. She pulled the blade from torso and tossed it aside, looking down into pitless black eyes. The Master reached up and patted her head. She felt wetness fall down her cheeks and he smiled. His face suddenly contorted and his body spasmed and it was then that his soul fled his body. The wetness grew furious and she didn't realize it was tears mixed with blood. She didn't care. Hikime stared down at the lifeless face of the man she'd known her whole life.

He was dead. As impossible as it was, he was gone. No more. She felt weak and found herself falling backwards, body shivering, breath coming in heaving gasps. Good, she would be able to serve her Master in the next life. She was about to let go and fly away to find him when something forced her back. She screamed with the agony of it and when she opened her eyes, she saw a face that looked so much life hers. A voice came to her ears and she realized Aito's lips were moving.

"I will never part from you again."

"D...die...."

"No." And with that said, Aito leaned forward and kissed her sisters lips gently. Placing one hand on Hikime's head and one on her heart, Aito called to the one part of her that was still unfamiliar. There were screams of horror, shouts and the sound of rushing feet, but it was already too late. Aito looked up at Naruto and smiled big. he reached for her but his hand caught air. Sasuke was being held back by Sakura and he was screaming, crying and fighting to get to them but he just couldn't. Itatchi watched from a distance, interest officially peeked.

She felt warm, cozy almost. Content. Full. Her heart didn't hurt anymore. She was sad yes, the loss of her Master made her very sad but she didn't feel...empty anymore. She didn't feel alone. She was tired though and when she found herself sitting next to Aito in their dream world, she actually smiled.

"What did you do Aito?"

"I told you I would never leave you Kai, now the only way we can be separated is by death."
They looked at each other and Aito reached over, grabbing her sisters hand. "We are joined now, forever. I put two and two together when i was in the hospital. We might go blind and we might die from some incurable blood disease later in life but we will at least have each other for a while. It's better than nothing right?"

"I don't know what to do...I mean..."

"Don't worry. I'll help you! I mean, I'm not dead! I live inside your body now. If you want, we can change places every once in a while you know, when things get to difficult for you to handle?"

"That sounds good."
Hikime looked to the joined hands and squeezed tightly. "What do I call them? Him?"

"Father will do for the one with short black hair, as for the blond...well, he's still being worked on but I guess 'da' is fine. As for the one that looks like our father...well...he's actually our Uncle and evil. He destroyed our entire clan when father was younger and he just wants to watch father suffer. Even though I would like to slit his throat and watch him die slowly, he has proven himself useful and he might prove to be further use in the future. Killing him is entirely up to you but, getting a little revenge for what he did to da is in order I think."

"What did he do?"

"Physical death would have been quicker."
Hikime understood that with more clarity than anything else she had in her life. Even more so than needing to follow orders so punishment stayed at bay.

"They are really gone now aren't they?"

"Yes, they are. And you aren't in a dark place anymore. I am afraid of the dark, just so you know."

"So am I."

"And spiders. They really freak me out, but, if Shino-san has got ahold of them, I can stand to be around them."

"Who is this 'Shino'?"

"Don't worry, I'll explain everything later but right now, I'm sleepy."
Hikime nodded. So was she. They laid back on the grass together, in their dream world and curled around each other. Aito laid her head on Hikime's shoulder, while Hikime wrapped her arms around her sister's neck. Their legs entwined and there they lay, sleeping peacefully for the first time in five years.

It was nice to be home.
