Playing It Cool
Chp 21: Playing it cool
With a start, Sakura awoke from her slumber, disoriented, dazed. The shrill ringing of her alarm clock continued to shriek in the early morning silence as she tiredly rubbed her eyes and groggily stretched across the satin sheets to hit the ‘Snooze’ button. She blinked a few times, rubbing her temples. Squinting at the alarm clock, she discerned the time. She had to start getting ready. She was running a little late, even accounting for Kakashi’s chronic tardiness. Her lips curved as her eyes closed. Mmm, Kakashi… She would be seeing him soon. And the other two. Her smile faded, giving way to a grim expression. She had to play it cool today. She had to keep up appearances. Briefly, she considered the idea of telling them. It would be a weight off her shoulders, not having to pretend that nothing was going on, that was for sure! And most times she felt like shouting it out to the world anyway… ‘Hmm…’
She hadn’t managed to talk to Sasuke since that late afternoon she had cut short to join Kakashi, she thought with a twinge of guilt, even as she sleepily giggled remembering that it had been well worth it! But based on that conversation, she had gleaned that he was interested in someone and therefore, not her. She supposed it might be okay to tell him… But then again, she didn’t want any possibility of him judging Kakashi and her relationship with him. And Naruto… She groaned. He would definitely have a hell of a lot to say about that. No, it would be better to just leave it between her and Kakashi for as long as possible.
With that decision firmly in mind, Sakura let her consciousness drift as she allowed herself a few more precious minutes of sleep before the alarm blared again. Maybe dream a little of Kakashi. She smiled. ‘Mmm, Kakashi…’ RIIIIIIINNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!! Sakura jolted awoke, sitting up in a daze, her sleepy eyes widening, her tousled hair tumbling about her shoulders. RIIIIIIINNNNNGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!! Collapsing against the pillows, Sakura groaned.

Three male heads turned to look at the latest arrival. One had been squatting, his tall frame compressed with his arms folded against his knees, blond head resting on his sleeves. The other two had been leaning their lanky frames on either red railing, arms folded against a hard chest, one leg folded against the other at the ankle. The only difference was that the one with the silver hair falling over his hitae-ate was a few inches taller than the one with the raven locks, despite his slouching position. Sakura’s eyes were immediately drawn to study the slouching, silver-haired one. He looked hot in his jounin uniform. Her eyes roved over his body. Thoughts of shower sex flitted naughtily through her mind. At that moment, his visible eye met hers. And stared. Her cheeks reddened. She gave a slight shake of her pink head, forcing her eyes to focus instead on the scroll he held in his hand.
Fingering the hem of her skirt, she waved at the waiting three. “Sorry boys…,” she called out sheepishly, “hope you haven’t been waiting too long!” Sasuke looked at her silently before smirking slightly. Naruto got up stretching before plonking his hands against his hips. He looked perplexed. “You’re later than Kakashi, Sakura-chan!” They were supposed to berate Kakashi together! Kakashi took a step towards her. “Long shower, Sakura?” he called out pleasantly. The dark eye looking into her wide green ones were knowing, meaningful. The memory of the cold, wet bathroom wall pressing into her back as he thrusted into her hard, the water flowing over their wet bodies as they moaned, flitted through her mind again. Her cheeks flushed in mortification. She couldn’t do this! She had to keep up appearances! She had to play it cool… They had to play it cool! How he could be so utterly blasé, she didn’t know. Managing to bombard her mind with thoughts of them yet managing to look reasonably…normal…for their comrades. So utterly Kakashi…
“Ahem… Ahh, sorry, I overslept,” she began, darting a meaningful look at him. Damn. He looked amused. “Tiring night?” Kakashi said. He even sounded amused! She didn’t know how she could get through this day. Her cheeks were just too damned reactive to play it his way. True enough, her cheeks heated even more as her blush deepened. “Just- just a little…,” her hoarse reply came as she purposely moved forward to stand beside Naruto. Passing Kakashi, her bare arm brushed against the sleeves of his shirt. The breeze ruffled their hair. A roseate strand draped over his clad shoulder. His heady scent wafted towards her. She paused for the tiniest of moments. Her breath caught. A memory of herself wrapped in the same shirt against a cool night on his balcony drifted into her mind. It had been after their first time. Her first time. He had joined her on the balcony, his arms wrapped around her. After their brief sojourn on said balcony, he had carried her into the bedroom and onto his bed. And another bout of sex had followed. With her still wearing his shirt. Sakura swallowed, forcing herself to plant herself firmly next to the boisterous blonde ninja. She definitely needed his distraction that morning! Luckily, neither of the two seemed to notice anything was out of the ordinary.
Kakashi turned to face them, the scroll pertaining to the details of their mission today held in his hand. “You’ll be happy, or otherwise, to know that we don’t have a difficult mission today. Everyone’s at peace with each other. No dangerous covert missions to bordering countries. Not even any dignitaries to escort.” His dark eye crinkled in a smile, one arm reaching behind his head to rub it thoughtfully. Sakura sighed inwardly. She liked it when he did that. So boyish, so adorable… ‘Sigh…’ His sexy voice interrupted her thoughts, “All we have to do is get some herbs that only grow at the Cliff Waterfalls at the border. That’s as dangerous as it gets for today.” As expected, Naruto exploded, “Get. HERBS???!!!???!!!” Even Sasuke looked a little put out. “It can’t be helped. The academy students are busy with their graduating exams today and most of the Chuunins are busy with that. So the genins are helping the Godaime clear out stuff at her headquarters. Unless you would rather do that?” Kakashi’s smile was as pleasant as ever. Naruto blanched. “No, no, the cliffs sound good,” he said hurriedly. Yeah, maybe he could take a swim or something. He looked over at Sakura as she said, “Kakashi probably only accepted this because it was Team 7 Day! Maybe we could have a picnic at the waterfalls or something?” Naruto entertained the idea of dining on the cliffs after a relaxing swim. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad…
Kakashi looked over at her, his one eye lazily drinking in the sight of her in her uniform, face flushed probably due to her self-consciousness at having just diffused Naruto’s outburst in his defence. She simply wasn’t the type to be able to separate herself from her emotions. He loved the way her blush complemented her rosy hair perfectly. Damn, she was beautiful. His intense gaze dropped a few watts as he noticed her blush deepening. She probably knew he was staring at her. He chuckled to himself. She was adorable. He knew that he was probably making it hard for her to act normally around Naruto and Sasuke but he couldn’t help himself! He loved seeing her blush. And he loved letting his gaze speak to her, forcing her to recall events of the night before. Giving her the slightest of winks with an imperceptible nod of his head, he turned to begin leading their group on to the site of their mission. His spirits were high. He felt like he couldn’t stop smiling. At times like these, he was truly grateful for his mask! He was crazy, wasn’t he? She had been right, of course. It was perfectly alright for shinobis of their level to turn it down. Certainly, the other jounins were enjoying the rare reprieve. The newly inducted genins could easily do it. There really was no hurry. He sighed. He had only accepted this mission because that way, he would be able to spend volumes of time with her without censure. Grinning to himself, he rubbed his masked cheek. ‘Crazy… And then they were heading out of Konoha’s gates.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sasuke trailed behind the other three. Naruto, rambunctious and loud as ever, chattered to Sakura non-stop. He smirked. Some things would never change. He acknowledged Naruto’s maturation over the years but whenever the four of them were thrown together, it was like they had never been apart. Of course, Sasuke had to admit that he wouldn’t really want it any other way. Not that he would ever say anything, of course.
His onyx gaze drifted to the shapely legs of the woman walking beside the blonde ninja. Silently, his eyes drank in the lushness of her curves, admiring the view. He hadn’t managed to talk to her since that interrupted afternoon a month ago. Mostly, he regretted it. He wondered what it would be like now if he had managed to reveal his feelings. Would they be walking alongside each other at this particular moment, him playing it cool but protective and her unable to hide her feelings for him, all simpering blushes and shy demeanour? His feelings for her hadn’t changed. Maybe he should try telling her again sometime today? He analysed the possibilities. The mission today was a total breeze, he couldn’t fathom why Kakashi bothered to accept it! It wasn’t as if he cared for these D-level missions! Maybe the man was more sentimental than he let on… But he would have to thank him for it. Because he imagined it would be more than easy to whisk Sakura off to somewhere private for a while. And he would finally be able to tell her how he felt about her. And maybe tonight, they would be playing out a particular dream he once had in the confines of his large bed. Sasuke smirked. He definitely liked the idea of that...

A/N: I’ll try and update as soon as I can. Mid-semester break is coming soon and I’ll probably have more time to write then. (Our Easter was way too short. 5 days! *sob* 5 days!) As always, please R&R=)
