Chapter 21: Chuunin Exams II
We were told to wait at the Academy’s training grounds to the Second Part of the Chuunin exams. We have been here for several hours now, and the other participants of the test are starting to get restless. They have to learn to be patient… I’m, but that is thanks to my two senseis, how have the extremely bad habit of running late for every meeting they have.
But I must admit that I have been wondering what is this all about. Historically, the second test is a survival exam, or at least it has been for the past years since the beginning of these exams. But we can’t do a survival test in the Academy’s training grounds, now can we? Of all the training grounds in Konoha, this is the less dangerous one.
I was kind of expecting it to be at the Forest of Death, or another of the dangerous training grounds, like five years ago. But, coming to think of it, one of the proctors of this exam is Shikamaru. I can already feel the thrill of what that freaking genius has planned for this part of the exam, it can be virtually anything.
At last, five hours after the time we were asked to be here(That was at 2:oo am.), the proctors of the Second Part of the Chuunin Exams arrived in a poof of smoke. The complaints of the other participants didn’t wait to start, launching themselves to the unfazed examiners.
“This is way too troublesome…”
“Okay little Genins, shut up and listen!,” Kiba yelled above the heads of the pissed Genins, accompanied by Akamaru’s barks, “We are the proctors for this part of the test, and now we are going to explain how this is going to work.”
“I will say this just one time, so pay attention. We are going to distribute among you this two scrolls,” Shikamaru says while pulling a pair of scrolls from a bag, “When we tell you to, you will open the white scroll and read it, if you read it before we tell you to, you will immediately fail this part of the exam and you will be sent home. After you read the white scroll, read the black one. If you read it before you read the white one, you will be sent home.”
“Now, before we give you the scrolls, you will have to sign this form, so if things get nasty and you get hurt or killed, we won’t be held responsible,” Choji says with a paper on his hand, “Now make a line so we can get this over with.”
Quickly, a line is formed before the desk where the three are at. I’m at the end of the line, because I was sitting way on the back under some trees, so I could be as far as I could get from the noisy group. After some tedious minutes of standing on the line, finally my turn comes.
“Hey Kaji! Glad to see you man. I wanted to speak to you yesterday but I was way to busy with the preparations, ya know?”
“And what was that you wanted to speak with me of?”
“I heard from a very reliable source that you bitch-slapped Hanabi yesterday, right? Because she was badmouthing Hinata-chan and Neji?”
“You heard right, that little girl got to my nerves. Why, have a problem with it?”
“No, no! Exactly the opposite! That little brat had it coming, you got no idea of how much I wanted to do that before, but I didn’t want to cause any problems to Hinata-chan, because I was her teammate and all that, besides I didn’t want to be on the bad side of the Hyuugas. But you! You don’t have to worry about that! You have two of the Legendary Sannins getting you back, so the Hyuugas won’t say a thing, Hinata told me this morning. Right Shika?”
“Hai, off record, I think you did the right thing too.”
“Me too, it was awesome, the little cocky girl still has her face marked. I can’t say how good I felt when I saw her when she came to pick up her scroll.”
“I’m glad you approve, but can you please give me that form so I can get the scrolls?”
“Ohh, right sorry man, I almost forgot about that. Here ya go.” Kiba say handing me the form.
I quickly sign it and take the two scrolls, walking back to my previous spot under the trees to wait for more indication.
“Ok now, everybody has their scrolls?”
A chorus of yes answered Kiba’s question.
“Then open your white scrolls now.”
The murmur of paper and conversations between teammates filled the formerly quiet training grounds. I open my own scroll and start reading it, but… this is…
‘Oh shit!’
I quickly drop the scroll right before I feel pulled into it. A transport scroll, a new scroll recently developed by some investigator ninjas of Konoha. The mechanism is quite simple, two scrolls, one with the ninja and the other one in the place where the ninja wants to be transport to. It isn’t used so much because to this time, it only works on not so long distances and it is very similar to the summoning scroll anyway.
But at least this answers one of my questions, the Exam won’t be in the Academy’s training grounds, but somewhere else. But, that gives me another question: where?
Before I notice, I’m standing over another white scroll in a place I still can’t recognize. Well… we were told to open the black scroll after we read the white one, so I better do that now, maybe it will explain things. I open it and start reading out loud.
“The Second Part of the Chuunin Selection Exam is a Survival and Strategy Test. As you have noticed, you are no longer at the Academy grounds. You must figure out where you are and find a way to the center of the area you’re currently in. Sadly, it isn’t as easy as that. Each of you were assigned a tag with a number on your previous test. At the end of this scroll there is a number, you must track down and get the tag from the person with that number and go to the building on the center of the area, however, you must conserve your own tag in order to pass this part of the Exam. You are allowed to do whatever it takes to get your tag and conserve yours, as well to get it back in case it is taken from you. You can also pass the exam by gathering five tags, if you fail to get your target, or your tag is taken from you. The limit time for this test is five days, until dusk of the fifth day.”
‘So I must get the tag number 22, if I remember correctly it was from this guy from Iwa that took the exam before, five years ago with me. If he failed the exam for five years, he can’t be that good…’
‘ ‘ This exam is pretty interesting, don’t you think kit? ‘ ‘
‘Actually it is, they separated the teams and sent each member to a different location, to a place they don’t know where it is and give them a task. First they must get to know the place so they can find the center of it and get used to the landscape. It is difficult to track down other shinobis in unfamiliar grounds, that adds even more difficulty to the exam. The other participants will most likely scout the area and look for their teammates, that way their chances of get the tags will increase if they work as a team to get each one of them, because of the odds. It will be safer to travel in teams if they attacked, because it will be easier to defend themselves. That bastard of Shikamaru really made this test pretty difficult, the sadist…’
‘ ‘ It seems that you got it all. So, where are we? ‘ ‘
I turn my attention to my surroundings, analyzing them in order to figure out where I am. It is a pretty dense forest, the trees so close together that the sun can’t reach the ground because of them. The atmosphere is very humid and tick as well, the plants have big leaves, very tropical like. I smirk, I know where I am. This is the Forest of Death. So that lazy bastard made it here after all. Now the question is exactly in which part of the Forest of Death am I?
I decide to climb one of the many trees around to get a better view of the Forest, so maybe I can spot the Tower, or at least the Hokage Mountain, so I can locate myself. The problem with the trees here is that they are a little too slippery, and that makes them more difficult to climb than average trees.
When I reach the top at last, it doesn’t take me too long to figure out exactly where I am. I’m very close to that river where I caught some fish for lunch after the Sound three attacked us and Sasuke beat the life out of them, after they hurt Sakura and Fuzzy Eyebrows, with the help of that damned curse seal that mess his head every time he uses it. There was the place where Kabuto boarded us for the second time on that exam.
Speaking of the snake toy… I can smell him nearby. I bet all my nine tails that that Snake-bastard sent him to spy on me and gather information. It seems that I managed to draw his attention to me. This could be a good thing.
‘ ‘ A good thing indeed. ‘ ‘
‘Kyu, why the leaves stopped falling?’
‘ ‘ Oh, that? I did some changes, so when you speak to me, time doesn’t pass in the outside. I thought it could be bad for you to just zoom out when you speak to me, specially in battle, you could get yourself killed you know? ‘ ‘
‘Good point, thanks Kyu.’
‘ ‘ So, what are we going to do about the snake toy? ‘ ‘
‘Nothing.’
‘ ‘ Nothing? ‘ ‘
‘Yes, nothing?’
‘ ‘ Why? ‘ ‘
‘If he is here to gather information about me for Orochimaru, that means I got his attention.’
‘After that stunt you pulled with that boy looking girl at the cave in Iwa, I really think that you did. ‘ ‘
‘I still don’t know why would he want information on me, but if he keeps his attention on me instead of Sasuke, it could be a good thing. As much I will like to rip that snake toy to tiny little pieces for what he did five years ago, he still can prove useful. That’s why for now I will let him live and gather all the information he wants and make sure his and Orochimaru’s attention keeps on me.’
‘ ‘ Fine, but I really will want to reduce him to chopped meat. ‘ ‘
‘I know Kyu, I know.’
Well now, lets make Kabuto work. Now that I know where I am and where is the Tower, it is time to look for my prey. I activate my Infinite Vision and start scanning the whole area, in order to locate my prey as well as the rest of the participants. I don’t know which of them has to try to get my tag, so that makes everyone here my enemy.
As predicted, the Genins are scouting the Forest, trying to get used to it and at the same time, regrouping. Can’t really blame them though, I will do the same thing. If they go three against one, they have more possibilities of getting the tags. The first team to regroup is Hanabi’s, not a surprise after all, with the Byakugan, that can almost compete with my Infinite Vision, finding her teammates must be a piece of cake. I listen closely to their conversation, it seems that non of them got me.
That’s good, because even if I really don’t like her, I got nothing against her teammates and not enough against her to attack them if they come after me. Now that is something her Byakugan can’t do, she can see things at great distances, but she can’t hear them too.
Next team I found is Konohamaru’s. It looks like they were dumped pretty close to each other. They used some special kind of explosive to locate each other. Now I don’t know if that was really a smart thing to do, the explosives can draw the attention of potential enemies, because they give away their location. Lucky for me, non of them got me either, I don’t want to hurt them either.
I continue to scan the forest, amusing myself with the rest of the teams. I found my prey near the place I killed that giant snake that Orochimaru sent after me, the one that thought I will make a good meal and ended up chopped to pieces. One of the teams from Mizu got attacked by the blood sucking insects that live in the forest, poor fellows ended up dead when they were trying to bury their tags, they got ambushed by them.
The last team I found, was Sasuke’s. The method they used to find each other is a clear give away of what village they come from. I’m glad that no one is around to notice it, or has hearing acute enough to. They used a special little device that most Oto Genins carry around, that emit a sound in a special frequency that only Oto nins or people with a very acute hearing can notice. Now unfortunately for Mako, he’s the one that got my number. It is a pity, well actually is isn’t, but he’s doomed to fail the Exam.
Funny thing is that non of them know that I’m number four. Well, that will make the expressions on their faces even more priceless when they find out that they have to fight their supposed senpai if they want to pass the exam. Well, Sasuke wanted their bubbles popped, I guess it will be me the one to do it. Ironic…
Well, well, I think that it is already time for me to join the fun as well. Now, where is that guy from Iwa that decided to not look for his teammates, the overconfident idiot? It seems that he’s no longer next to the giant snake remains…
‘Ohhhh, kuso!! He’s targeting Konohamaru, so he was his prey? Kuso, kuso, kuso, kuso! Yes he failed the exam five times, but how could I forget that he failed four of that times because he killed his opponents on the final round when it was forbidden. I better hurry up and find them, I knew that those explosives were bad news!’
I sprint to the place where my young friends are, the trees and the ground around and under me becoming brown and green blurs as I take the fastest way over the tree tops, the only evidence of my pass through them are the rustle of leafs I leave behind me. I must hurry, Konohamaru, Moegi and Udon are still too young to die.
[Konohamaru’s POV.]
“Moegi, stay behind us!!”
We were planning our strategy for this part of the exam when this guy appeared out of no where and started attacking us. I somehow knew that the explosives were too much, Moegi somehow always use more than the necessary.
But now, we are royally screwed. I remember this guy from the Bingo Book Kaji-senpai’s borrowed us. It said that this guy was disqualified from the past four exams because he killed his opponents on the last round, and that was against the rules.
Unless a miracle happens, we are going to die. This part of the exam doesn’t have any rules regarding murder. We are going to die for sure, but if someone has to die, at least it won’t be my teammates.
“Udon, take Moegi and run, hide somewhere safe!”
“We are not leaving you alone Konohamaru-kun!”
“I said run Moegi!! He’s after me, not you. At least go look for help, but don’t stay here. Udon!! Take her!!”
“No! You are going to get killed if you fight him alone.!”
“Stop babbling and pay more attention to your fight!!” The guy from Iwa yelled at us. He threw a bunch of shurikens at us. Crap, we are out of ammo, we can’t deflect them! We are tired of running, and almost out of chakra as well. I guess we are going to die after all.
I close my eyes, waiting for the inevitable. The familiar sound of metal clashing against metal made my eyes snap open. The shurikens were defected by kunais, but how? Non of us had any left. The rustle of leafs over our heads made me look up. From where the sound came, a black blur jumped down.
The black clad figure that stands protectively in front of us, with his blond hair swaying on the almost non existent wind is very familiar, but my adrenaline filled mind can’t come up with who he is.
“Konohamaru, Moegi, Udon, are you too hurt?”
“Kaji-senpai?”
“Sorry for keeping you waiting. I got this now, so go find some place safe.”
“Alright… come one guys, you heard Kaji-senpai.”
I feel someone pulling me back along with Moegi. It seems that he’s the only one that still has enough mental clarity to understand what Kaji-senpai says and make his body move. I keep looking at the scene of those two ninjas, standing in front of the other, but still no making a move, until we make a turn and I can’t see them anymore.
[Back to Naruto’s POV.]
I glare to the Iwa shinobi in front of me. Kuroi was his name if I remember well. When he took the exam the first time, with me, he was already a sadistic bastard. But it seems that something happened after he failed the first time, because when he returned for the next year exam, he had turned into a murderer, that reminds me of Gaara, well, not so bad as Gaara, but close.
“So the little Genins called for back up, huh? You are a little too old for being a Genin don‘t you think?”
“Looks who’s talking, you are older than me.”
“So, are you here to talk or what?”
“Actually I came for your tag, number 22.”
“So why did you helped does kids escape, huh?”
“You are my prey, and I don’t like it when my prey attack one of my comrades.”
“I’m your prey? Well, I’m sorry, but the predator is about to become prey.”
“Really? Well, lets fight and see who is the prey here.”
I take my sword out of his sheath and point it at him.
“This is Kitsunetsuki, lets see what you can do against her.”
I stand there, smirking at him until he got annoyed at me and launched his first attack. Fool, when you attack while you are angry, or frustrated, you attacks are usually reckless and makes you a good target.
He’s going for a frontal attack, Inari, I knew that he was an idiot and that this exam would be easy, but this is ridiculous. I give him one of my famous foxy grins before disappearing from his sight right before he could stab me with his kunai.
“You know, you shouldn’t let your enemies behind your back.”
“Who are you? Your skills are not the ones of a simple Genin.”
“Technically speaking I’m a Genins, but that is because I wasn’t a member of any village until some time ago. But my skills can rival the ones of any ANBU of this village.”
“Really?” He says trying to turn around to stab me.
“Fool…” I say hitting him on his neck with the blunt side of my sword, knocking him out. I use some kunai wire to tie him up and use a Sleep Jutsu on him. After that I take his tag and store it into my weapon pouch.
“Is it over Kaji-senpai?”
“It is Moegi. He won’t be waking up before the end of this exam.”
“Why you didn’t kill him boss?”
“I really don’t want to kill no one unless it is completely necessary Konohamaru. And I hope you don’t either, the feeling left behind after you take someone’s life is really disgusting. Don’t taint your hands with blood unnecessarily.”
“Alright boss.”
“Now let me take a look to those wounds.”
I start to tend to all the wounds the three kids have with all the medical supplies I brought with me, along with my knowledge of medical ninjutsu that Tsunade taught me. After patching them up I help them pick all the weapons that are lying around the battle field.
“Thanks boss!!”
“Don’t worry, now before you go, let me give you some advice. Stay away from the guys from the Thunder Village, it looks like they decided to get rid of all the competence they can. Track your target, get the tags and make a beeline to the Tower, got it?”
“Hai!!”
“Udon, remember this, the tower is at two hour travel from here, in exactly that way, Northeast. Don’t forget it. There will be most likely many traps and ambush in the area near the Tower, so watch out for those and don’t stop no matter what.”
“Ok, you are going to the Tower now Kaji-senpai?”
“No, I’m going to stay around here for a little longer, I got some bubbles to pop.”
“Nani?”
I just smile at them and take off. Now that I have the tag, I will find some nice spot near the river to take a nap and wait for Sasuke’s brats to come get me. I think that it will be a while before they can manage to track me down after all.
[Kiba’s POV. Forest of Death Tower.]
Booooooooring… the exam just begun and it will be a loooooong while until any of the Genins make it here. The record is Gaara’s, I think he made it in five hours? I really don’t remember, but he scared the shit out of me when he crushed that dude with his sand like he was a cookie or something. I’m so very glad that he left behind that psychotic tendencies after he met Naruto. Speaking of him, I wonder how is he doing…
“Inuzuka-sama!! Come quickly to the meeting room, you have to see this!”
“Hai, hai. But how many times I have to say you guys to call me Kiba, Inuzuka-sama is my father, geez…”
I follow the alarmed Chuunin to the meeting room, where Shikamaru is lazing around in a couch watching the surveillance system of the Forest along with Choji who is munching on a bag of potato chips.
“What’s up? Where is the fire?”
“Just take a look.”
I look at the TV, the only thing it shows is Kaji sleeping on a high tree branch next to the river.
“It is Kaji sleeping, what’s so great about that?”
“He already got the tag, and his opponent was that murderer guy from Iwa that gave us so much troubles the past years.”
“WHAT? BUT IT HAS ONLY BEEN AN HOUR AN A HALF SINCE THE EXAM STARTED!!”
“Exactly.” Said Choji lifting his face from the bag of food.
“Show-off…” I mutter.
“I wonder why he doesn’t come to the Tower since he already got the tag.”
“Knowing him, he’s waiting for his enemy to come get him. Tch, he’s too troublesome.”
“I second that Shikamaru.”
“Show-off.” I mumble before leaving the meeting room.
[Naruto’s POV]
I slowly come back to full awareness after my short nap. Even when I’m asleep, Kyuubi keeps an eye open for possible threats nearby, after all, non of us want to get killed while we’re sleeping now, do we? Even if it will be a nice way to pass away, it is pathetic for a shinobi as well.
One of the advantages of setting a camp near a river at the Forest of Death, is that I can see the sky and determine the hour with the help of the sun position. It also gives me a good view of my surroundings because of the clearing it is in, so no hiding or sneak attacks from my opponents.
Which are getting closer and closer to my location right now. It seems that the cocky brats finally found me, after… two hours I started to take a nap and sent Bunshins to leave trails to lead them here. If I was any more obvious I would had to leave them a map. I expected them so much sooner than that.
Oh well, I better get ready to receive them. I jump down of my comfortable tree branch and go settle myself near the river bank, with my sword unsheathed over my lap. I will not hurt them… more than the necessary that’s it.
“Kaji-senpai!!”
“Ohh, hello there boys, what brings you here?”
“Well, we were looking for the guy with the tag number 4, because Mako here has to get it.”
“Really? And why are you looking for Mako’s one first?”
“We decided to search for the tags from the lowest to the highest. I have number 15, and Sako number 20.”
“Do you have any idea of who’s the one that has the tag I need to get Kaji-senpai? I’m hungry and I want to get this over with so I can eat!!!”
“Actually I do Mako.”
“Really! Really! Tell me pleeeease! Pretty please with cherry on top?”
I sweat drop at that. This childish kid is supposed to be an Oto nin? Orochimaru must be in desperate need of subordinates if he lets people like Mako become ninjas of Otokagure. I bet that Kabuto is slapping his forehead somewhere nearby.
“Number four right?”
“Hai!!”
“Like this one?” I say taking out my tag with the number four engraved on it from my weapon pouch.
“You are number four Kaji-senpai!?”
“That’s bad, because I need it! And that means I have to take it from Kaji-senpai and he will fail the exam!! I wanted Kaji-senpai to pass with the rest of us!!”
“Kaji-senpai, we don’t want to fight you. If we do you will get seriously hurt, because it will be three against one, so please just hand over the tag.”
“You really think that I will just obediently hand over the tag without a fight? I’m afraid that it won’t be that simple.” I say standing up with my katana in hand, making sure that the blunt side is on the front, I want to give them a lesson, not kill them after all.
“Is that your final decision, Kaji-senpai?”
“I’m afraid it is.”
“I’m sorry it had to come to this. We won’t go easy on you for being our senpai, we intend to pass this exam no matter what.”
“Then come and try to get it.” I say putting the tag back to where it was and assuming a defensive position.
The first one to attack is Sako, not a surprise there, he tends to jump head first into things, he doesn’t have the patience required for capable Chuunins. I deflect all the shurikens he throws at me with quick movements of my sword.
“I’m afraid that frontal attacks with long range weapons won’t work in my case.”
“Then we will have to attack closer, huh?” Sora comes from the back and try to stab me with his senbon needles. I dodge and knock it out of his hand with the sheath of the sword.
“Good, but for close range attacks you have to be faster than that. Also, senbon needles are better as long range weapons, since they are thinner and smaller they are more difficult to defect.”
“When weapons doesn’t work, taijutsu can be another option against your enemy!” Mako is at my side, trying to land a high kick to my face. I grab his foot and send him flying to one of the trees.
“True, but taijutsu doesn’t work when your opponent is faster than you, no matter how strong you are, if you can’t land a hit, then it is useless. You also have to take in consideration the high of your opponent, if he’s taller than you and you want to land an hit on his head, you will have to jump or you won’t reach.”
“If nothing works, there is always ninjutsu.” Sako says while starting to perform the hand signs.
“That is the correct answer, but be careful, not all your jutsus will do an actual damage.”
After that point, they stock to Jutsu based attacks, and I found myself dodging and countering earth, fire and water based jutsus from the three boys. Now they are taking this seriously, they can pull some interesting strategies, now they are really fighting like Chuunins, sadly, that isn’t enough to beat me. Funny thing is that they are from Oto but they don’t have any sound based attacks.
After a good two hours of fighting, I have the three of them lying on the ground panting, bruised and suffering from chakra exhaustation. They did well and this fight will only leave them with relatively minor injuries, that I won’t heal because it is part of the lesson I wanted to give them.
“How could he beat the three of us in a fight where we went all out?” Sora asked between pants.
“Look at him!! He barely broke a sweat! And look at us!” Mako wondered, he’s state not better than Sora’s.
“And he doesn’t have a scratch on him. Nor our weapons or our taijutsu or our jutsus for that matter, harmed him. How is that possible?”
“Listen up you three, while we were fighting I gave you some lessons, but this one is one of the most important ones. Never, and I mean never, think that you are the strongest ones. If you don’t have all the information about something, do not be overconfident on your abilities, and even if you do, be careful anyway. Because no matter how strong you get, how many people you beat, how fast you climb ranks or how high you get, there will be always, I repeat ALWAYS someone stronger than you and you can only hope that that someone isn’t your enemy. Take each and every fight seriously since the beginning and go all out, don’t hold back because you think it will be easy. Got it?”
“Hai senpai…”
“Good. I will leave now, good luck with your exam.”
Now that I did what I had to, it is time to go to the Tower so I can go get a bath and relax. Teaching the kids a thing or two can prove exhausting. I take the tree tops, taking the fastest way to the tower. I avoid all the traps that the other Genins set around the Tower and leap over the heads of many and take off before they can react.
Inside the tower, I show the Chuunin on a desk inside it the two tags I recollected and signed up an assistance paper. It seems that I was the first one to arrive. Oh well… there is nothing I can do about it anyway now, can I?.
“You big show-off! You not only finished the exam quicker than anyone in history, but you had the nerve to take a nap and wait for the guy who had to catch you come get you!”
“Don’t be so loud Kiba. So, how long it took me to get here?”
“Five hours forty seven minutes. Now you’re second best time behind the tanuki’s team.”
“Yeah, Gaara made it in only five hours if I remember correctly… But I’m not sure, it was years ago.”
“Don’t let Neji hear you call Gaara a raccoon, you know how he gets when you do it.” Choji’s voice come from somewhere behind Kiba.
“You know how troublesome it is. And you are troublesome as well, congratulations Kaji.”
“So when is the next part of the exam?”
“It is like the one back then, a tournament two months from now. So I suggest you to go home and rest until then.”
“I still can’t see the point in you taking this stupid exam man, come one we all know that you are way over the level of a Genin, why the Hokage just ascent you and save you and all of us the trouble?”
“Because, it will be too troublesome to explain why a ninja that came virtually out of nowhere, not only skipped the Academy to become a Genin and doesn’t have a team, but also gets promoted to ANBU, like he should be, without taking any kind of test.”
“Yeah, right. Never really saw it that way.”
“I will be surprised if you did.”
“Hmmm… I think I will be taking my leave now.” I say, running away before the fight that will surely start explodes.
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT LAZY-ASS!!”
‘Just predictable…’ I think with a smile while I run to get the hell out of this Forest.

True Self, New Self.

Yawn... it is late already, so I better take a nap or I won't be able to get up for work. I hope you liked this chapter!!
