A new mission? Yosh!
They were lead inside quickly. However, instead of an examination room of some kind, they were summoned to Tsunade's main office, itself. Kakashi didn't worry, after all, there was no way Tsunade was sending Gai on a mission, and Kakashi was only with him as an escort, he himself wasn't summoned. She most likely just had to fit his check-up in between meetings and did not have time to take him to a proper place for it.
Knocking at the door Gai waited for a moment until the Hokage's calm voice bade the two of them to enter. Stepping into the office he bowed to Tsunade ignoring the pulling sensation in his back in exchange for properly greeting his old sensei. "You wanted to see me Tsunade-sama ?" He asked with a small hint of trepidation. She was bound to be unhappy with him about what had happened on the last mission.
Surprisingly, Gai was met with a wide, beaming smile. "Gai-kun, come on up. How are you feeling?"
That was it. It was clear. She wanted something from him.
Cautiously making his way to her desk Gai was trying to figure out what Tsunade could want from him. The only reason they had even let him out of the hospital had been his penchant for driving the nurses and medics crazy if he had to stay longer than a day. "I'm feeling fine Tsunade-sama.." He answered, knowing he was digging his own grave but unable to answer any other way.
There was a slight twitch at the corner of Tsunade's face, as she clearly was making every attempt to not reprimand him for his reckless behaviour.
"Walking on your own, I see? Well, good, good... If you are feeling up to it, I have a mission for you, Gai. I believe you would be most ideally suited to this one. Ah, it will be as a Jounin, not an ANBU. It will require minimum physical work, mostly supervision, so you should be able to perform it despite your current... state."
"Of course Hokage-sama. If you require me to perform this mission, I will do my best!" Not quite the nice guy promise but more suited to dealings with ones superiors Gai saluted. If this got him out of having Tsunade rant at him about taking better care of himself he would accept any mission even if he did feel like he’d been run over by the Kyuubi.
Tsunade seemed utterly delighted by this, bad mood vanishing instantly. She stood from behind her desk, glancing down for the right scroll.
"Very good. The daimyo’s second and most favourite son has, apparently, got it into his head to receive training in physical adeptness and the art of combat. The boy has never had to suffer a day of work in his life and keeps running through the trainers his father provides for him, all only in the last few months this has developed. Finally, his father contacted me to know if I could find a... personal tutor, shall we say, for his son." Tsunade smiled brilliantly again at Gai.
"This is where you come in. Because you are injured, he will be permitted to enter Konoha itself. He will have to live with you, but he has had a very thorough background check and, ah, needless to say you would have no difficulty snapping him like a twig even in your current condition." She held out a scroll to Gai. "Your pay will be as if you are on an A-Rank mission, daily, for the next two weeks. You will of course get a little extra as well as you will have an extra mouth to feed for those two weeks."
Gai looked less than thrilled at the prospect of having a house guest but figured that would not be a good reason to turn down the mission and break the promise he had already given Tsunade. One thing made him stop for a moment though. "A-rank?" he wondered aloud. "Why is this classed as an A-rank mission?" It sounded like a C or at the most B class to him.
"Although inside Konoha you are not expected to run into any trouble, he is the favoured son of the daimyo, however unlikely it is that he will be the future one. And... originally I was going to turn down the mission, my ninja are needed for more important things than teaching spoiled rich brats. Buuut... the daimyo persuaded me with his plaintive pleas to help his son, um, attain his dreams..."
"So, how much did he offer?" Kakashi asked in an off-handed fashion. Tsunade's eyes practically lit up at that question.
"...It was obscene." she said, breathlessly. "...Really, Gai, I'm ripping you off as far as pay goes for this mission with how much he gave me."
Gai tried his best to keep his disparaging about the Hokage's morals hidden but a low groan couldn't be fully denied. " So it's for the next two weeks?" He asked just to make sure she wouldn't force him to play baby sitter for longer than that.
"Yes, just for the next two weeks." Tsunade said, cheerfully. "...depending on if the daimyo continues to throw money at us like that - really, Gai, it's for Konoha, we could almost rebuild a quarter of the city with this." of course, some would go to more Sake, no doubt, but at least a quarter of the city didn't need to be rebuilt from scratch.
"He will be arriving at your place with two escorts at sunset. Tomorrow will be the start of the two week period." Tsunade tossed him a money pouch that was significantly fuller than most he got for many other missions. "Your budget for the two weeks. Get anything extra you might need tonight, you have roughly twelve hours until sunset."
Catching the purse Gai stowed it away in an almost empty kunai holster and nodded. "If that is all Tsunade-sama?" Hopefully by the end of the two weeks he would be able to return to his normal duties as Jounin sensei and ANBU.
Tsunade nodded. "That is all."
Bowing again Gai quickly left the office, his legs carrying him out into the busy streets of Konoha. Looking back at Kakashi he shrugged helplessly with his shoulders. " That was not quite what I was expecting." he admitted grudgingly. Scanning the rows of shops he seemed almost lost but quickly gathered himself. " I guess I'll have to go and buy what I need now..."
Kakashi looked at Gai's current state. He wasn't really going to be able to lift things...
"I'll do it." he said. "You go home and make sure your house is in order, I'll pick up anything you don't have. Two birds with one stone and all that."
Looking for a moment like he wanted to protest Kakashi sacrificing his free day to help Gai out with his mission preparations Gai quickly rethought it when his chest gave him a warning twinge. "Very well my rival. I shall make a list of what will be needed then." Pulling out his little notebook formed like a turtle Gai quickly wrote down the essentials he would be expected to provide as well as a list of foodstuff that were easy enough to prepare that even he had a good chance of surviving the attempt. Adding a short note to the bottom of the list using the code they had agreed upon for their missions. Smiling he folded the paper in half and handed it over to Kakashi. "I'll see you later then." With a wave he was swallowed up by the mass of people crowding the streets and headed back to his flat.
Kakashi watched Gai for a while before he moved on, concerned about Gai's safety and well-being on the way home. but they were deep within Konoha, and surely he would be okay... Kakashi retrieved the items from Gai's list quickly and efficiently, returning to Gai's flat with still another two hours to spare.
Knocking at the door Gai waited for a moment until the Hokage's calm voice bade the two of them to enter.
