Chapter 3: Traitorous thoughts, traitorous thoughts...

The day was beautiful. The birds were chirping in a comforting cliche of a perfect morning. The large trees of Konoha seemed to be orchestrated in a hypnotizing dance, bent with the purpose of forming the entrancing vision of a shimmering emerald sheet dotted with sparkling winks of sunlight afforded by the dewdrops on forest-green leaves. Earthy fumes appeared to smoothly rise from the ground in teasing wisps as they enticed the villagers to take in their primitive scent. It had rained this morning and nature's subtle hints were usually not lost on Sakura who adored the fresh spring-like atmosphere that followed. But today was different. Sakura's steps were slow and steady, never betraying the mass of turmoil and chaotic thoughts that were raging in her mind. She couldn't stop thinking about last night's dream and the even more stomach-turning prospect of seeing her dream lover in the flesh. Face to face. She would hear his voice. See him. She blushed hotly as another image of his beautiful face hovering over her, their limbs entwined in naked splendour, came unbidden into her traitorous mind. It was as if her mind did not want to forget. Scenes from her dream had continually drifted into her conscious mind in all it's vivid technicolour and surround sound. Too frequently for Sakura's liking! Only the barest hint of a dewdrop falling on the tip of her nose alerted her to the fact that it had rained that morning. And even then, a naughty whisper suggested that perhaps nature had let the cool rain fall to recover from the scorching heat generated by last night's activities. It occurred all too frequently for Sakura to count but perhaps for the one millionth and seventy-seventh time that morning, Sakura blushed hotly.

He could hear her soft footsteps at the foot of the bridge before he saw her come. As he turned to observe her, he noted her beautiful, flushed face, her lustrous pastel hair blowing lightly in the breeze appearing to mirror her rosy face. Her hips swayed gracefully with every movement forward and it was all he could do to smirk as he remembered their...flexibility. Sasuke had decided that he would wait for Sakura to talk to him as usual, ask him out, and then surprise her by accepting. By finally accepting. She would be shocked, of course. Surprised. But he knew that she wouldn't be able to stop beaming after that. He smirked. It was so easy to please her. One word was all it took. In fact, one nod was more than enough. And he would be spared the embarrassment of having to initiate the gesture. He could admit to himself, however, that there was a little thrill of excitement and anticipation pumping through his veins as he contemplated this new cascade of events that were to take place in his life. He had never really thought about openly acknowledging any sort of relationship exterior to the friendship boundary with any female before. But he supposed that if it would be anybody, he had always known deep inside that it would be Sakura.

He waited. Soon she would lean over the bridge as usual as they shared the precious quiet moments before that loud Naruto and the eternally late Kakashi appeared. It had never changed. She would blush, look away and begin her execution of claiming some 'romantic time' between them. It was inevitable. He waited. She took her cue, leaning against the red railing, an audible whisper of a sigh escaping her soft lips. Why had he never noticed how soft they looked before? He waited. Precious minutes passed. But the same chain of events that had unfailingly took place each morning for six long years never came. It should have happened about six seconds ago. Her mouth would slowly open to form the words that earned a blush from her cheeks and girlish giggles from her self. He blinked. Then frowned. Maybe because he had upset the long ingrained team dynamics by intending to accept!? This was absurd. Sasuke couldn't believe the absurd train of thoughts chugging through his mind and the absurd train of events chugging through reality. He looked at Sakura directly, a slight frown on his face. She had slumped down to the ground, leaning on the old red post, her lips parted and eyes taking on a beautiful green glaze. She didn't even seem to notice his presence! Should he be feeling worried? Sasuke opened his mouth to try and talk to her, "Saku-" but was interrupted by the blaringly loud voice belonging to none other than Naruto.

"Good morning Sakura-chan!Good morning Sasuke!" Sasuke frowned at the interruption. Well, he had no choice but to wait for the mission to end. That was when Sakura usually tried to ask him out again. If she asked. 'What's wrong Sakura-chan? Is something wrong??, " Naruto exclaimed in exaggerated worry as he took in her preoocupied expression. Sakura seemed to snap out of her daze at the intrusion of the ninja's voice, her face blushing scarlet. It wasn't because she was caught daydreaming but of course, the nature of her daydream. What was wrong with her? She sighed. She had no self control. "It's nothing, Naruto," she said, smiling at the obviously relieved guy. She could depend on him to distract her from her perverse thoughts, relaxing as he launched into an animated discussion of his beloved Hinata's ramen as opposed to his beloved Ichiraku's. She smiled. He hadn't changed. Sasuke too was as broody as ever, she thought as she startlingly realized that she had not noticed him there, deep as she was in her thoughts! He hadn't changed but she obviously had. It was just that the feelings she had felt in the dream were so strong and different from the girlish affections she had always felt for Sasuke. Strong enough to displace those same feelings. Infatuation? Perhaps that was all it was...

*Poof!* It was a long time later as the three of them heard the announcement of Kakashi's appearance. "Good morning everyone," he said easily over the din that was Naruto's usual protests of his being late, holding a small scroll in his right hand. It was another tradition of theirs to have him retreive the mission, solidifying his unshakable superior status in their eyes. His senses were too distracted by thoughts of Sakura that it didn't register, how she had failed to chide him alongside Naruto. He shook his head slightly, trying to clear his thoughts. He started again, "Today's mission is a simple one. All we have to do is recover a scroll from Akagahara. Looks like the one i'm holding and it was left over from the last Chuunin exam." He smiled at the three. They had grown up a lot since their genin years. Especially Sakura...She had always been the mature one of the three. She had grown to be a beautiful young woman. Why had he never noticed how much she had grown before? He supposed he had never really thought of her as anything but his ex-student. One he had many affections for. But the dream last night forced him to see that yes, she was definitely a woman and perhaps one of those affections he felt for her had grown into something less innocent. Something less befitting a teacher and student. Those thoughts that he had tried so hard to repress were rushing through his head again at the sight of her. She appeared to be blushing and his eyes widened for a brief second. Had she caught him staring?! He looked away from her at the other two but the dream was still planted firmly in his mind, playing it's intimate details over and over, peppered with whispers of suggest of of a rather dirty nature. His traitorous mind. It was hot under his mask... He cleared his throat rather audibly. "I guess we can start the mission now."

A few feet away from the uncomfortable Kakashi was a blushing and rather uncomfortable Sakura. It was strange to be near him. Hearing his voice. Like silky velvet whispers over gravel. His hard body under that uniform. She flushed on cue. 'You don't even know how he looks like underneath it all!,' she berated herself. Still, her memory of his rippling muscles flashed through her mind. Maybe he looks even better, came the naughty whisper again. He seemed uncomfortable, she thought. Maybe she had been caught staring!?? She looked down sharply, willing all these thoughts to disappear...But he was so near and much, much too beautiful to ignore. She gave in.
