Chapter Two: Déjà vu

Cloudy was an understatement. The sky was dotted with poor excuses for clouds at every turn of the head, resembling a two year old's drawing with charcoal. On any other day, Shikamaru would have just shrugged it off, deeming that somewhere else someone else was having a miserable day. Normally that would work, but since right now he was strolling off to the Hokage office hidden behind his bear ANBU mask, he knew that somewhere was here and someone was himself. It was one thing to get ANBU orders from the mission room, but getting them from Tsunade was something completely different. It meant the highest sign of security and danger. Fun for someone like Kiba, but torture for the man who still wished to settle down with a family and quit the shinobi business some day. His shoulders sagged under the increasingly sour outlook for the day and the thickening humidity. Cloudy and humid. Rain was going to pour today.

He was usually the last one to meander in when they were called to the office so he could try and avoid as much of the next inevitable fight between Tsunade and Naruto as possible. The two expressed their weird mother/son relationship by going for one another’s throats at any and every opportunity. He got enough yelling at home from his mom and was not eager to expose himself to anymore unnecessary abuse. So he was shocked when he walked in to only find one stiff figure standing there, watching over Tsunade who was attempting to do some more paper work. Walking to the dog masked man's side, Shikamaru leaned over, whispering, “Did she kick him out again? I didn't see any medics on my way in and the guards to her office appeared calm.”

The other man shrugged, as the white dog on his head yipped a few high pitched barks. “Yeah, what Akamaru said.”

Shikamaru sighed, rolling his eyes. “I can't understand the dog, you idiot.”

Certainly Kiba frowned behind the mask--any comment that attacked him personally did that--but it was impossible to actualy see his movement behind the mask. “We don't know why Naruto isn’t here. I got here a few minutes ago, and she told me we would be starting once you came. I asked about Naruto, but she said she would explain later. I can't imagine her putting us two on the same mission and not include Naruto. It has always been all three of us or solitary missions.”

”Maybe this has something to do with Neji.” Shikamaru wanted to add that maybe the Hyuuga prodigy was going to replace their blond teammate but decided that guess would be better left unspoken. There was no need to work up Kiba without knowing the truth behind a statement like that.

Kiba tilted his head contemplatively, silently smirking behind his mask. However, before he was able to reply, Tsunade cleared her throat, drawing both of them to attention. “I know you two, as well as Naruto, have been working together for a few years now on and off as one a group, but today I would like to alter those dynamics a bit.” The door behind them opened allowing the entrance of another ANBU officer. Neither of the two standing in front of the Hokage desk moved, they could easily guess who it was. The hawk masked man took a spot next to the dog, eying the other masks carefully. Shikamaru stole a brief glance side ways, mystified by the looming figure. Neji hadn't been short when he was young, but nothing then gave any hints to the towering, nearly six foot man next to him. His hair was still long and glossy, held back discreetly with the small hair tie just a few inches from the end.

“I have a particularly difficult mission for you three, one that will take a considerable amount of time. Nearly seven years I gave you this same mission and now I ask it of you again: bring back Uchiha Sasuke." A sharp intake of breath came from Kiba, but the other two stayed stoic. “There has been a recent confirmation that he is no longer a part of Orochimaru's organization. It is uncertain if he is hiding out or working for another group, but he's a missing nin and, since he's an increasingly dangerous one, one that we must capture quickly."

”How's that?” Kiba mumbled, exchanging a few glances with the dog peering over the edge of his head. A soft almost pitiful whine was emitted from Akamaru.

”In the past seven years he must have improved. When he was here, he bordered chuunin status. By now, he will likely have the skills and power of a jounin. Also while he was under Orochimaru's control there was no doubt certain limitations placed upon him to prevent any undesirable damage being done to Sound. But now, completely on his own, he answers to nobody and acts on his own whims. There have been no reports of deaths attributed to him, but that doesn't mean that his hands are clean nor that they will stay that way.” She sighed softly, looking down to her desk. “I ask you three because of all the shinobi we have, you know him the best. He has changed in the past seven years, no doubt about it, but if anybody is going to persuade him to do anything, it will be you three.”

”What about Naruto?” Shikamaru asked, knowing deep inside his mind the answer already.

”He can not know about this. Recent years have made him understandably bitter towards Sasuke, bordering on obsessive. He is currently on a mission with Jiraiya and will not be back until four days from now. You three will be far enough that he can't follow, even if he wants to. Still, there are few people who know about this mission and all know not to mention it to Naruto. His addiction to the man will only jeopardize the mission and any men with him. As two of you know, there was an incident last year that could have easily ended all lives involved and it started with just a simple informant's mention of a possible location for Uchiha Sasuke.” She stood up slowly, leaning her weight onto the desk. “I have three folders here with all available information on him. You will be leaving tonight for Lightening Country. Any questions?”

”Has Uchiha Itachi been killed? Going after his brother will likely be his next step.” Shikamaru asked, his mind whirling with the possible paths of the self proclaimed avenger.

”No, as far as we know Itachi has not been killed. There hasn't been any news about him either, since his impromptu attack a few years ago.” She paused, eying all of them.

Neji spoke next. His voice, not heard by the other two for some time, was still controlled and smooth, but had deepened in tone over the past few years. “You make it sound like this is our mission until we catch him. Is this correct?"

”Ultimately I would like for this to all be resolved in a month. However this is highly unlikely. With our recent difficulties with Lightening Country, we must be aware of any possible retailation against us. The Uchiha, in their hands, would be a powerful weapon. I give the time limit of a month. After that, with or without him, you three must return back here.”

”The three of us will be able to retrieve him in a month’s time.” Neji replied back confidently, his eyes scanning over the bunch.

”I know this will be difficult, but possible. Shikamaru, you're the team leader.”

Nodding, he said flatly, ”We will leave tonight.” His mind already was filing through the supplies needed.

”Thank you, you three may go.” With a nod, they were dismissed. They filed out slowly with Kiba already goading Shikamaru into taking a trip to the bar.

”Honesty, it is not even dinner time.” Shikamaru rolled his eyes.

”Why put off till later what can be done now?” Kiba laughed, bouncing on the balls of his feet.

”Go home.” Neji said coolly, his eyes locked on the dog mask, threatening him silently to disobey both men.

”Hai, listen to him, Dog. Go home and get ready. We will meet by the North Gate at 6 o clock.” Shikamaru echoed Neji's threat that there was no room for argument and instead turned and walked away. Kiba grumbled a few choice words, but took off toward home.

That left Neji by himself, to reflect over this change of events. Neji didn't have their enthusiasm for the hunt or the eagerness to plan out another mission, so even thought he didn't grumble about having to do it, he still wasn't pleased with it. If the first attempt at retrieving Sasuke had ended with five ninja nearly losing their lives, it was doubtful that this attempt would go any more smoothly. He wasn't even certain if it was better that Naruto was being removed from coming with them. The blond had an infectious optimism, enabling each of them to push on when their muscles screamed for a moment's rest and the outlook was at its bleakest. But on the other hand there were rumors that dark thoughts of Sasuke were slowly enveloping a blanket over Naruto's mind, constantly reminding him that he had failed when Sasuke needed him the most. While Neji didn't know all the details, he had heard the basic gist of the incident Tsunade had brought up. During a mission in Sand Country, a comment from an informant sent Naruto into a blinding fury and determination, leading him directly into a trap. Luckily, both Shikamaru and Kiba had been with Naruto, and hung back from running head long into Sasuke's supposed dwelling. The hiss of the exploding tags caught Kiba's attention first, springing him into action. He was able to carry Naruto out with just a few seconds to spare before the entire house blew apart into a thousand pieces. After that Naruto had promised them to ignore anything dealing with Sasuke unless directly related to their mission, but they could both hear the lie in the statement. So much had weighted on the troubled relationship between the two former friends that it would be impossible to just dismiss any thoughts of his fallen teammate with a simple phrase like 'I will forget about Sasuke, I promise'. Not only had Sasuke hurt Naruto, but wounded the few that first accepted him, the ones closest to his heart. He had betrayed Naruto's family, so to speak.

In an odd twist, Neji sympathized these irrational feelings about getting back at Sasuke. Even though things with the Main House had gotten better over the past few years as he matured and his uncle became to view him more as a peer than an annoying reminder of his dead twin brother, there was still an undeniable riff between the two Houses. But he would, without hesitation, give up his life to protect any one of them, knowing no matter how dysfunctional they were, it was his duty to defend them. Understanding this, and being good friends with Naruto, meant that the blond's battles were his too, and he welcomed the chance to remove some of the weight on Naruto's shoulders.

Kiba and Shikamaru on the other hand... Neji sighed and shook his head, unsure how this mission would play out. His first one as an ANBU and it required him running around with a man of questionable sanity and another too smart for his own good in what would be a wet and murky place. Sure, he welcomed helping Naruto out, but it didn't mean he was going to enjoy it. He wasn't sure whether it was Hyuuga pessimism or just overall doubt but he couldn't imagine this going easy. He just hoped nobody died.
