Chapter II: Farewells and Second Encounters

Sasuke was yet again awoken by pain in his cheek. He was starting to get the suspicion that slapping him was Kabuto’s favorite pastime. “What the…”

“Just get up.” Kabuto said impatiently. Impatience, that was funny, Kabuto was never the one to get impatient. Well, no time to reflect on the bespectacled man. He sat up straight in his bed, waiting for a moment before he could properly see the man next to his bed, tapping his foot.

“It’s the middle of the night Kabuto…” He growled, wanting to sleep all of this off. Not that one could tell in a place with no windows…It probably really was the middle of the night, considering he went to sleep around dusk, and he had never been quite the deep sleeper—so he’d count the hours by until sunrise.

“I’m getting you out of here. Hurry up and get dressed before he notices anything.” He replied, feeling a bit more at ease now that the Uchiha was awake.

Sasuke nodded as Kabuto turned to give him privacy, smirking as he pulled his shirt over his head. Kabuto never referred to Orochimaru as ‘he’ or ‘him’ before. Was something going on? Or was Kabuto just being overly superstitious, thinking the snake man to sneeze even in his sleep at his name being mentioned. Whichever it was, it didn’t really matter, they still had to be cautious with…say, what where they doing anyway?

Sasuke slipped his sandals on, rubbing his somewhat throbbing neck, and turned to the shadow of Kabuto in the darkness, “Where are we going?” He asked, being sure to say it lowly, sensing that this was to keep from their Master’s ears.

“I’m taking you from here; you’re of no use to me anymore.”

Sasuke tried not to laugh at the comment, he sounded like the gentle hunter from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. But this was very helpful, indeed. Originally, he had planned to leave alone in two days, when Orochimaru was distracted with playing with Kabuto or something of that nature. But this was a better offer. Almost too good to be true…almost. Sasuke barely remembered sometimes that Kabuto worked for both Akatsuki and Orochimaru. He might even work for another—but that was just pure speculation.

They walked as silently as possible through the stone hallways, but every step seemed to reverberate loudly against the wall to Sasuke, and his heartbeat thundered in his ears. They were extra careful by Orochimaru’s door since it was slightly ajar, soft candle light spilling from it.
But Orochimaru seemed to hear everything. “Issss that you, Kabuto-kun?” Kabuto stopped in his tracks, giving Sasuke a calm, reassuring glance before peeking through his door. “Yes Orochimaru-sama.”

“Where are you going so late at night?” His voice, to Sasuke seemed hopeful.

“The laboratory, my lord, but I shall come back in a half an hour.” Kabuto soothed, pushing Sasuke ahead to continue down the hallway. Orochimaru’s face showed he had noted the black flash past his door, but Kabuto cleverly passed it off as his other arm came into view to smile gently and run his hand through his hair.

“Alright then.”

Kabuto hurried off, catching up with Sasuke at the entrance to the snake’s lair. He looked up from resting his head on his chest, and gave him a questioning glance.
He didn’t stop to answer the real question, “Not here, let’s go.”

They had traveled an hour before dawn came, but it was short-lived beauty when the clouds from the east rolled in. The sky had opened up on the two weary travelers, pouring downs sheets of rain. The trees proved little comfort, so Kabuto decided to stop and find shelter. He stopped and turned around, “Eh, Sasuke, we need to—Sasuke?” He looked at the younger man.

Sasuke wasn’t feeling good at all to begin with, and now he felt even worse in the cold, autumn rain that flew into his eyes and made his nose drip. But his body was far from cold, in fact, it was burning. And he had a ridiculous amount of pain in his neck. He didn’t tell Kabuto only because the pain in his neck came from where the curse seal was…

Kabuto stared at him for a moment before blinking and then, remaining calm he asked, “Are you alright? I was going to ask whether you wanted to go on ahead, or find shelter. But I guess since you’re looking sort of bad, we’ll continue.”

Sasuke frowned deeper. What was he…Yes, that was just how Kabuto was. He never waited for an answer from someone lower than he. Why? Because he liked to make his own decisions and pretend you were part of it. As to not make you feel so out of the loop.

He rubbed his neck again, trying to will the pain away, because it was close to getting unbearable. Not that he was complaining. He never complained. Well, not most of the time, anyways. “I don’t even know where we’re going. How am I supposed to make that decision?” He grumbled, inaudible over the rain pouring down through the leaves of the trees.

Thankfully, or maybe unfortunately, Kabuto had impeccable hearing, “Exactly.” He said. He had been known to be cynical at times…

Soon, they were reaching the gates of Konoha—but for Sasuke, it had been too long to remember the way. Both men had gone silent, both self-indulgent in their own troubles.

Sasuke was thinking of Itachi again. He couldn’t stop since the minute he had killed him. He still couldn’t imagine a world without his crazed elder brother. But here he was, living in it. However, the more he thought of him, the more his neck hurt, and the more the rest of his body became flushed and hot with his rising fever.

Kabuto stopped again. And Sasuke clenched his jaw, turning to him, “What now?!”

“Look.” He stated simply.

He watched Sasuke turn around and see what was in front of him. It hit him visibly like a ton of trees. He wanted to look away from this private moment of hurt, but couldn’t bring himself to.

Sasuke couldn’t believe where Kabuto had taken him. He hadn’t been here in so long… he steeled his shoulders against shaking and turned to glare at Kabuto, “Why are we here?”

“This is the only safe place you can go. But then again, I have an offer before you go inside.”

Sasuke somehow managed to nod, even with the throbbing pain it brought.

“You can stay in Konoha, rebuild your Clan and let the people forgive you. Or, you can join Akatsuki. At least you know there you’ll be welcomed…” As your brother’s replacement, Kabuto finished in his mind.

Sasuke seemed to read it in words, though. Thank the gods he had been born with a mind, or Kabuto would be hurting his feelings every time they spoke. Sasuke squared his shoulders, “No.”

Kabuto held his hands up in defeat. “Then I’ll take my leave.”

Sasuke looked back at him for a moment, the moment before Kabuto, his savoir would disappear into the trees, and him jumping over the gates and walking through those streets again. That much was inevitable, but Sasuke wanted this second to last.
Silence, except for the roar of the rain between them, Sasuke stared at him through dripping wet bangs, droplets of water clinging to his eyelashes.

Kabuto understood. The look said it all. With a nod, he turned away, and jumped out of the clearing in the direction of the snake’s lair. He had wanted to show gratitude, but was unable to say it. He chuckled; Uchiha Sasuke had never been a very vocal person. And his pride would certainly get in the way of a proper thank you.

It was a queue, as soon as Kabuto nodded and bolted off, Sasuke turned and did the same. This was it, certainty had vanished, and everything that lye before him was the blurred, vague line of his future. He wondered when everything in his life had gone wrong. Then again, he wasn’t the self-pitying type, and wasn’t planning on becoming one.

Upon jumping over the gargantuan gates of his old village, he landed himself in a large muddy puddle just over the fortification. Unfortunate as it was, Sasuke walked on towards his old apartment building, memories of time spent here flooding back like the rain. He tried his hardest to keep the memories of his old sensei out the most.

Days they shouldn’t have spent together, glances and touches, sighs. That was what said the most when you were in love—but hurt the most to reminisce about when out of it.

Sasuke tried not to trigger the break in the well-protected dam of those memories, but it just kept tormenting him.

It was an affair that shouldn’t have been, because I was young and naive, Sasuke thought to himself as he walked through the empty and muddy roads. The teen almost laughed if it wasn’t for the pain in his neck…and his heart. It sounded like some teenaged girl’s tragedy out of some paperback novel. It was almost way too cliché. That was, if he had stayed. He sighed, his sensei was…

Footsteps sounded over the rain that still flew down with all the anger of a flood, which poured so steady and so hard, it threatened to drown him and his pain. But wait…he recognized these footsteps. They could belong to no one else.

Turning, or more so, whipping about, Sasuke glared at the figure in the blurring rain behind him. Even with the blurry image, he still recognized this person. The form stopped abruptly a foot away from him. “What?!”

The figure’s shoulders slumped at the younger man’s tone. “Yo, Sasuke…what’re you doing here…?”

It took all of Sasuke’s remaining willpower not to snort ridiculously. Why was it every time they met like this, he sounded so contrived?

He didn’t want to meet like this. Turning, he started at a run.

*****

So? How was this one? I’m so sorry, I didn’t get to lime-a-nize this chapter. Yeah. I apologize, I know this is what you’re reading for, and since it doesn’t make any sense now…I just wanted to make it clear were everyone stands with each other, where Sasuke stands when dealing with himself…so it’d be kinda clumsy to just stick some lemony scene in the middle, ne? Bear with me, I’m getting to it, and It’ll be really good. Promise. There might be a little more limey hinting in the next chapter to keep you at bay, so stick around!
With Love,
Kaz
