A survivor.
Pity and relief mingled with apprehension as Kakashi cocked his head to one side, considering his options.
Take care of him, Kakashi-kun. Obito's voice whispered in his head.
After a moment he crouched down, squashing down the sadness he felt as the eyes retreated out of sight, their owner pressing further into the small space under the porch. He propped his chin on his hand and addressed the porch, his laconic drawl more serious than usual.
“I know this is probably the hardest thing in the world to believe right now, kid, but we really aren’t going to hurt you.”
There was no response from the still presence, and Kakashi pursed his lips under his mask, looking up at Genma for inspiration.
Genma chewed his toothpick for a few seconds, thinking it over, and then pulled out an apple from his pocket. They’d passed an orchard that morning; the fruit was ripe and fragrant. He took a crunchy bite, and handed it to Kakashi, who took it and held it up so it would be visible through the loose boards.
“Here.” He set the fruit down in front of the porch. “Eat.”
They stood still, watching.
Sasuke stared at the apple.
He was so hungry.
It could be a trick.
It smelled recently picked.
He was supposed to go apple picking tomorrow with It...
Don’t think about it.
The blond ninja had eaten some of the apple.
So it probably wasn’t poisoned.
Probably.
There was medicine in the house.
He couldn’t go in there.
The silver-haired ninja had a mask on.
It covered his nose and mouth.
One of his eyes was covered as well.
The other one was kind though.
It reminded him of Father...
Don’t think about it.
He was so hungry.
