The Ocean and the Desert

Gaara had been drifting in and out of feverish dreams for a day, and every time he awakened he would see Saretha sitting beside him. He would give a weak smile then fall back onto the pillow, once again trapped in heated hallucinations of him and Shukaku, all terrifying. He was often running from the demon or fighting him, never learning whether he beat Shukaku or not for he always woke before the end.

*Another fighting dream drifted into Gaara’s cloudy mind and the boy hurriedly moved to his fighting stance. Shukaku took his position and leapt slamming down to the ground where Gaara had stood seconds before. Swirling sand clashed into Gaara’s body throwing him onto the dry cracked ground with enough force to knock the wind out of his lungs. He struggled to stand and pulled out a kunai and leaped with deadly accuracy slashing through the arm of the demon in front of him.

Shukaku let out a roar of fury and clutched the wound. Unlike the real world, the demon could be hurt (not killed) in the mind he inhabited. Infuriated he leapt with renewed vigor and Gaara was forced to give ground as Shukaku’s blades of sand attacked in furious waves of deadly precision. The ninja raised his kunai to block the strikes and saw his opening when Shukaku misjudged the distance and overreached. Flicking out his arm with the quickness of an adder, Gaara plunged his weapon into the demon’s soft underbelly.

The wounded creature let out a howl of pain and fell back holding his slashed stomach. With a glare Shukaku fled, subdued for now.*

Gaara woke from the fight dream with a gasp, and he looked around shivering. There beside his bed sat Saretha, she was asleep and he saw the stars through the opened door of the house they were in. Temari and Kankurou were also sleeping lightly on some mats in the corner.

The ninja struggled into a sitting position and reached for the small bowl of water sitting on the table beside his cot. Gaara took a sip of the cool soothing liquid and gently shook his pounding head.

Gaara yawned and stretched, moving his feet of the cot and dropping gently to the warm adobe floor. He quietly padded out of the hut and stepped into the cool night air, inhaling deeply causing all the desert smells to fill his sinuses. The strong calming smell of the creosote bush and the anise stood out among the more subtle scents of the wildflowers, the creosote and anise were there year long and always reminded Gaara of the one place he felt at home, the desert. Underlying all the plant and wildlife smells, stood the warm and heady scent of the sand, constant and never leaving but always shifting and moving. The sand was truly one thing that seemed so peaceful but always moved, just like it’s opposite, the ocean.

Waking from his medative state, Gaara turned to see Saretha walking quietly towards him. He stretched out a hand and pulled her close.

“I’m so glad your ok, I thought you were going t-t-to….” the girl in his arms broke into sobs before she could finish her sentence.

Gaara just held her close, whispering comforting words pressing his lips gently to the top of her head. She smelled so good, just like the desert only crisper and fresh. That scent he realized was one of the things he’d just been thinking about, she smelled of the ocean. *So did that mean she was the ocean and he was the desert; that they were opposites and that was their destiny? To be separated and broken?*

“What are you thinking of?” Saretha asked pulling away; smiling though tears still stained her face.

“Nothing,” Gaara smiled down at her, if that was their destiny then he could only enjoy what they had now.

Inside of Gaara’s mind Shukaku woke from his healing sleep, sensing an opening in the still strained mental defenses of his host. With a wicked smile the demon leaped at the weakened portion of the wall and broke free to the world beyond his mortal prison.
