Act I, Scene III: New York's Not My Home
______________________________________

[The curtain opens on a warehouse. It’s empty save for crates filled with products. The sound of a loading dock door opening sounds and echoes across the stage. Sasuke and Lee enter.]

“The shipment still doesn’t leave for another three days, but after that close call with Kabuto, I think it is a safe idea that you stay here.”

“What do I do during the day?”

“My father has an office upstairs in which no one is allowed. And he should not be making an unscheduled appearance before you are smuggled out of here.”

“Now tell me what route this shipment will be taking.”

“The truck will transport the products as far as Kansas, and then they will be packaged onto a freight train that will roll into Los Angeles. If you stay hidden, you will be fine.”

“Lee, I know you don’t like me, but I do appreciate everything you’re doing for me.”

“It is not that I do not like you, Sasuke-san. It is that the light of my life, my flower in this winter-frozen world, is enamored of you, and I am afraid that I can never compete.”

[Sasuke smirks.]

“Maybe if you tell her that I fuck boys it could help you out a little.”

“What? You… you… You do not like girls?”

“I wouldn’t say that, but there’s just something about a man’s di-”

“Please, no more. I do not wish to know the secrets of your love life. Now I must leave you, but here is the key to my father’s office. When you leave, place it under the plant outside the door. Oh, and do watch out for the night janitor. He might be lazy, but one can never tell.”

“Got it.”

[Lee leaves. Sasuke is left to look around his surroundings, and he begins to plot out the best way to get into the truck without being seen. A new character enters stage left as Sasuke’s back is to the audience. It is a man with his mouth, nose, and one eye covered. He is pushing a broom when he sees Sasuke.]

“I doubt there’s anything in those crates a teenaged boy could want.”

[Sasuke spins around to face the masked man. The man is leaning on the broom, his one visible eye crinkled in amusement.]

“I might not look it, but I can take you on if you have the inclination.”

“I’m not looking for a fight, old man. I’m not here to steal anything.”

“Then can I ask what you are doing here?”

[Sasuke looks away, hands clenched at his sides. The man cants his head to the right, his silver hair flopping more over his left eye.]

“If I tell you, will you allow me to continue?”

“Well, that certainly depends on what exactly is going on, though I have no particular reason to tell Gai any of this happened.”

“You know Maito-san?”

“Know him, beat him up as kids, same difference.”

“Anyway, I’m going to use one of his shipments to get out of New York.”

“Running away?”

[Sasuke says nothing.]

“I see you have a bruise on your cheek. Are you being abused?”

“That’s no matter to you!”

“Ah, you have a temper. Maybe you’re in a gang. Maybe you’ve done something to make them mad. But if this is so, and you have to hop a shipment across the country, maybe this is bigger than some street gang.”

“You’ve hit close enough to the truth. Now, will you let me go, or are you going to call the cops?”

“Eh, I don’t see why I should stop you. I couldn’t sleep at night if the Uchiha heir should wind up dead in an alley somewhere.”

[Sasuke tenses. He turns his head for a way out, never taking his eyes off the janitor.]

“How do you know my name?”

“Anybody who’s anybody knows about the Uchiha case. Ah, I’m sorry. I didn’t offend you, did I?”

“Hn.”

“My name is Hatake Kakashi. Now why don’t we sit down and you tell me what’s going on?”

“Why should tell you anything?”

“Because I know how you can get out of here without getting caught, that’s why.”

[Sasuke stares for a moment before letting out a sigh and sitting on a nearby crate.]

“You know who Orochimaru is? Well, I killed him, and now-”

“Holy shit! Okay, no need to go any further. Shit, kid, we have to get you out of here fast.”

“That’s why I’m trying to get to LA.”

“You can’t go alone.”

“And what are you suggesting?”

“I’ll go with you. Kid, you might not want me along, but I can help you.”

“How?”

“You’re not the only one who knows about crime syndicates. In fact, I can even guarantee you a cover when we get there.”

[Sasuke opens his mouth to reply, but then closes it in thought.]

“You think about it while I finish up here.”

[Kakashi continues to sweep, and Sasuke watches warily from the crate.]

“You’re a cop, aren’t you?”

“Hm. I was. But then something happened that I’d rather not talk about, and I moved here.”

“Why do you want to come with me? You don’t know the first thing about me. If you’re with me, you’ll be in danger.”

“I can’t in good conscience let you go alone. Besides… [Kakashi looks up and away wistfully.] This isn’t my home.”

[Music begins as Kakashi walks to a crate across from Sasuke and sits down. He turns to look at some point above the audience.]

Things were spinnin’ ‘round me, and all my thoughts were cloudy. And I had begun to doubt all the things that were me. Been in so many places. You know I’ve run so many races and looked into the empty faces of the people of the night, and something is just not right.

‘Cause I know that I got to get out of here. I’m so alone. Don’t you know that I got to get out of here? ‘Cause New York’s not my home.

[Kakashi turns to look at Sasuke.]

Though all the streets are crowded, there’s something strange about it. I lived there ‘bout a year and I never once felt at home. I thought I’d make the big time. I learned a lot of lessons awful quick, and now I’m telling you that they were not the nice kind. It has been so long since I have felt fine.

That’s the reason that I got to get out of here. I’m so alone. Don’t you know that I got to get out of here? ‘Cause New York’s not my home.

[Kakashi stands to continue sweeping. Sasuke stands with him.]

“Fine. We’ll talk about it tomorrow.”

[Sasuke moves offstage where the audience assumes the stairs are as they hear the sound of feet stomping on metal steps. Kakashi watches until the sound stops, and then he looks down at the floor.]

That’s the reason that I got to get out of here. I’m so alone. Don’t you know that I got to get out of here? ‘Cause New York’s not my home.

[As the music continues and fades out, Kakashi sweeps until he disappears behind some crates.]
