Sakura walked back through the thick woods, toward the clearing where she left Sai loosely containing her rage. ‘What makes them think they have the right to choose who I date!’ She thought furiously. ‘I’m able to take care of myself.’ However, things were finally starting to make sense.
All these years she had thought the male half of the species had ignored her because they found her unattractive. Now she found out Naruto and Sasuke had been scaring them away. She wasn’t sure which reason she preferred because on the one hand it was nice not feeling like she would always be ignored but on the other hand there was really nothing she could do about their sense of over protectiveness.
Naruto had always been like this. It didn’t surprise her that he had pulled a stunt like this. That was just the way he was. Always viewing her as a little 12-year-old girl who could not take care of herself. She was the Hokage’s protégée apprentice damn it! And he very well better recognize that she was a force to be reckoned with. She knew this was all wishful thinking though, because Naruto would always feel the need to defend and protect her.
Sasuke, however, had never shown any inclination to protect her outside of missions and even then it had been Naruto first. But deep down she knew he cared because she was the only female he ever paid attention to outside the bedroom, such incidents were few and far between. After he never showed them the same attention again, she knew of only two confirmed cases. Neither of them was a personal experience unfortunately.
When he first arrived back from the Sound, she only ever saw him outside of training at the ramen shack where together they would quietly sit and listen to Naruto hold a one-sided conversation with him self. Things were very awkward between them. She felt so depressed and confused that Sakura went to talk to Kakashi about him, because she knew that Kakashi was the person who understood Sasuke best. He had returned her hope by telling her the fact that Sasuke would even bother to endure her presence meant he cared ALOT, because an Uchiha doesn’t do anything unless he wants to or needs to, she just needed to prove to him she was no longer an annoying fan girl.
She did, and by the end of the month no matter how stoic and sulky he remained she had a full drawer full of clothes in the Uchiha compound next to Naruto’s. And she had put some of his favorite, non-sweet foods in her pantry next to the extra ramen she kept for the weeks Naruto just came over; the three of them had become inspeperable.
These thoughts plaguing her mind as she stepped back into the clearing and looked down at Sai. He had sensed her, and looked up from the tiger he was drawing on his sketchpad.
“How did the hunt go Ugly?” Sai said smiling cheerily. “Is Dickless now, quite actually dickless?
“Not right now Sai-san I don’t really want to do this at the moment.” Sakura said defeat evident in her voice. At this Sai looked immensely confused. He knew the use of polite language had meant something. He had definitely read a book on such things. Yet still he pressed on.
“I don’t know why you’re so mad. They were probably doing you a favor any goy interested in you can’t be too bright.” Sai continued seeing the rage in her eyes as an encouragement. “What I mean to say is your kind of frail looking, flat-chested and altogether weak-“
She swung her fist at his head. He dodged and she threw another punch and another and another. Soon she was fighting with such intensity that Sai could no longer dodge. She landed two consecutive punches. Breathing heavily, she went to pry Sai out of the tree: to continue punching him. She pulled her fist up ready to punch again but Sai was too quick grabbing her wrists and switching their positions.
He had never seen Sakura rise to his insults this much before. He didn’t know why he kept provoking her. Something about the fire in her green eyes entranced him. Not knowing exactly what he was doing, Sai inched his face towards Sakura’s. Her eyes widened in surprise as he bent over to examine her eyes more closely. They were fascinating. Not solely one color like Sai’s but several hundred different shades of green. Acting purely on instinct he slid his hands down her arms to the swell of her chest. Putting his hands underneath her rib cage he lifted her up against the tree so she was almost eye level with him, her feet dangling six inches off the ground. Sai leaned in his breath on her neck
“Yo!” Said their team leader as he entered the clearing in the usual poofing manner, giving his customary one word greeting. Cheerful smile cut off by a look of shock that washed over his face. Looking from Sai to Sakura, he schooled his features back into impassive.
“Where are Naruto and Sasuke?” He asked only sounding mildly interested. There was a thump as Sakura hit the ground ass first.
“The teme and Dickless were scared away by the hag; she lost her temper again.” Sai reiterated impassively.
“Sakura you lost your temper with Sasuke?” Kakashi asked sounding mildly impressed. As much as she had changed and matured Sakura still rarely released her fury on the last Uchiha.
“They have been scaring off any men wanting to ask me out! Isn’t that ridiculous?! It’s not like I can’t take care of myself!” She looked up to see that Kakashi was looking away in what seemed to be shame. “Oh no…. not you too? You were in on this plot against my social life? What about you Sai? Did you help them?”
“Ugly I didn’t even know there were men desperate enough, but had I met them I would have deterred them by explaining how violent you were.” Sai said with Kakashi around he had insticntively regressed back into his normal behavior.
Sakura, already confused and angry at Sai for what had just happened and then dropping her unceremoniously on her ass, let out some angry and exasperated words about emotionally stunted men. She glared at Sai signifigantly, but she didn't just mean him; it was Kakashi and Sasuke too. Even sometimes Naruto. Sakura gave the ground an angry pound, resulting in quite a large split in the earth and then stormed out of the clearing taking her extra sports bra and shorts with her. Kakashi turned to Sai.
“What do you think you were doing?” He asked not allowing emotion to mottle his voice.
“I was learning Hatake-san.” Giving him a smile that Kakashi did not return.
“Aah. Well if I ever see you in such a position again I will not hesitate to rectify it. Or I will alert Sasuke and Naruto who will make sure it never happens again. Clear?” The Copy Nin said looking down at Sai but saying it in an almost believably light tone. "You are not my student anymore, I can’t force you to go apologize nor would I want you to if you didn’t mean it. But you mistreating Sakura in that way will not make you popular with your other teammates or me. Remember that.” As he finished he pulled the latest Icha Icha book out of his kunai pouch and jumped back to sit on the branch of a tree.
“Hatake-san I can not say I know what I have done wrong.” Sai said sounding confused.
“You may not know specifically what you did wrong.” Said Kakashi not looking up from his book. “But you knew it wasn’t right and you still continued.”
Sai silently sat for 30 minutes drawing in his sketchpad mostly drawings of eyes, waiting for their teammates to come back. He was ruminating over what Kakashi had said to him. He was trying to rember a passage from a book he had read about making friends and how to apoligize for something if you were not sure what you had done. Finally, he decided that he had invaded her personal space. He would like to get to know the knew feeling he had had better, but not in a way that would anger Sakura; he valued his body whole. Also he got the feeling Kakashi, Sasuke, and Naruto would not be happy with him if he explored this option in front of them. Kakashi broke the long pause.
“I’ll go retrieve Sakura because we can’t leave until she releases what I think is her water cage jutsu. You wait here for Naruto and Sasuke. With this particular jutsu people may enter they just can’t escape. So we could be here for quite a while if I can’t find her or convince her to take it down.” With out looking up he left the clearing in search of Sakura.
