Painful Pleasures

Chapter 3) Misread Fortune

Crimson eyes looked into hers with such distaste and loathing that she felt that her own green eyes were burning away into ash. The lips of his mouth moved from a deep frown to a scorning upwards pout. And then there was his scythe, three blades shining with the red fire in his eyes. With mute acknowledgment she saw him raise it above her neck, like so many times before, before giving her a questioning, demanding look.

“Tell me your sins.”

His voice sounded like church bells ringing in each and every one of her bones, resonating, marking that the hour had come. She felt disregarded in being regarded and as she had so many times before, but Sakura pushed all courage she had into her mouth.

So familiar an echo passed through her head as it was doing out of her mouth.

“My only sin was not killing you.”

And her head rolled away from her neck with a squish of blood following close behind.

“Bitch.”

Sakura jumped up out of slumber in a sweaty mess of fear. One hand reached to hold her head on her body while the other one swung in the air trying to fight off the offender. After a moment of spastic waves at nothing but air, Sakura opened her eyes to find herself slammed with the memories of being trapped and knocked out cold.

The man from earlier sat six feet from her, with as many as ten body guards surrounding him from all sides. Between faces she could read fright and humor which she linked directly to her nightmare, if it was night that is. It was hard to tell when no windows were present.

Hibari!

Like a dam breaking, a flood of anger hit her because she had failed to properly conduct her team which lead to her teammate’s endangerment, and so help her; if anything happened to Hibari on her clock there would be hell to pay. Sakura would never fail her teammates as long as she had one fighting breath in her.

“Where is she.”

Apparently the anger from the inside leaked into the outside and into her voice, many of the men shifted their grip on their weapon and went tight with anticipation.

“Well now,” His voice snapped Sakura out of her self loathing and anger. The voice was clamming and smooth, and if Sakura could touch it she was sure it would be fine silk flowing over her fingers. “Why on earth would a couple of beautiful kunoichi from Konoha want my company, and go so far as to desecrate holy ground to get it?”

There was something so enthralling about his voice that Sakura found it hard to even think about lying, let alone get the lie past her lips. Her body felt lethargic and warm, and the recent panic over her dream dissipated into a fuzzy -nice- feeling. Even the inner raging demon was swooned off her feet in the warm breeze of his voice. And as Sakura opened her mouth to give him an answer, she found herself telling the truth.

“I’m on a mission to track and protect the remaining JinchuuRiki from an organization known as Akatsuki. We came here to gather information on their whereabouts.”

There was a stunned silence and in a moment angered faces mimicked the shocked expression of the bald man in front of her. It did not go unnoticed, but in her state, Sakura was lulled in the haze of happiness that the mystery man’s voice caused.

“If you had good intentions in mind, woman, then why did you need to sneak in?” He sounded distinguished even in his own angry surprised question.

His voice changed, contempt and distrust lacing the waves of sound slicing the fog in her mind. “Because we did not know if you’d give us the information freely.”

Sakura started to come to her senses then, feeling the cuts he made in the fog open her mind. The comfortable drunken vison was lifting and Sakura was able to bring enough senses in perspective.

She was in a jutsu.

More specifically a genjutsu which the bald man invoked her into while she defenselessly remained unconscious.

Sakura slowly collected a small amount of chakra to her finger tips and in the center spot on her head; her inner persona mimicked the tiger hand symbol before yelling “KAI” at the top of her imaginative lungs. The fog that had trapped Sakura flew away as if a giant Temari fan had kicked on.

From her own genius, Sakura was now aware of three things.

One : she had not woken in a bed, or flung her arms around, she had not even spoken.

Two: all she had done was follow the flowing movements of his hands and she was trapped. A jutsu Sakura believed to be unique to the Akatsuki’s Uchiha Itachi.

Three: she really wanted to hurt this man.

First things first, how was she going to play along to a vision she could no longer see?

“KAI!”

Oh solution.

Sakura forged being shocked as the man who had trapped her suddenly ‘released’ her.

“We did not know who or why you were here. I’m sorry Sakura-san for trapping you like this, but now that I know who and why, I hope I can trust you. Please allow me to apologize by treating you to an early dinner, and then we can discuss further on matters.”

From this palpable absurdity, Sakura could weigh only two options. Kick ass to make herself feel better, or pretend to be understanding and try to get along with the man who recently probed her mind. Without her permission...

There was only thing Sakura knew for sure. She was NOT going to go back to Sai empty handed.

/”Could not get past the door ugly? Peh. Typical.”/

Sakura inwardly twinged before raising her cramped body from the held to long stance and nodded what could be assumed as approval.

They were lead by the still nameless man into a deeper part of the compound, followed by a half a dozen monks who deemed Sakura dangerous. Long ago Sakura had come to the conclusion that the person they sought was the man leading them, but something stuck out at her like a sore thumb. Although he was bald like the population in the monastery, he did not wear the customary clothing of a monk. There were no prayer beads in his hands, no modest bows, and no symbol of faith on his clothing like all the monks had. He even displayed a more cocky manner in his aura. Unlike the peaceful and balanced one most -as she has experienced- monks owned.

His eyes also. They looked... dangerous.

The hairs of warning decided to prickle Sakura’s neck again, almost as if solidifying her fear that something was amiss.

What rotten luck.

Turning in the corridors Sakura was thankful of her little friend because she knew the girl was counting a mantra in her head “right, left, left, left, right” preparing for their escape, while she herself was calculating the man leading them. Finally they stopped at a door, which was opened for them.

When he promised dinner, he truly meant a feast. The lone table centered in the room was filled to the brim with foods like pork and fish and beef, with a large helping of rice and even sake scattered between dishes. Sakura thought that maybe it was to feed more then just the three of them, but when he offered them a seat he proved that she was wrong.

“We did not know what foods you liked, so I had the cooks prepare a variety so that you would leave satisfied.”

What is going on here?

“So you knew we were coming, then.”

One nod confirmed her assumptions correct.

“You still have not introduced yourself.” The nervous voice of Hibari broke through the tension, becoming more and more on edge with all the moments passing. Apparently it was now clicking in her head that something was strange about their whole mission.

“No, I have not. Neither have you, Hibari-san.”

What. The. Hell. A girl can only take so much mystery before she gets pissed.

These monks and shinobi had expected them to come here, they had prepared for a battle, and they knew their names and possibly -all- their techniques. And in Sakura’s mind that equaled a leak or betrayal in Konoha.

But more importantly, this meant danger.

The sun had started to set, leaving orange and pink rays of dusk light to guide Sai and his little friend through the town looking for the bar that they call ‘Seven.’

Daichi had said that he knew the way, his cousin giving him adequate directions, but after an hour of following him blindly, Sai decided to be the one leading. The town’s layout was not confusing and meant that the bar they were looking for should be easy to find, yet making their tenth time around the village square they could not find it.

Sai sighed before he finally stopped giving Daichi the silent treatment. “What were the directions?”

Daichi snapped out of his depressed bubble long enough to hear and answer his pissed team leader. “He said it would be to across a place with bright neon lights and that all we would have to do is follow the end of the main street.”

Taking a moment to ponder what was said; Sai almost smacked himself with annoyance. The directions sucked, Daichi was an idiot boy who did not belong in the ninja world, and neon lights were hard to see in the day. That accompanied with the lack of road identification signs just made him...wait.

“Neon lights?”

Sai brought his hand up to hold against the stomach the he had covered in order to blend with the crowd. Neon lights, meaning AT NIGHT they should be looking.

It was hardly getting dark and a good half hour remained till the street lights went on. Moving his hand Sai made circles rubbing his gut to subside the snide remarks he was wishing to share, he decided that they should get a room and wait till night had fully taken over the city.

Already knowing the layout of the city from their continuous circles, Sai lead them both to a decent looking inn.

“So, do you believe?”

The lump of rice that was heading in the direction of Sakura’s mouth stopped instantly, her eyes traveling accusingly towards the man who introduced himself as “Sinobi Gashiru.” Contemplating for a moment Sakura put the rice into her mouth and answered.

“Do I believe what?”

“In god.”

Sakura wanted to answer yes, and no. Having witnessed so much death and pain it was easy to fall into the category atheist, but Sakura has also witnessed miracles. Men who would never walk again due to spinal damage finding themselves running in a years time. Women walking out of burning buildings, holding a child to her chest protecting it from the fire, without a single burn on her body.

She did not answer at all.

His eyes flickered, the candle light making his eyes look deep red and menace filled.

“So, do you follow any religion,” His interest oozed from his words “or do you follow any types of beliefs? I hear it is common for Shinobi or Kunoichi to follow that path of the death god.”

Sakura always had a down side to all her talent and big brains, and that was defiantly her tempter. It flared and caused her to be bluntly honest.

“No. I do not! Only people afraid of death seek it’s master!”

Gashiru was not shocked nor amused when Sakura snapped at him, but angry.

“What, please explain, is the misfortune of knowing your fear and seeking it out?”

“It is not about concurring fear when you seek to rule it!”

“Explain what the damage would be in controlling death!?”

“Would a religious man really need me to explain? Is it not blasphemy against god? Against other humans? We have a cycle, why break it for selfish gains. Anyone seeking immorality, with my experience, is not the type of person anyone would want around for a longer time!”

Sakura starred at Gashiru, shocked at her own willingness to argue. This man was strange. He invoked her emotions easily, while Hibari did not show the same signs of being effected.

“I think, judging from you current state, that we should ask the young lady to leave us.”

Hibari, wavered next to Sakura. Then stood and walked to the door when she did not hear protests from her leader. The door closed behind her.

Sakura did not take her eyes off of Gashiru’s own reddish pair. It was a good strategical move because now that they sat in an empty room with only each others company, his attitude changed.

“So. Doll. Let’s get down to business”
