Feedback is appreciated. I enjoy hearing from all of my readers. That you take the time to read is great, that you take the time to write is awesome. You are what makes writing worth while. I hope that you enjoy reading it and I look forward to your comments.

My sincere thanks to the following:

MewMew2: I am trying to keep the story true to itself without it becoming tedious. It’s quite the job, I assure you. Thanks for your support.

lexjamandme: He probably should be shaken just a bit. But then, that’s Sasuke, isn’t it? Thank you for you comment.

Trigger Happy Bitch: Denial is what Sasuke does best, I think. I’m glad you like my Naruto. And thanks for the spelling. I think I got it confused with Urimeshi somehow.

Lanie12777: Thanks for the support. I am trying to keep in character while still adding my own twist to the plot. I do a lot of rethinking and rewriting.

Once more, thank you all so much. The response has been overwhelming. I love it. You are all awesome.

More Than Just a Kiss…

Part Three

It only seemed as if Sasuke was successful in blocking his growing feelings for Naruto as he withdrew into himself more and more. Even the blonde’s invitations to eat and his constant chattering drew no response from the sullen dark-haired boy. But Naruto never gave up.

Damn, he can be as persistent as Sakura, thought Sasuke, savagely. Only cuter. Wait, did I just think that? I’m supposed to be putting those kind of thoughts out of my head. But how can I when he’s always in front of me?

“Naruto!” barked Sasuke.

“What?” asked the blonde, stopping in mid-sentence.

“Stop talking. You’re driving me crazy,” exclaimed the Uchiha.

“If I do, will you go eat ramen with me?” asked Naruto, eyes wide with innocence.

Sasuke snorted softly. Why was this annoying person always able to coerce him into doing things that he didn’t really want to do?

Naruto took his non response as agreement, grabbed his hand and started to pull the dark-haired boy in the direction of the Ichiraku Ramen shop. Sasuke shook his hand free, but continued to follow, somehow feeling at peace with himself now that he had given in once more to Naruto’s will.

Is it always going to be this way? he sighed to himself. Well, it could be worse. At least he’s quiet now.

And so the days before the third exam passed quickly.

~*~

When the genin hopefuls gathered prior to the start of the third exam, they were informed that there were too many of them, and so there would be an elimination round to make the numbers more manageable. Both Naruto and Sasuke were successful in their matches, however Sasuke’s fight left him in the hospital after the activation of Orichimaru’s seal in his body and Kakashi’s binding of the seal. This left the Uchiha with too much time to brood on his situation as the rest of the candidates vied for the coveted places in the final exam.

Why had he been so weak when faced by Orichimaru? Why couldn’t he even move? Why had it been Naruto that had finally been the one to save himself and Sakura? He just couldn’t accept that the blonde was somehow stronger in will then he was. That was just too unthinkable. He was the number one rookie, after all. So why had he failed and stupid Naruto succeeded? There was no logical answer except that he was letting the blonde make him weak. That had to be it. He had to make himself focus on his goal, that of killing Uchiha Itachi above all else. Nothing else mattered. He could not let nothing else matter.

And so, with his resolve strengthened, he vowed to himself that he would become stronger, he would achiever his goal. After all, wasn’t that what Itachi wanted? For him to become strong enough to face him? And in reaching this goal, a certain blonde had no place in his life. Sasuke would just have to keep reminding himself of this.

His resolve went out the window when Naruto came to visit him.

“Are you feeling any better?” asked the concerned blonde.

“Hn,” Sasuke just snorted and looked away.

“I was really worried about you,” continued Naruto.

“Don’t be. It takes more that that to take me out,” said Sasuke, a tinge of bitterness in his tone.

“But I do worry. I… I don’t want anything to happen to you,” the blonde stammered. “I want to be there for you.”

“What? You think you need to be there to rescue me?” asked Sasuke sarcastically. “I’m not Sakura, you know.”

“I know that. I just want to be there for you, to help you,” said Naruto softly. “That’s what friends do. They help each other.”

“I don’t need your help. When I get out of here, I’m going to train and get stronger, I’ll help myself,” retorted Sasuke. “I don’t need friends. Friends are a distraction. You are a distraction.”

“I distract you?” asked Naruto softly. “How? When I do this?” and he reached out to touch Sasuke’s hand, stroking it gently. “Or how about this?” and he leaned over the other boy and brushed his lips gently against the other’s.

Sasuke pulled away, panting, a wild look in his eyes.

“Yes! Yes, when you do any of that. Just thinking about you is a distraction!” he exclaimed. “Stop it. Please, stop it.”

“Hummm…” Naruto mused quietly, pleased with his power over the other. It was nice to know that he was in the Uchiha’s thoughts so much. But his teasing was brought to an abrupt end when Kakashi-sensei came in to see Sasuke.

Naruto immediately jumped Kakashi and started to beg him for additional training, only to be refused and finally turned over to the mysterious Jiraiya. Grumbling and complaining all of the way, he left with the older shinobi, sure that he could teach him nothing worth while. All it did was separate him from his beloved Sasuke.

~*~

It seemed as if Naruto couldn’t get the dark-haired boy out of his thoughts. Or his dreams. More often then not his concentration was broken by an errant thought of the brooding Uchiha.

Just what was it about the other boy that had him so captivated, he often wondered. It wasn’t that they had a great relationship. Far from it. Sasuke barely treated him civil most of the time. But the blonde found himself drawn more and more to the brooding boy in much the same way that a hummingbird is drawn to an exceptionally sweet flower. Was it that he thought Sasuke was sweet? No! Far from it. So, what was it? Naruto could only attribute it to wanting that which was most unobtainable. And Sasuke was probably the most unobtainable person he knew. Even more so than Sakura.

With a sigh of frustration, Naruto finally succumbed to sleep, only to be plagued by a dream of his untouchable boyfriend, who was very uncharacteristically laughing and being playful. The dream was once again filled with forbidden kisses, lingering touches and soft sighs. And Naruto awoke to a wet, cold dawn once again.

As the day set for the third exam neared, Jiraiya and Naruto returned from Naruto’s training, Naruto feeling more confident in himself. Circumstances found the blonde almost late for his match, nearly causing himself to be disqualified. Naruto was ecstatic over his new technique, and wanted to share it with Sasuke, sure that the other would be impressed with the progress that Naruto had made, only to find that the other was nowhere to be found. Naruto was disappointed, but had little time to think about it as his match with Hyuuga Neji was about to begin.

~*~

Sasuke had disappeared off with Kakashi-sensei, who agreed to work with him on his sharingan. After all, Kakashi was the only one who truly understood just what kind of training that one with his abilities needed. He was pleased to know that Kakashi was also prepared to teach him a new and more deadly technique.

But Sasuke found himself brooding even more that usual, wishing to himself that he could have at least had a chance to eat ramen with the babbling blonde idiot before he’d left with Kakashi. He hated to admit it, even to himself, but the energetic blonde soothed him, calmed him, and he missed the idiot. Naruto had somehow insinuated himself into the Uchiha’s life, and Sasuke was starting to feel as if a small part of himself was missing without Naruto’s constant presence.

He found it hard to concentrate at times, and Kakashi-sensei scolded him on occasion for not maintaining focus. This just seemed to make it even harder for the Uchiha to concentrate, but he was determined to push thoughts of the blonde out of his mind until he could master the new technique.

At night, however, when he could finally relax, Sasuke actually found himself able to sleep, the nightmares kept at bay by that one small, bright ray of sunshine: Naruto.

How has this come to pass? he wondered. And when will it end? More importantly, how would it end? Not well, that’s almost certain. Naruto had no place in his plans for revenge. Best to divorce himself from the blonde completely and concentrate solely on what needed to be done. Easier said than done, but Sasuke felt that he had to try, even if it was a losing battle.

And so the two boys, who were opposites sides of the same coin, slept restlessly, each dreaming of the one person that obsessed them.

~*~

The third exams had drawn many notables from the other villages and the surrounding area, all eager to see what they deemed as the ultimate match: Sasuke vs. Gaara. None of the other matches seemed to matter to anyone, but the outcome of the much anticipated match was in doubt as Sasuke had yet to show up.

Somehow Naruto had managed to beat Hyuuga Neji in his match, and he was ecstatic, wanting to share his good fortune with his best friend, but there was still no sign of Sasuke. At the request of the Kazakage, Sasuke and Gaara’s match was postponed until all of the rest of the matches had finished, but there still was no sign of the Uchiha. Naruto was really beginning to worry now. Had something happened to Sasuke and he hadn’t been in a position to help him? No, he could hardly believe that, but Sasuke had been attacked by the rogue-nin, Orichimaru, and Gaara seemed to have some kind of death wits for Sasuke. So where was he? Naruto found that his stomach was tied up in knots with worry, but there seemed as if there was nothing he could do. He had never felt so helpless in his life.

Then, just as the Hokage was about to declare the match forfeit, the brooding Uchiha appeared with Kakashi-sensei. Naruto felt the waves of relief breaking over him, and he tried to catch the other boy’s eye, but Sasuke was focused in on himself. He had no room for distractions at this moment.

The Uchiha saw his idiot boyfriend trying to get his attention, but he studiously ignored him. He needed nothing to take his concentration away from this match with Gaara. He knew the red-head was dangerous from his previous meeting with him and that nothing short of his death would satisfy the other, but Sasuke had no intentions of dying on this day.

The arrival of the Uchiha seemed to precede the Hell that was about to explode around the peaceful village of Konoha, for it was during this final event that Orichimaru’s devious plan would go into action. The match between Gaara and Sasuke was nothing less then spectacular as Sasuke unveiled his new technique, Chidori, but even that devastating move was unable to shake Gaara. It was during the chaos of the battle that Orichimaru moved.

It was all that the Anbu could do to protect their village and people, but it was spared, though not without great sacrifice. The Third gave his very life to protect that which he loved best. Everybody found themselves drawn into the ensuing battle, and when Sasuke disappeared into the forest after Gaara and his siblings, it was feared that he might never come back.

Kakashi sent Naruto out with a team of his cohorts to find and aide the Uchiha, and it was with his heart in his throat that Naruto rushed after his beloved Sasuke.

Hold on, he thought. I’m coming. I’ll be there to help you. I won’t let you die, I promise. Wait for me, Sasuke.
