Chapter Three

"Rock Lee, there is a man waiting for you."

"Hokage, sir, am I allowed to ask who it is?"

"Indeed you are, though I am quite sure that you know who it is," replied the Third Hokage, raising a knarled hand to whisk away the cloud covering the scene taking place below them.

"But that's..."

"Maito Gai," confirmed the Third with a solemn nod. "He's been down there for a good half-hour talking to you."

"Gai-Sensei... Yes, I see. Does he know I'm not there?"

"He last took your pulse twenty minutes ago."

"I understand." A long paused, or perhaps a relatively short one, occured before Lee finally spoke again. "Is there anyway I could talk to him? I would not like to leave him like this."

"I am not sure if returning is wise. You understand that if you return to the ground at this moment, the pain will be almost unbearable?"

"That does not matter. I would much prefer there to here."

"You would still have to come back here at some point." The Hokage thought a moment and then continued. "Usually the only excuse to return to life is... well, undying love that needs attention." Another long silence ensued, speaking more volumes than either male had thus far.

"I see. Rock Lee, if that is how you truly feel then by all means... go."

"May I?"

"Lee?"

"Yes, sir?"

"Lee?!"

"What is it?"

"You're awake!" The coal-colored eyes of Rock Lee fluttered open. In the splintered beams of moonlight, there was a man bent over him. His pupils dilated immensely and the view of Maito Gai was registered in the teenager's mind.

"G-Gai S-s-sensei!" The image of his mentor swam before his eyes and ignoring the shattering pains in his body, Lee launched himself, tears and all, into his arms. They folded gently around him, cradling him in his greatest pain.

"Lee... I thought I lost you, I really did."

"Sensei, you really have no idea how close you came to it." The moonlight shivered in his tears, sending pale blue lights dancing across his young face. His grip on Gai tightened.

"What made you follow Zenaku?" The question. Lee's answer was already on his lips, as if he had forseen the inquiry.

"He told me he knew where you were and he was going to settle terms with you." Gai's heart thrummed twice against his ribs, painfully and then all seemed to stop.

"Lee, that was sweet... but stupid. So stupid," Gai hardly realized he, too, was crying. Lee, losing his composure, lost his grip on his teacher and crumbled into his arms.

"Sometimes people do stupid things for the ones they love," said Lee quietly, closing his eyes. Tears suddenly halted in their attempts to brim over Gai's eyes. A small smile perched at the corners of Gai's mouth.

"I love you, too, Lee." It was Lee's turn to smile and he did. It did not, however, last long, as Gai's mouth overtook his.
