Differences

DIFFERENCES

Gai definitely wasn't Iruka. The jounin in no way looked like the chunin. Iruka's skin was naturally the dusky color of caramel; Gai's skin was only slightly tanned from training outdoors in the sun. Iruka's face was beautiful, symmetrical, often cutely blushing, with a scar across the bridge of his nose that was somehow endearing; Gai's face was too strong to be beautiful, with heavy brows and cheekbones, and an angular jaw. Gai's body, large and muscular, in no way looked like Iruka's smaller, slighter frame.

So why, when Yamato stared at the tai-jutu master, asleep on his bed, could he not stop thinking about Iruka? But, then again, even if he was starring at a lamp or something as equally mundane, he'd probably be thinking of Iruka.

After he and Gai had reached the wooden house he'd made himself, nestled in the great trees around Konoha, Yamato had deposited the intoxicated jounin on his bed. Gai had immediately fallen asleep, depression subduing him as much as the alcohol.

So, now, sitting on the wood-paneled floor next to his bed, arms tight around his drawn up knees, Yamato stared at Gai and thought of Iruka.

Iruka was always so finicky, real particular about the things that belonged to him. Would the chunnin be upset that he let Gai sleep on his side of the bed? It's not like Iruka's using it tonight... Yamato felt like punching something at the thought, or maybe breaking down like Gai did earlier. He rose to his feet, and began pacing. From one side of the room to the other, he paced. He couldn't stay still, he needed to take some sort of action, or he'd explode. Yamato's pacing became tighter and quicker; he couldn't stop thinking about Iruka. Iruka touching Kakashi—Iruka fucking Kakashi. Perhaps the copy-nin would even let the chunnin lower his ever-present mask to kiss him... While pacing and seething, Yamato kept darting his gaze to the sleeping jounin on the bed.

Yamato's pacing soon became so tight that it ceased altogether, until he was just standing in front of the bed, shaking. Then, before he could think of what he was doing, Yamato fell to his knees, and kissed the sleeping jounin hard on the mouth.

Gai's first bleary thought was, 'Kakashi.' Gai immediately returned the forceful kiss, taking control. Leaning up on one arm, the green beast took his lover's face with his other hand. At the feeling of the smooth wood of Yamato's head-piece, Gai opened his eyes and jumped back.

“Ya-Yamato!”

The wood-nin's eyes were red with unshed tears, with the force of keeping his emotions held back over this past month. Now, on his knees before his fellow shinobi, Yamato begged. “Please, Gai. Please, I need this.”

Gai was still too surprised to do more than stammer, “But-but what a-about, Iruka...”

Yamato let out a hollow laugh, “Why would you care about Iruka?”

“Kakashi...”

Yamato cut him off with a hard-bitten, “Please, don't say his name.” It had been the worst betrayal, that the one Iruka had gone to was the copy-nin. Kakashi, the man who had once been his ANBU captain. The man who had saved his life on countless missions...was also the man who was killing him now. Loyalty...Yamato had felt so much loyalty to both of them, for different reasons. That was what hurt—he still felt that loyalty. Loyalty to his ex-commanding officer, loyalty to the man he loved. Even their break of trust couldn't overcome the kind heart, that he wanted to rip out of his own chest.

“I feel like I'm going to shake apart, like an old oak in an earthquake. Please, Gai, I need something to hold me together.”

Yamato kissed him again, not forceful this time but heart-breakingly sweet. Gai, his emotions always held so close to the surface, felt tears spill from his eyes. Never once had the green beast been unfaithful to the copy-nin, for all the care Kakashi could have given. Now, Gai realized just how foolish he'd been. He hadn't been special to Kakashi, Gai was just one of many. Kakashi had kept coming back, because he knew that his fellow jounin was a sure thing. The tai-jutsu master had been so naïve, thinking he was special to Kakashi, just because Kakashi was special to him. Of course the masked-nin had been special to him, Kakashi was Gai's first and only romantic relationship. Well, never again. Never again would he play the fool for the other. He knew his own self worth. I deserve better than this.

The fire of his conviction burning away his tears, Gai kissed Yamato back.
