There was a tap on his door.
"Yo, Kazekage-Sama. We just got word that Konoha's coming." Kankuro leaned in the door, a pleased smirk on his painted face. In one hand was the message off the bird from Konohagakure.
"Hn." The teal green eyes that had looked up when the door opened, slid sideways to their sister Temari as she stood beside his desk. They had been going over reports. "Maito Gai's psychological status has not changed?"
"No. He still hasn't made much progress with our healers. We can't get him past saying 'you know what'."
Kankuro, shutting the door, came to stand on the other side of Gaara. His puppet hit the floor. "His amnesia isn't going anywhere any time soon. I find the fact that he can’t say anything about shinobi funny, but that's just me. I bet he even thinks in 'you know what's'."
"Since it looks like he was tortured for information, he's lucky if that's the only psychological trauma he was left with. Tsunade herself will have to deal with the very worse of the damage. We seriously need to see about sending some of our medics to Konoha for training." The blonde woman arched an eyebrow at her smart-mouthed brother. "So who are they sending from Konoha?"
"Didn't say, but they're sending two teams. Gai's old team’s probably one that’s been mobilized.”
There was a knock on the door, and Gaara's secretary stuck his head around the door. "Gai-sensei and his escort are here."
"Send them in."
Genin team fourteen entered at a babble, Mito Gai herded inside from their midst. He seemed closer to normal now, but he'd been found as a field hand with particular and crippling wide spread damage to the flesh and bones of his legs and feet. X-ray and chakra scans of his entire body had confessed to hundreds of breaks and re-breaks, disruptions and alterations in the pathways of his chakra system, scarred organs and the remains of other induced traumas. Sunagakure's medical facilities had patched him up much better than any civilian hospital would, but some of that damage remained untouchable like the psychological damage. Only the Tsunade-hime of Konohagakure would be able to make successful in-roads on it. For now...
"Temari-san! Such loveliness as yours makes an already youthful day dazzling!" From within the dune colored flack jacket, Gai produced a rose and presented it to the Kazekage’s sister on one bent knee, head bowed and the other hand held sincerely over his heart.
The siblings startled. Then Temari composed herself and reached for the origami flower made so well it looked real on its green stem. The genin team clapped politely as she accepted it. “Thank you, Gai-san, but what have I told you about passing out flowers?”
“That it makes everyone jealous?”
“Uncomfortable. And?”
“And I can not make enough for everyone to have one because it would leave Sunagakure barren of all paper goods?”
“And?”
“And it is my duty as a ‘you-know-what’ to ensure that future generations have paper!” he exclaimed.
Temari managed to hide her sigh as Gaara zeroed in on the phrase with a frown. Everyone else let out their sighs at the man clothed in a Suna uniform, yet not allowed to carry weapons. (He has still not made any progress if he can not even say the word ‘shinobi’.)
“Here’s the latest report from the medics.” The female genin set a scroll on Gaara’s desk. “Just from watching though, you can tell there isn’t any progress.”
“Our taijustu is improving, though.” countered one of the others. Which was a fluke. Mito Gai could only do beginner forms, Leaf forms at that, but he did it with such precision and care that every genin team assigned to him had actually learned them better than the Suna forms. “And we managed to teach Gai-san a beginner form.”
This garnered the three siblings’ attentions. Temari demanded, “Do the medics know? Did you tell them? You know this could be a break through in his memories.”
“Yes.” All four of them before her chorused.
“Good. Go on and get something to eat. It’s nearly time, anyway.” She pointed at the door. They watched the genin team take Maito Gai away to feed him, chatting and babbling amicably among the four of them.
“They’re getting attached just like the other teams. We’ll have to rotate in another team to watch him.”
“Make it a team weak in taijutsu. Even not himself and crippled, Maito Gai can't help being a good teacher.”
Kankuro looked sideways at his younger brother. “You sure you’re not going to off him? ‘Cause I still remember way back when you were sitting on the roof and stuff, muttering about-”
“I will not kill Maito Gai.” replied the red head. “There’s no advantage to it. Lee wouldn’t like it either.”
Temari settled against the wall. "I don’t suppose that lazy ass would make the journey from Konoha with them now that he’s war leader, would he?”
"Oooo, does Temari have a crush?" Kankuro grinned mockingly. His big sister pointed a stern finger at him. "Kankuro, shut up. Or do I need to give you more paperwork to do?"
“I’m out of here,” said the puppeteer, hoisting Crow. He teleported out with, “Laters!”
“Coward. Well, I’ve got to run down and talk to the medics about Gai.” Temari pushed off from the wall and headed out the door. “You should go eat, too, Gaara.”
With everyone finally gone, Gaara picked up the tiny scroll with Tsunade's precise scrawl. There were no hidden codes to look for, though he still looked automatically.
(Gai's old team is probably one that has been mobilized.) His brother's words echoed in his head. That old team meant Rock Lee, who had returned to Suna after his resurrection on Tsunade's orders to retrain the Kazekage until his energy levels were back up to par.
The young man had followed his assigned task to a tee, keeping Gaara on a strict schedule of exercise, meals and sleep while Temari juggled the administration and political mess as both her brothers recovered. Without the one-tailed beast to draw from, the red head had fallen into bed exhausted every night, even when he had been permitted a nap during the day.
At the time, he had considered Rock Lee a form of subtle torture. But then his body had finally responded to the training, grown in strength and endurance. He was still slender, was not big on muscle mass, but he could finally use his sand as he used to for increasingly greater lengths of time.
As strict as Lee had been, he had been 'warm and friendly', as Kankuro had put it. He would go up and beyond that; providing shelter from the sun, extra food and water when Gaara needed them... waited patiently for Gaara to wake when he suddenly dropped in the middle of training. Lee's tolerance and patience had etched themselves in Gaara's mind, as had Lee's honesty and overt manners. Temari had half hoped those manners would rub off on him.
Lee's lack of fear of Gaara was the one thing the Kazekage had come to rely on. Said lack of fear made the red head feel like that was normal. Even his numerous stalker/fan girls were still fearful of him.
The Leaf jounin had held conversations with him despite his one-word responses. Lee had played Shogi and Go with him and lost every time. He had cheered Gaara on despite him not wanting the Leaf to.
He had almost thought of Lee as a friend.
One day Lee increased his own training (because even while training Gaara, he trained himself) and the games stopped. The conversations stopped. Lee would drag himself in at late hours, collapse into bed and then begin the routine all over again.
Then Gaara had met all the requirements and Lee had returned to Konoha.
Gaara had never understood Lee's withdrawal from him. He had waited with his own brand of patience for the taijustu master to come to him, for Lee had often said to share a matter halved its burdens. Lee had worked till he dropped, then worked some more. He had never come to confide in Gaara.
Gaara was still waiting.
