Ch. 3

A/N: It just seems like my chapters keep getting smaller...the first one was three and a half pages, the second two and a half, and this one is almost two pages... ^^;

================================================================================================

“It's been over two hours now, Haku, later than you'd said he'd be.”

“That's because I've miss-judged.” Alighting next to Zabuza on the rugged bark of the branch, Haku gave his report of his second scout of the day. “It appears that the party has decided not to stop at the village—they're going around it.”

Zabuza let his thoughts drift inward, deciding on their next course of action given recent findings. He saw the man's wisdom in avoiding the village altogether (it would cancel out all contact with persons not directly under his command). This way he wouldn't need to be constantly watching his back in fear of every villager being a potential hit man.

“Describe the layout of the road our target is taking.”

“The road is flat and unshaded, leaving no places to realistically set up an ambush. There is a wooded area within an easy bow shot running along the side of the route; it wouldn't be hard to keep him insight. But the distance is too far for one of our weapons to reach him if thrown.”

“Hn.”

“I got a closer look at our target's hired guards. None of them are full shinobi, but they have enough training in the art to but some chakra behind their brute force.”

Difficult. But, then again, he had expected nothing less. “For now, we'll follow them at a distance through the trees. Use no chakra. Keep your chakra signature suppressed, one of them might be advanced enough in nin-jutsu to detect it.”

“Hai, Zabuza-san.”

“Move out.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Zabuza-san?”

Not looking up from his canteen, the missing-nin gave a grunt.

Haku interpreted this as approval to continue. “What's our target's name?”

Zabuza shot his apprentice a sharp look before taking a savage bite of his rations. “Haramishi Kah.”

“What did Haramishi-san do upset our employer?”

Finishing his rations, Zabuza grabbed up his gear. “Such questions are unimportant.”

Haku replaced his oval mask, ready to continue tailing Haramishi now that their rest was over. “It just seems that the taking of another's life should have some justification to it.”

Jumping onto the branch of an oak, Zabuza looked through the leaves to locate their target and his party once more. “You've killed before, Haku.”

“Every thing that Zabuza-san has wished of me, I have done.” The boy held no bitterness in his tone. For Zabuza, the life of another had never held any weight. The taking of life was something that came naturally to him--most often he was apathetic towards it, some times he even found it fun. Haku never found enjoyment in killing, in fact, the very act broke his tender heart each time. This part of himself, the part that wanted to never do ugly deeds and only to live in such a way as to make the world more beautiful, this was the part of himself that he sacrificed for his master. He'd continue to kill and do ugly things so long as his master wished for him to, because this was how Haku was able to do the one beautiful thing in his life—serving Zabuza.

Traveling once more through the tree-tops, objective insight, the shinobi waited for opportunity to present itself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I heard something.”

“Yeah, the sound of yourself speaking—you haven't shut up all night.”

“Just trying to keep you from falling asleep while on watch.”

“How else am I supposed to be well rested?”

“Your not paid to be 'well rested.' But I really did hear something.”

“A rabbit, or a squirrel. Whatever it is catch it, put it on a spit, and shut up about it so I can get my beauty sleep.” With that, the body guard pulled his hood over his eyes and settled in for forty winks.

“Doesn't anyone take pride in their work anymore?” the first guard muttered to himself. At midnight their shift would end, and two others would take their place, they still had a half hour left. Shaking his head at his partner, nearly invisible in the night and his own concealing clothing, he went to investigate the noise. So far, this had been the best gig he'd landed. Great pay—couldn't argue that—and only a couple of actual attackers that needed fending off. If he did well enough of a job this time around, maybe his employer would consider him for future work. After all, powerful, unscrupulous men always needed protecting from someone or other.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In one hand Haku held a frying pan that they carried with them for camp cooking, and in the other he held a kunai. The boy struck the pan with the knife in such a way that the sound was sure to attract the attention of anyone on alert, but without making the noise loud enough to wake anyone sleeping.

When the lone guard came to investigate, as they knew he would, Zabuza made swift work of him. With a swipe of a blade to the neck from behind, the body guard fell to the ground with a quite gurgle.

“The rest should be sleeping. Move quickly. Kill soundlessly.”

“Hai, Zabuza-san.”

Nine guards and one lord—all sleeping, all civilians. For two trained shinobi, it didn't get get easier.

“Move out.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The grass, wet with dew, didn't crunch under their feet, and the night held no moon to give away their position as they crossed the distance from the trees to the target's camp. Master and apprentice made no mistake that could send up an alert.

“Now!” shouted a harsh voice into the once still air. Immediately the nine guards jumped from their bedrolls, armed, with Haramishi no where in sight.

They had made no mistake, yet still the guards had some how known.

Eight men, various weapons at the ready, rushed Haku. Surprised, Haku fought back. The remaining guard, the one that had shouted, went for Zabuza. Bringing his great sword crashing down over his head, Zabuza expected to cut the man in two, instead his sword was met by the pronged side of a battle hammer. His eyes flashed in recognition—he only knew of one person who fought with a battle hammer, and with strength enough to fend off one of his attacks. In the negligible light lent by the stars, Zabuza couldn't see him, but the man's laugh, distorted and taunting, was enough to identify him.

“Guess who, Zabuza-chan.”

Mirko...

A/N: Kinda a cliff hanger; remember, reviews make me update faster! It seems I have decided to keep writing this, but how quickly I come out with new chapters depends entirely on how inspired I am, lol. Their was no Zabu/Haku in this chapter at all! Oh no! I'll probably compenstate by making the next chapter ridiculously yoai-infested (like putting random yoai couples from other series in it...like Riku/Sora! j/k)
