In the alley outside the club, away from the dozens of eyes and the bright lights, Naruto doubled over near the sidewalk and emptied his stomach, but the fear still buzzed deep inside him and wouldn’t settle. He gasped in air as he tried to get over the shock and the pain and –

“Why is he here?” Naruto asked silently, unable to make his body surge forward with the hatred he should have felt and scream and tear at something, anything, anyone—Kyuubi.

“What the fuck does he want?! Why is he back? That bastard! How the hell hasn’t he been caught yet?!” Sasuke didn’t understand, couldn’t understand, why Naruto seemed so deflated and hopeless and resigned to the presence of Kyuubi. The bastard had hurt Naruto so much and yet he had never been detained. He had fled like the coward he was and was never seen again. But what Sasuke couldn’t begin to fathom was why Kyuubi was back. Some form of twisted and mindless revenge?

It hadn’t been enough to kill his parents and later kidnap and rape and torture his brother, but now he was back for more. There were no words to describe what kind of monster Kyuubi was. How his demon eyes caused fear in the bravest of adversaries and made even Sasuke think twice now that he was actually lucid enough and his body wasn’t overcome with emotion. But dammit! What the bastard did to Naruto incensed him. But what got to him more was Naruto’s lack of emotions regarding his brother. He had been so traumatized and broken after what his brother did.

Kyuubi had made Naruto presence his parents’ murder. Naruto had tried to close his eyes, but the screams his parents gave, even as they were lying to little Naruto that everything was going to be okay, kept the nightmares coming even when he was awake. It had taken so long to finally get to talk about it after so many therapy sessions and then to try to get over it and move on. Now, his nightmares were few and far between. It was a miracle that he could live and function like a regular person and tried to be cheerful and be the loud mouthed joking person he had been before Kyuubi decided to go insane, causing his brother to almost loose his sanity as well. And now Naruto looked like he was on the verge of loosing it completely, his whole body shaking as the blonde was still dry heaving; his stomach was now empty, but the memories made him gag and had his stomach flipping unpleasantly. He was ashen and hyperventilating as his lungs refused to cooperate with his brain and get the much needed oxygen. Kiba stared at Naruto worryingly.

“What’s wrong with Naruto? Did you drink too much buddy?” Kiba asked in jest knowing that his friend was a cheap drunk. He had no idea what had happened to his buddy before-- they'd only known each other for less than 3 years.

Sasuke had known the blonde since they were in diapers and had suffered with him when he had been kidnapped by his own twisted brother. Gaara and Neji had known the blonde for a few years before the event. They had gone to the same school and lived close by, and they had gotten close enough to find out what happened when Naruto didn’t return and why he was the way he was when he did come back.

Kiba was oblivious to the murderous aura that surrounded the three possessively protective men and the reason as to why Naruto looked like an empty shell.

Gaara’s blood boiled as he thought of Kyuubi and as he saw the empty look on Naruto’s face. The blonde looked as though he wasn’t there. As though his soul had left his body and he was no longer part of the living world. Ever since he had met Naruto, Gaara felt a possessive pull towards the blonde, as though he was treasure that needed to be protected at all times from everything. The blonde had been a ray of sunshine that lit up Gaara's day; even with the closed off person the redhead used to be. His antisocial ways grew tenfold and the redhead had been what most considered goth for most of his life after what had happened to Naruto, feeling that it was somehow his fault. In his mind it made sense and so he had punished himself, cutting deep lines into his wrist as a form of atonement.

Naruto had made friends with everyone he had met, even Gaara and the prickly Hyuuga, who had softened thanks to him. Naruto had made everyone love him and want to protect him. And Gaara had let him down. He had been so angry with himself when he heard that Naruto had been kidnapped. He had been devastated after he learned everything the blonde had gone through. Gaara had felt homicidal. It had taken so long for the blonde to return, and then to see him try to live life with a semblance of normalcy had made the redhead respect him more and look towards the blonde in awe. Being attracted to the blonde physically didn’t help either. Being a very instinctual person, following his instincts more than humanly normal, and being the seme that he was, he felt an almost animalistic pain at not having been there to protect Naruto as he had promised himself he would do. And now to see that the blonde was once more on the precipice and about to break right in front of him tore at his heart and made him ache to hold the blonde. He did as his instincts were screaming at him to do and made a grab for the blonde, holding him tightly to his body as though he could mold the blonde to him and shield him from everything and everyone. Kyuubi. That fucker!

It was then that Naruto broke. With a heart wrenching cry he let the dam of tears burst from his eyes as all the pain and hatred of so many years finally cracked him. Seeing his brother once more had proven to bring only one good thing: a realization that he had not been well. He had been living a façade for far too long and he felt safe and protected as though nothing could get to him in Gaara’s arms. Kiba stared shocked at the blonde unable to comprehend why Naruto—cheerful, happy Naruto—had broken like this and so badly, in the alley of a club. At his perplexed look, Neji spoke to him, but it was mostly a dismissal.

“Leave Kiba. We’ll take him home.”

“Like hell you will. I want to know what’s wrong with him.” Kiba demanded, the firm set of his stance accompanying his stubborn retort.

“Now isn’t the time Kiba.” Sasuke ground out, unable to contain himself. The barked statement made the dog lover flinch and he backed off but still continued to stay with them, not knowing what was going on, but willing to offer his friend any support he could.

Neji looked on helplessly, wanting to go after Kyuubi but a bigger part wanted to do what Gaara had done, and wrap his arms around the blonde’s shaking body, wanting to soothe his fears and promise that everything was going to be okay. But he knew: if Kyuubi did anything, Naruto would not be coming back from this one, alive or otherwise. They would be left without their ray of light in an otherwise dull and grey world. Naruto had made him see so many things in a different perspective and, with his carefree and loving nature, had made the brunette fall for him. Neji stared longingly at the crying blonde, but knew that now was not the time to think about that.

It was a long time before Naruto fell asleep from exhaustion, tears streaking his tan cheeks, the scars from when Kyuubi kidnapped him and almost destroying something so precious looking more like tattoos than actual scars, stood out even more on his pallid face. He fell asleep in Gaara’s arms, falling heavily against the redhead in his exhaustion. Gaara looked wistful for a few seconds. Maybe Naruto would forget this happened. Maybe Naruto would be willing to run away with him and never look back, forget all about Kyuubi and everything that had happened and go on and be safe and happy with him. But as he knew, that would not happen. Naruto would not allow that, no matter how logical it was. Gaara continued to hold the blonde, propping him upright, his arms wound tight around the shorter man’s waist, holding him to his chest possessively.

“We have to take him home. And we have to stay with him." Neji said, looking at the blonde with a mixture of pity and longing, wanting to be the one who had his arms wrapped around Naruto.

"If Kyuubi found out he was here tonight, then he already knows where Naruto lives. My place is biggest, we’ll take him to my house.” No one argued with Sasuke, knowing his mind assessed the situation quickly (nothing compared to Shikamaru, but the strategist wasn’t there) and knowing that what he said made sense.

“We’ll have to stay with him. He’ll have nightmares.” Neji pointed out, his tone wizened and experienced. Naruto had stayed over at his house many times, the nightmares weren’t frequent, but the blonde’s shrieks haunted him to his very soul. He hated that Naruto had suffered so much and was still paying the price for something someone else had done.
