You Belong With Me

A week had gone by after Sakura wrote that song and Naruto kept thinking about what she said. Should he tell Sasuke? I mean he always assumed that Sasuke would freak out and hate him but they were best friends, they had been friends since they were little, surely Sasuke wouldn’t push him away after all these years….who was he kidding? Of course Sasuke would push him away and then he would never leave Karin. Naruto sighed and kept walking towards the music room. Just as he turned the corner to walk into the music room, he saw Sasuke standing by the door. When Sasuke noticed him, he walked over to his best friend.

“Hey Naruto, I’ve been looking for you everywhere.”

“Why, what’s up?”

“Well, football practice was cancelled since the dance is tonight and most of the guys on the team are planning to go. So I was wondering if you wanted to come over and we could chill before the dance. I’ll even buy some ramen at the store for you and I won’t say anything about how gross and unhealthy it is.”

“Yea, sounds cool”, Naruto replied with a smile, “but I’m not going to the dance.”

“You’re not? Why?”

Naruto shrugged, “I don’t know, I just don’t feel like it. Standing around, watching couples dance and make-out all night is not what I call fun”.

“Well then we’ll just hang out and not go to the dance.”

“What about Karin? I’m sure she’s dying to go.”

“She’ll get over it. Look, I miss hanging out with you. Before football and Karin, we did everything together and we had so much fun. Remember when we drove through every neighborhood in the school district and lit everyone’s trash cans on fire?”

Naruto laughed at the memory. He remembered that night very well. They had stayed out until 3 in the morning. Sasuke had been grounded for a month and Naruto got his car taken away. But it had been worth it.

“Yea, that was pretty awesome…but you know Karin will flip if you don’t go and then we really won’t be able to hang out. So just go to the dance tonight and we’ll hang another time. I gotta go; I promised Sakura I’d meet her in the music room after school. I’ll see you later.”

Naruto stepped around Sasuke and walked into the music room. He saw Sakura sitting by the piano and made his way over to her. Putting his bag on the floor, he sat down beside her and started to play her favorite song, Clair De Lune by Debussy. His fingers were soft against the keys as he played the magical song for her and he let himself be swept away by the music. He was almost done with the song when he felt Sakura’s hand on his wrist. He stopped playing and looked over at her.

“What’s wrong?”

Sakura looked at him as if he had committed an evil act against her. The rage coming from her eyes was unbearable and Naruto was beginning to fear for his life when she finally spoke.

“I can’t believe you’re not going to the dance! When were you gonna tell me?!?!”

“Geez, Sakura! You scared the crap out of me; I thought I had done something wrong!!”

“You have! Naruto, please come to the dance, I really want you to be there.”

Naruto looked at Sakura skeptically. Sakura hated school functions almost as much as he did, so why was she pushing for him to go to this one.

“Why?”

“Because…”

“Because why?”

Sakura kept quiet and diverted her eyes from Naruto. Oh yea, she was defiantly up to something.

“Sakura!”

“Oh fine! I want you to go to the dance because Ino and I were gonna perform that song we wrote for you. We thought it would be a good opportunity to tell Sasuke how you really feel. Plus, the whole atmosphere would make it super romantic!”

Naruto shook his head before replying. “Sakura, I’m not gonna tell Sasuke how I feel and what makes you think I would want the whole school to know I love him?”

“Well, we weren’t going to blurt your secret out. We just thought during the song while everyone is preoccupied, you could pull Sasuke off to the side and tell him you love him. See? Romantic, isn’t it?”

“Sakura…I couldn’t handle it if Sasuke pushed me away. It’s bad enough that we barely have time to see each other but if I tell him I love him, there is a really good chance he’ll freak out and hate me. I….I just can’t do it.”

They sat at the piano for a long time without talking until Ino came running into the room, frantic and gasping for breath.

“Naruto! Naruto! Come out here, Sasuke and Suigetsu are having a huge fight!!!!”

Naruto and Sakura bolted out of their seats and ran into the cafeteria to see Sasuke and Suigetsu beating each other to a pulp. Sasuke already had a split lip but Suigetsu’s nose was bleeding all over the place, he was developing a black eye and his cheek and lip were swollen. Naruto ran up to Sasuke just as Juugo, another football player, ran up to Suigetsu and pulled him back. Naruto pulled Sasuke back and tried to hold him but Sasuke was strong and he was fighting hard.

“You asshole! What the fuck is wrong with you?!?! You call me your friend and then I catch you having sex with my girlfriend?!?!”

Suigetsu smirked at Sasuke before replying. “It’s not like she didn’t want it. Didn’t you hear her? She couldn’t get enough of me.”

Sasuke tried to go after him but Naruto continued to hold him back.

“Sasuke, stop! Come on, just let it go!” Naruto said as he pulled Sasuke away. The crowd started to disappear as they realized the fight wasn’t going to pick up again. Naruto dragged Sasuke to the bathroom. He finally let go of Sasuke and walked over to the sink. He got a wet paper towel and moved back over to Sasuke. Attempting, to wipe the blood off his lip, naruto dabbed the cut with the wet paper. Sasuke pulled back a little at first but then let Naruto take care of him. After a couple dabs, the bleeding stopped and Naruto threw the paper towel away. He looked at Sasuke who was looking at the wall.

“I’m sorry….about Karin…”

“It’s ok…I don’t even care anymore…”

They sat in silence for awhile before Sasuke finally looked at Naruto.

“You were right.”

“About what?” Naruto replied, confusion in his voice.

“Karin. She’s not right for me. She never was. I stayed with her for all these years because I didn’t want to admit the truth to myself. I didn’t want anyone to know the truth…”

“What truth?”

Sasuke looked at Naruto, fear in his eyes. Naruto had never seen Sasuke afraid of anything and to see him standing there, fear radiating from his entire body, Naruto began to worry.

“It’s ok Sasuke. You can tell me.”

Sasuke shook his head and turned his eyes away from Naruto to look at the floor.

“You’ll hate me…”

“Look at me Sasuke…..” Sasuke met Naruto’s stare with his own.

“Sasuke, you are my best friend. I couldn’t hate you even if I wanted to. And this scared guy standing in front of me isn’t the Sasuke I know. The Sasuke I know would spill his guts to me and if I said anything he didn’t like, he’d tell me to piss off or call me an idiot. The Sasuke I know isn’t afraid of anything…and he knows I’ll never hate him…no matter what.”

“……I’m gay.”

Naruto’s eyes grew 3 times their normal size and his jaw dropped. He was speechless. Utterly. Completely. Speechless. All these years, he had been freaking out about Sasuke finding out he was gay and that he loved him and now, in the school bathroom, after Sasuke found out his girlfriend was cheating on him, he tells Naruto he’s gay?!?!?

“W-What? WHAT?!?!”

“Calm down you idiot! Someone will hear you.”

“You think you’re gay? You can’t be gay!! You’ve dated girls for years!”

“Yea and did you ever notice something? I never kissed them. Karin was the first girl I kissed and I thought I was gonna vomit. At first I just thought she was a lousy kisser but then one day after practice I walked into the showers and I saw Neji in there with Gaara, your freaky music friend. They were having sex! Neji was leaning over one of the benches and Gaara was pounding into his ass. At first I was freaked out, but then my pants started getting tighter and I realized I was getting turned on. By Neji. And Gaara. Having SEX! I panicked and ran to my car. Once I got home, I took the coldest shower of my life and went to bed. That was 6 months ago. I was so freaked out I didn’t know what to think. I couldn’t tell anyone and I was confused as hell. I continued dating Karin in hopes it was just a crazy onetime thing but I don’t think it was. I think…I’m gay.”

Naruto stood there shocked and slightly turned on. So many times he had imagined Sasuke bending him over one of the benches in the locker room and pounding his ass. He was trying to calm himself down before he got a boner in front of his best friend. But what was a he supposed to say? He had no idea how to respond to all this information. He was so zoned out he didn’t hear Sasuke calling his name. Finally, he felt a punch on his arm and that jolted him out of his daze.

“Ow, What?”

“So? Do you hate me?”

“No! No, I don’t hate you…I’m just…shocked. I never would have pegged you as gay. Its…shocking. So...how do you feel? About this….thing?”

“I feel weird. Confused. But I think I’ll get over it. We still cool?”

Naruto finally came down from his shock and smiled at his best friend.

“Yea, we’re cool.”

Sasuke smiled and hugged Naruto.

“So, you wanna hang out tonight? Obviously I’m not going to the dance so what do you say?”

“Yea, that’d be cool.”

“Great. Hey, I’ll catch up with you later. Got to go make sure Karin knows it’s over.”

Sasuke started to walk towards the door. He stopped and turned around to look at Naruto.

“Thanks for being cool about this. I don’t know what I’d do if you’d freak out. I couldn’t imagine not having you in my life.”

Sasuke turned and continued walking out of the bathroom, leaving Naruto by himself, smiling with pure joy.

Naruto walked out of the bathroom and towards his car. As he turned the car on, he thought about what Sasuke said.

‘Don’t worry Sasuke. I won’t be letting you go anytime soon, you can count on it.’

He picked up his phone and dialed Sakura’s number. He could already imagine how happy she’d be once he told her what he was planning to tell Sasuke tonight.
