Words Unsaid and Not Understood

Naruto stood before the doors to the meeting room, frozen before them. The village needed a new leader, and it seemed that he'd been chosen. The problem was, he wasn't sure he was ready for it quite yet.

(Man, I was getting ready to settle down. After that I would love to finally fulfill my dream. But I guess that's not happening.)

With some effort, he forced himself to open the door and enter. He wa greeted by the village council, who all seemed a bit tense. It was understood that if anything threatened the village, Naruto was more than capable of kicking its ass into next month. But there was another role that came with the position, running the village.

Understandably, there were some members of the council that argued that Naruto was not ready for the responsibility. In the end, they compromised by voting to  have Kakashi instruct Naruto in such matters. There was just one last thing to address. So it was that Naruto was asked a single question after the formalities.

"Naruto, will you accept the title of Hokage and the responsibilities that are inherent to the position?"

(I know it's going to be difficult to adjust to, but I think in time I'll get along fine.)

"Yes, I shall accept the title and position of Hokage." He responded, giving a firm nod.

"There are arrangements to be made then. We'll inform you of the details later. You may leave."

(It's kind of surreal) Naruto thought to himself as he left to wander about. (I've waited for this for more than 5 years. Now that the time as come, it feels like a dream. At the same time, I feel like a dumbass for thinking Sasuke would be there. Why would he be?)

He continued his wander about the village until Hinata approached him. Without so much as a word between them, they began walking together. Naruto began to get the distinct impression that she had something she wanted to talk about. She fidgeted a lot more than he'd ever seen. Eventually, they found a quiet park and sat down.

"How are you Naruto?" Hinata started, sounding awkward and stilted.

"I'm good... They just asked me to be Hokage." Naruto gave a smile, though it didn't feel 100 percent genuine.

"Oh! That's wonderful!" Hinata sounded a lot more like herself. She wasn't the shy girl hoping for her crush anymore. She hadn't been for a while.

"Who would have thought," he asked in jest, "that the demon fox boy would one day rule over the village?"

"Naruto..." Hinata had suddenly shifted gears. Naruto felt that she wanted desperately to say something but was struggling to find the words. She continued. "Remember the Pain invasion?"

"Hm? What about it?"

"Remember how I said that I... I... I loved you?" She replied, oblivious to Naruto's cluelessness.

"Oh... Yeah?" He said, feeling slightly embarrassed.

"I still love you Naruto, and I want to... to..." She teared up, trying desperately to complete her thought but failing as a flower would in a desert. She ran off, her cheeks bright red.

"Wait!" He called out to her. But she had already been lost to the streets.

(She's still pretty shy I guess. What was she going to say I wonder...)

He perused about the many shops and businesses and before long, his stomach growled and bid him to eat some lunch.

(I'm going to be Hokage soon. This calls for some Ichiraku! Though it'd be better if someone else was paying...)

He entered the shop and ordered his usual. As he waited, Sasuke of all people came in. But after catching one glimpse of Naruto, he promptly fled.

(Wonder what that was about. Sasuke never comes here. Unless... He was looking for me?)

"Here you go Naruto. I think that saving the world would get you at least a bowl or two of ramen on the house. Enjoy!"

(Ah yeah! But why would Sasuke be looking for me? Maybe I should enjoy the ramen...)

He did, enjoying the flavour that had kept him a devoted patron to Ichiraku for years. He thanked the owner for his generosity and left. He made his way to the training field to take his mind off his troubles for at least a little bit. As he trained, he couldn't help but notice a pink-haired ninja off in the distance.

(I'll have to talk to Sakura eventually. I wonder how she'll react. I don't think she'd be too upset by it. After all, she's still probably interested in Sasuke.)

He cheered up at the thought and resumed his training. Night fell and he returned to his home. After a simple dinner, he turned in, exhausted from his afternoon training. He threw himself into his bed and sleep came easily. He was not troubled, he was at peace. For the moment, he was content.
