Gai's guide to getting in shape 1

By the time the sun rose Gai, having been up for quite some time already, nudged Yukio. "Good Morning! It's a wonderful new day," He greeted the poor boy with an energetic voice and bright smile. "Once you are dressed we can get some breakfast and then we can start the assessment for your training."

The poor boy was not, in fact, a morning person. He just pulled the blankets over his head at Gai's cheerful voice and was about to go back to sleep entirely when he remembered that the object of his affections was going to be with them today. He was sitting up in bed like a shot, eyes darting around the room for any sign of Kakashi. Unfortunately for him, the silver-haired Jounin was... still asleep.

Satisfied that Yukio was up Gai moved into the kitchen. "Do you want something to drink? I'm making some tea but I have juice as well." He continued cheerfully, starting to make his own meagre breakfast.

"I'll have whatever you think is best for the training." Yukio said with a sigh. "... Is your bathroom still out of order, or can I use it?"

"Sure, go ahead." Gai nodded at the door to his bedroom while waiting for his bread to finish toasting. Although he was used to being up this early it always took a cup of strong tea to get his brain as awake as his body.

Yukio stood, grabbing his bag with toothbrush and hair brush and such and headed to the bathroom, having to cross through Gai's own room to do so.

If Gai had been more awake, he might have realized this might not have been such a good thing to allow. Kakashi rested on his stomach on Gai's bed, face turned away from the doorway and hidden against the pillow in an attempt to shut out the light. He was wakened by the presence entering the room, of course, but he hoped it would be nothing he had to move for and did his best to get just five more minutes of sleep.

Looking undecided between the bathroom and the bed back and forth Yukio chewed on his bottom lip. Setting his bag down next to the bathroom door he slowly moved towards the 'sleeping' form of Kakashi. "Kakashi-san?" he whispered hoping that the other man wouldn't wake up should be he fully asleep.

Kakashi closed his eyes tighter. 'Go away.' he thought at the boy, 'GO AWAY.'

He had hoped he would spontaneously develop psychic powers and that the boy would listen and leave him to sleep for another five minutes. He didn't want to get up yet.

Reaching out tentatively the boy's hand was inches away from Kakashi's skin when Gai's head popped in through the door. "Breakfast will be ready in a few minutes. You might want to get a move on." Disapproval of Yukio taking his liberties quite THAT far easy to hear in the older man's voice.

Yukio didn't need to be told twice when he was caught. He pulled his hand back in an instant and fled into the bathroom.

Under the covers, Kakashi gripped a kunai tightly. Good thing Gai had interrupted. The daimyo wouldn't be happy with his son loosing a hand, Kakashi thought.

By the time Yukio had exited the bathroom, Kakashi had already gotten up and dressed, and was heading to the living room to swipe some toast.

Unwilling to let this destroy his early morning cheer Gai dished out what sparse breakfast he had managed to produce. "I think we'll start with some basic muscle strength testing and then move on to stamina, have a break and then have a look at your speed Yukio-kun. " He explained in between bites of dry toast, never mind that Kakashi had brought several different kinds of jams and marmalade, honey and margarine meant to be consumed WITH the toasted bread.

Kakashi rolled his eyes at Gai's bland toast, piling his with several different kinds of jellies before making it do a disappearing act without seeming to move his mask at all. "Uh huh. I have to get some morning business done, so how about I just meet up with you in a half hour or so? What training ground will you be at?"

"The usual one. I might as well introduce my cute students to Yukio-kun. I'm sure they'll be happy to meet you. "Gai smiled at the young man in question. "If you miss us there try the lake. I think we'll be there until midday. You did bring a pair of trunks, right?" Finishing his toast he picked up his plate and dropped it in the sink. " Just leave your dishes. We can do them later." And with those words he disappeared again into his bedroom, most likely getting the rest of his gear and his Jounin vest.

Yukio nodded to Gai's question of a pair of trunks. As Gai left, he turned to speak with Kakashi but was surprised to find the other ninja had simply... vanished. Dejected for the morning, but still determined, Yukio got ready for the day ahead.

Once they had reached the trainings ground Gai was somewhat disappointed to find that none of his precious students was there yet. Comforting himself with the knowledge that both Neji and Lee were most likely still at least partially recovering he set Yukio to punching at one of the straw dummies usually used for Tenten's weapons training, but figured that the boy was unlikely to be able to work at a tree stump like Lee and himself.

Soon enough, there was a blur on the horizon that signalled one of his students approaching. Strangely, it was not green but... pink?

Tenten came to a halt in front of Gai, not winded in the least despite her speed. "Good morning, Gai-sensei!" she said cheerfully, though she had the look of someone who had something they wanted to ask. Before she could, however, she noticed the other person with him. "...Who's this?" she asked, casting a glance at Yukio. "Someone from Gennin academy? Gonna be taking on new students now?"

"AH! Tenten!" Gai beamed happily at his student. "It's good to see you so eager to get your training started. But for your question this is Yukio-kun. He's my mission for the next two weeks. " He explained with great enthusiasm waving at Yukio to stop his training for a moment and meet Tenten. "Yukio this one of my students, Tenten. Maybe she can give you a few tips for your training."

Tenten nodded her head briefly in Yukio's direction. "Pleased to meet ya'." she said, without any of the propriety of a lady in the courts, before turning back to Gai. "Um, sensei, though, if you have a moment I wanted to ask... I need advice, and I can't ask my dad..."

Nodding Gai shooed Yukio back to the dummy after the boy had greeted Tenten with a simple nod (after all she didn't seem to be in any way connected to either of his goals so didn't need to be treated as anything then the peasant girl she was). Wrapping a friendly arm around Tenten's shoulders Gai lead her a bit further away from the main trainings area. "What is it Tenten. You know you can always talk to me, what ever it is:" He encouraged her, somehow feeling reminded of her mother when she had been Tenten's age.

Tenten's face went slightly red and her voice dropped in tone to keep things quiet. "Well, sensei, recently there's been... um... well, I have... Sensei, how do you know if you, you know, like someone?"

Gai's face displayed a vacant smile as Tenten's words finally fully registered. 'Like somebody?' Was the springtime of Tenten's life already THIS advanced? Well since Lee had taken to loudly proclaiming his devotion to a certain kunoichi it really shouldn't be as much of a surprise as it was to the green clad sensei. Still let it not be said that Maito Gai was one to leave his students questions unanswered. "How youthful of you Tenten!" He proclaimed with a teary smile. "You are growing up so fast." Throwing his other arm around her he hugged her to his chest.

Tenten let out a surprised yelp as she was pulled into one of Gai's crushing hugs. "S-sensei!" she exclaimed, her blush only deepening at Gai's reaction to her question. "I-I don't KNOW if I do, I...!"

Letting go of her again Gai smiled one of his special youthful smiles. "But you are starting to wonder about these things. I would say that is a good indication that you think you might have somebody you LIKE like that, or am I wrong?"

Well, Gai's logic really couldn't be argued with. And for once, that wasn't because it wasn't actually logic. Still, Tenten shifted restlessly where she stood. "But, even so, how do I know if, well, he likes me back?"

Gai's face fell a bit at that question but still exuded his usual enthusiasm. "You ask him of course!" he declared with a great gesture completely ignoring the fact that Tenten most likely did not want the rest of Konoha to know about this development.

Tenten flinched at Gai's tone, but looked horrified at the idea of asking him! "I can't do that!" She said, certain. "What if the answer is no?! I... I really like the friendship we have right now, if he knows I like him like that, it could be ruined! He doesn't like girls that much anyway, I'm pretty much the only one he hangs out with that wasn't on his genin team, if I get all mushy and girly on him...!" Tenten looked horrified.

Puzzled Gai raised an eybrow. "Why should you do that? And I am sure that any young man would be delighted to know that you appreciate him that much." He patted her shoulder. " Without risking something you wont gain anything." And who knew sometimes the most far fetched dreams came true.

Tenten shifted from foot to foot again, eyes darting around as if she was scared that the young man in question was listening in some how. "Isn't there any way I can, I don't know... get a good idea of it? So I know how good my chance is?"

"Well you said that you are the only girl he 'hangs out' with .So I would say your chances are pretty good. But the best and only way to be sure is to ask tell him I'm afraid. May I ask who this young man is?" Curios Gai eyed Tenten. He doubted that she was talking about Lee or Neji although the description she had given would have fit the later.

Tenten looked at Gai suspiciously. "...You promise you won't tell? And you won't go banging down his door demanding that he treat me right or anything?"

Looking vaguely guilty for that idea HAD crossed his mind Gai nodded. "I promise."

Still clearly not sure if she should tell Gai, Tenten gave the area another quick look around to make absolutely sure that the princeling was the only one around within remote hearing range. Even so, she dropped her voice to the quietest whisper again before she spoke.

"...Nara Shikamaru."

At this Gai blinked, not having expected this answer. The Nara boy? He hadn't even be aware that Tenten was spending time with Shikamaru. But then the young man was the only one to actually pass the Chuunin exams (not that Asuma had bragged for weeks afterwards about that) so there certainly was potential. Following Tenten's example he lowered his voice as well. "And when did you start liking him like this?"

"I don't really know." Tenten said, sounding as frustrated as a boy would be instead of shy or embarrassed like a proper young girl. "I ran into him when I was doing some solo training and we just got to talking, at first it was funny to poke fun at him because he's so damn lazy, but... he was really interesting to talk to and spend time with. It's like we're either total opposites or exactly the same in everything, you know?" she sighed at this point, kicking up some dirt into a little dust cloud as she tried to recall when things began to get suspicious for her. "Anyway, we hung out more and more, and I... I don't know. A few days ago I started to realize how much I was looking forward to the time I spent with him."

“Ah." Gai nodded, feeling somehow reminded of his experience with Kakashi... of course they had been having an awful lot of sex even before that point and he hoped that Tenten had not followed her sensei's example...(not that she knew about it, but still.) "Well Tenten. As you already guessed that's a very good indication that you like him and from what I know about Shikamaru it seems to me that like he spends quite a lot of time and energy with you, so I would say your friendship means something to him as well. Therefore even if he doesn’t not like you like that I doubt you have to worry about losing that." For a moment he remembered the first time he and Kakashi had been intimate and how he had been willing to forget the whole thing to retain their rivalry/friendship.

Tenten smiled at Gai. Not with her usual confidence, but at least with hope.

"Thanks, Gai-sensei. I... I hope so."

Resting his hand on her shoulder Gai gave her a comforting squeeze. "I'm sure. He would be a fool otherwise." Smiling in reassurance he winked at her. "And as lazy as the Nara's may be, they are no fools." Turning back to Yukio he gave the young girl a push in his direction. "But enough of this youthful talk. No reason to neglect your training!"

Tenten only stumbled for half a moment before she caught herself. "Fiiine, fine, work me to the bone when I'm supposed to be enjoying the 'springtime of my youth', why don't you!" she teased, but went over to see what Yukio was currently doing and how she could help out, anyway.

Yukio meanwhile had been busy punching the dummy the way Gai had showed him how. However aside from a few measly dents there really wasn't much to see for his efforts and the poor boy was growing quickly frustrated. Punching straw dummies was something he could have done at home and he really couldn't see how this was supposed to tell Gai how strong he was, especially when his rival didn't even watch him but whisper with that girl that was apparently playing at ninja.

Moving up silently beside him - entirely unintentional, any ninja would detect her presence and she was used to being around ninja - Tenten watched Yukio for a while before asking, brightly, "So, how many more have ya got?"

Yelping in surprise Yukio jumped a good meter as Tenten spoke. Wide eyed he turned towards her. "Do you always sneak up on people like that?!" he grumbled somewhat annoyed not only by the fact that the young girl had managed to startle him and his knuckles had started hurting but also that there was no sign of Kakashi yet.

Tenten boggled for a moment at him. Sneak up on him-? "Oh, right! Sorry, I'm not used to dealing with civilians all that much!" she laughed, rubbing the back of her head. "That was being noisy, for a ninja! ... unless you're Uzumaki Naruto, but that's beside the point."

Sighing Yukio threw a glance at Gai but apparently the other man did not consider his workout with the dummy done. "What can I do for you?" He turned back to Tenten and threw her a somewhat strained but polite (at court) smile.

'Wow, this guy is kind of weird' Tenten thought, but again, she had little contact with people outside of Konoha, and then only for other ninja countries, unless specifically on a mission.

"Well, Gai-sensei told me to help you out with your training! So, until Gai-sensei says otherwise, I guess, Tenten of Team 7, at your service!" she nodded her head again, cheerfully.

Raising an eyebrow Yukio sceptically took her in. "...Right:" Deciding not to say anything he turned back to the dummy and readied himself for another round. Now if only it hadn't looked as if the dummy was winning he might have been able to bring up some enthusiasm.

Tenten watched him for a moment before commenting. "...Um, Yukio-kun" Tenten said, addressing him the same way Gai had, despite the age difference. "You're doing it wrong. Here, let me show you..."

Biting back a frustrated comment Yukio lowered his fists again. "And how am I supposed to do it then?" he asked, less the courteous but not really caring.

Tenten raised an eyebrow. She trained with her brothers and Neji enough to know that tone when she heard it. Still, she was determined to remain patient. "You're holding your wrist wrong, you need to line up like this." she said, demonstrating it, though going significantly slower than needed so Yukio could see, and only giving the dummy a light tap as an example.

Following Tenten's example Yukio changed the way he was holding his wrist and smacked the dummy with as lot more force then she had. It didn't change the fact that his knuckles felt like they would split soon but at least he was no longer trying to sprain his own wrist which was always a plus in his book. "Thank you:" He acknowledged her help.

Gai meanwhile was leaning against a tree and was watching the two of them attentively, still marvelling at Tenten's sudden development towards becoming a young woman.

Tenten beamed, happily. "No problem! Unarmed taijutsu is my weakest area, but every little bit helps, right?" satisfied that Yukio was at least doing that right, she began her stretching before training.

Taking the hit to his ego with a disgruntled sigh Yukio continued to pummel the dummy.

Finally after observing them for a few more minutes Gai called a stop to it. "Tenten, Yukio. I want you to run a few laps around the training ground. Tenten I want you to keep pace with Yukio."

Tenten cast a disappointed glance at Yukio before she could stop herself. "Fiiine, sensei." she said, finishing off her stretches.

Although he knew better Yukio couldn't keep his mouth closed at her reaction. "I don't need her to slow down for me. i can keep up." He puffed out his chest in wounded manly pride. Having a little girl being told to keep her speed down for him was certainly NOT the way to go to impress Kakashi-san.

Tenten actually snickered at that. "...Sure you can." she said, unable to hold back how much she was humouring him. She was just too used to speaking with Lee, who occasionally needed people to bring him down to keep him from going too high and hurting himself doing something stupid (even then, he still continued to do stupid things and hurt himself. Often.). "I'll be okay, it'll be good self-control training."

"I. do. not. need. you to slow down for me." Yukio snapped now even more insulted. Never before had a little peasant girl dared to show so much cheek towards him. At the same time Gai signalled for Tenten to just leave it be, it wasn't worth getting in a fight about this.

Tenten firmly bit the inside of her cheek to keep from commenting, and only because Gai signalled her to. She waited for the go-ahead from Gai before taking off, and then DID slow down to keep whatever pace Yukio set.

At first Yukio didn't do too badly but soon he had to slow down, the workout he had had with the dummy taking its toll. Still he grit his teeth and pushed onwards unwilling to admit defeat . He was going to do whatever it took to reach his goal even if he felt like he was going to cough out a lung any second.

Once the two kids had left Gai looked around hoping that Kakashi would join them soon, it was bound to lift Yukio's spirits and he was hoping to talk to him about the almost incident with the kunai this morning.

Soon after the two had left sight, in fact, Kakashi came strolling up. It was a little too conveniently timed.

Raising an eyebrow Gai silently watched the other man approach from his spot against the tree. Somehow he wasn't surprised that Kakashi had waited until Yukio had left before showing himself....of course that had NOTHING to do with why he had sent them of on their run.
