Gai's guide to getting in shape 2
Kakashi held up a hand in greeting to Gai. "Yo. How's the morning gone so far?" he asked, casually, pretending that he had not in fact been watching the last ten minutes from the shadows.
"Not too bad. I was wondering when you would show up." Although he was attempting a stern attitude Gai couldn't keep a small smile from his lips as he took in Kakashi.
"Yeah, I was watching a little." Kakashi admitted without any hint of shame. "...By the way, a bright shiny 5-yen piece says Tenten punches him in the face by the time they make it through two laps."
"I'd rather hope she doesn't" Gai sighed shifting against the tree into a more comfortable position. "What is it with you and hiding in the shadows from that kid? Don't tell me you are scared of one little spoiled boy "
Kakashi snorted. "Scared? no. ... Too lazy to deal with? Oh yes."
In the distance Yukio and Tenten could be seen approaching the end of their first round. Already Yukio was breathing heavier but he was keeping a good speed for a civilian, proving that there was indeed potential for improvement with proper training. Looking towards them Gai sighed. " So what were you planning on doing this morning then?"
Kakashi slowly shifted his gaze back to Gai.
"...Ara? What do you mean?" he asked, cheerfully unassuming.
"Really, my rival. I think you know quite well what I mean, but just in case you don't I'll refresh your memory. This morning, you seemed ready to kill Yukio..." Propping a hand against his hip Gai stared levelly at Kakashi.
"Did I? I must have still been partially asleep and reacting without thinking." Kakashi said, pleasantly.
Looking at Kakashi for a long moment Gai finally pushed of the tree and stepped towards the other ANBU. "If you say so." he agreed with a small smile. "But next time kunai are banned from bed."
Kakashi closed the distance between them, leaning in very close for this being such a public area. "Saaaa, you don't think the kunai are a little exciting?"
Licking his lips Gai's smiled turned darker. "I don‘t know, but I'm sure I could be convinced with a demonstration..." he hissed in Kakashi's ear after leaning in the last few inches.
Kakashi's lazy expression didn't waver as he reached forward to run a hand down the exposed jumpsuit between the opened Jounin vest, though his gaze had gone hot. "...Aaah, right now? There are children present."
Forced back into the reality of their situation Gai sighed as he captured Kakashi's straying hand. "Well maybe not now..." he squeezed the thing fingers held in his hand in a silent promise that they WOULD get back to this.
"My place, tonight. Sneak out after the kid goes to bed." Kakashi whispered just before Tenten and Yukio began to jog by. Tenten was looking terribly bored, but she blushed when she saw Kakashi was there. Clearly, she hadn't forgotten about the incident at Gai's.
"H-hey, Kakashi-san!" she waved.
"Kakashi-san!" Yukio brightened visibly form where he had been almost dragging his exhausted body along and apparently got his second wind, speeding up to catch up to Tenten, who was already running at a much slower pace then usual.
Gai sucked in a breath in anticipation his whole body tingling at the thoughts of what just Kakashi might be planning. Nodding to his eternal rival he faced Yukio and Tenten as well. "One more round as fast as possible then we head on to the lake." He called over to them.
"As fast as possible for ME?" Tenten asked, just to be sure, though her anticipation was not hidden in the least. She was practically WALKING before that other student got his second wind.
And Kakashi? He just smirked behind his mask.
Nodding to Tenten Gai added. "Just go as fast as you can Yukio." Obviously Tenten would leave the poor boy far behind but he couldn't just let his poor student have no fun.
Yukio himself scowled mentally. He was sure that Gai was doing this on purpose to make him look bad in front of Kakashi-san....Swearing to himself not to make a fool of himself before his adored god of beauty he tucked his chin against his chest and ran as fast as he could.
Tenten actually stopped. If she was going to run, she was going to run properly. Crouching low, she got into a starting position, took a breath, then was off like a shot. She was not nearly as fast as Lee could be, but it was still leaps and bounds beyond what the prince could do.
Having expected this Yukio never the less did his best not to come in behind her by too big a margin, Gai's words from their first meeting ringing in his ears. 'As long as you keep on trying with all your heart you will surely make your dreams real' With all the discouraging obstacles that were strewn across his path, especially Kakashi's continuous rejection of his affection, these words kept him going.
Kakashi sighed. It was really... too pathetic, in a way. Finding pity affecting him, he decided to throw Yukio a bone.
"...That's really good, Yukio." He called out to the boy.
That wasn't just a bone for the affection starved young man. It was a whole dinosaur. The way Yukio was beaming he almost rivalled the sun as he finally reached the finishing line, his feet feeling as if they were made of iron and his legs screaming in pain ,but nothing managed to pierce the euphoric haze Kakashi's words had caused.
Groaning silently Gai shook his head. Although he didn't want Kakashi to stamp the young man's self-confidence into the dust seeing him react like that to a compliment didn't feel quite right either.
Kakashi decided to not comment further. Let the boy read into that what he would. He gave Gai a questioning look, as if asking what he thought of that reaction as well. Tenten, meanwhile, was practically bouncing in place.
"Sensei, do you want me to stick around for training all day? I ... um, I was hoping to go visit-" she paused, a blush returned to her face. "Um, you know."
Gai shook his head at both Kakashi and Tenten. "No you can go Tenten. Thank you for giving Yukio-kun a hand." The boy in question mean while was gasping for air as if breathing was going out of style. "We are headed to the lake. You can join us anytime, the same goes for Lee and Neji should you meet them. And I wish you good luck:" He added with a conspiratorial wink.
Tenten blushed harder, but continued to smile all the same. "Thanks, Gai-sensei." She was feeling in such a good mood, she even gave Yukio a light thump on the back. "Good luck with your training, I'll try to help whenever I can, yeah?"
Stumbling forward at the unexpected thump Yukio gave Tenten a weak smile in return. " Thanks I guess," he muttered, unsure of that would be a good thing or not.
And with that, Tenten was off for the day. Or at least for a few hours.
Kakashi stretched, then let out a yawn. "Saa, we going to the lake now?" he asked.
"Aa." Gai nodded thumping Yukio on the back as well. "You did quite well back there Yukio-kun. Now get your bag and we'll head to the lake. You can have a quick break before we start the assessment there." At the mention of the lake a quick look of quiet longing stole over Gai's features. The lake had always been one of his favourite training areas and his current inability left him feeling despondent.
Kakashi cast Gai a sympathetic glance. "...We'll come back here, too, when you're feeling better, okay?"
Startled Gai looked over to Kakashi. In his rare moment of self pity he had completely forgotten about his companions. With an embarrassed laugh he nodded. "I'll have to train extra hard to make up for all the time I missed...After all I wont lose to you my rival.!" He flashed Kakashi a bright smile and his famed thumbs up. Nice guy pose...complete.
Just then they stepped out of the forest and were right at the shore of Konoha's lake. Decently sized it was part of the same water ways that ran though Konoha and was regularly used for training purposes.
The rest of the day was busy, spent in large parts watching Yukio do his laps in the lake until he almost drowned then a quick lunch before yet more tests for the young prince. Over all Yukio didn’t do too badly but it was clear that he was still a long way away from the level of a normal shinobi, not to mention his self proclaimed goal of defeating Gai.
By the end of the day the young man was barely able to walk back home and Gai had to support him once they reached his apartment building. Shuffling the exhausted boy into his flat Gai wished Kakashi briefly a good night before putting his, already half asleep, ward to bed.
"Not too bad. I was wondering when you would show up." Although he was attempting a stern attitude Gai couldn't keep a small smile from his lips as he took in Kakashi.
