Nearly a year had passed, wounds had fully healed, and once more he was strong. Naruto slipped from the bed silent as ever, his lover still deep in slumber. He donned a simple white yukata wrapped around his tan form and wooden geta sandals. He took to the back door listening carefully to make sure none of his movements had awoken Gaara. Only the slightest shift of the covers before the redhead settled. Naruto let out a slow breath, the last thing he needed was to be followed. He slipped from the back door and faced the foliage and trees.
The Hokage’s suites were framed at one side by the Konoha woods and Naruto quietly treaded an invisible path making his chakra signature undetectable just incase Gaara had woken up. It only took a little time before he entered a small clearing. The early morning light filtered through the trees in washes of gold and green. A small wooden half enclosed space stood at the far end of the clearing. Naruto stepped out of his geta sandals and moved into the middle of the clearing. Nearing the elegantly crafted lean to. His eyes wandered over a familiar headband, to a small picture and an incense burner. Then they landed on the name engraved upon a slick granite surface. He kneeled in front of the shrine and bowed respectively.
“Hello Sasuke.” He whispered softly.

Gaara stirred in the bed. A slight breeze had seeped into the blankets meaning Naruto was no longer in the bed. The redhead slid his eyes open, the empty spot next to him confirming his theory. Stretching under the blankets he sat up, his body tuned to Naruto’s chakra. He was not in the house. Or even in the vicinity of the house. Gaara twitched his eyes downward in confusion, he knew Naruto had nothing planned today. Gaara had made sure of that. Getting up out of the bed the Sabuku pulled on a simple pair of black pants and a dark yukata, leaving the gourd in the corner of the room. He noted the earliness. Naruto had never liked to rise early, and usually planned things to accommodate that. Moving to the door Gaara opened it meeting the sites of the village awakening below their home. A set of training fields were out to their home’s left and Gaara briefly scrutinized them. Only a green blur making its way from one end of the field to another in a series of flourished movements could be seen, Lee was up early today. Gaara disappeared in a whirl of sand. Perhaps Naruto had taken some time to be at the memorial stone.
Landing on the outskirts of the field where the stone was. Gaara spotted the large black almost obelisk shaped memorial and a certain Nara Shikamaru staring blissfully at the early morning sky in front of it. He walked closer quietly knowing the brunette was possibly asleep.
“Naruto’s not here.” Shikamaru drawled his eyes lazily sliding from the sky to Gaara watching him. Gaara glanced at the stone,
“Do you know where he could be?” Gaara asked slowly. Shikamaru shrugged and leaned up on his elbows his eyes fully on the redhead.
“Usually if he doesn’t want to be found, he tends to stay that way.”
Gaara’s eyes wandered over the stone considering the words. They were true, Naruto had come to take much time to his own as of late. He narrowed his eyes, not knowing if it was still side effects from what the Hokage had gone through with the…Uchiha. Or if was just that he was growing a bit older.
“Neji should be coming soon…” Shikamaru offered before lying down. Gaara turned his aqua eyes on the Nara clan member.
“No, that will not be needed, Enjoy you’re day” Gaara said before disappearing once more. Shikamaru sighed softly, closing his eyes feeling the breeze shift around him. Moments passed and a certain familiar presence sat behind him. He let a small smile flit across his mouth.
“Neji.” He said in a slow drawl. Hands landed on his shoulders picking him up slightly. Opening his eyes Shikamaru could see the man smirking down at him.
“Shikamaru.” Came the counter. Shikamaru’s smile grew and the silence fell between them, both enjoying the play of the calm breeze.

It was nearing the middle of the morning and Gaara still hadn’t found his lover, he had stopped at several of the spots Naruto could have spent his time alone, and many of the times Naruto went such as the orphanage or academy. No one had seen the Hokage. Gaara was getting worried. He had never had Naruto leave his side this long without knowing at least where he was. He stopped at the hospital doors and pushed them open; it wasn’t long before he spotted a certain pink hair kunoichi. She was moving from patient room to patient room. He waited until she spotted him.
“Gaara?” She asked slightly surprised. Gaara nodded in greeting,
“Naruto has been missing all morning, have you seen him?” he asked quietly. He watched the eyes widen slightly,
“How long has he been missing?” She asked tentatively.
“Dawn” Replied the redhead. He could see the slightest of fidgets her body created and the eyes looked down.
“He’ll come back before midday I’m sure.” She said softly, her hands clutching the clipboard in her hand.
“Where is he?” Gaara’s voice had gone low. She was hiding something from him, about Naruto. Something akin to fear twisted up through his body. Naruto wasn’t telling him something. Naruto was keeping something from him. Sakura looked up at him,
“I don’t have the privilege to tell you.” She said finally, “….But he only seeks the company of the silence when he’s like this.”
Gaara watched as she turned around hurriedly, her head bowed. Gaara felt the fear grip him a bit more tightly, a sudden anger burning with the fear. Perhaps Naruto’s heart had never left…him. His chakra flashed around him and he was gone intent on finding Naruto.
Sakura took in a deep breath feeling the immense chakra ripple through her. She was the only one who Naruto had confided in about the small shrine he had created. She knew it was something Naruto needed, somewhere he could go. But she also knew the wrong intention that could be taken with creating such a space for one who wanted to destroy so many lives. She hoped for when Gaara did find him, because she was more then certain he would, that he would not judge Naruto.

The former Kazekage found himself at the shared house once more after looking in every place he could. His worry, fear and anger had only grown during the time and he looked to the back door, noticing it was open to the forest at the back of the suite. His eyes narrowed. That door had been closed, had it not when he left? He slipped from the house to greet the forest. There was the barest hint of Naruto chakra, how he hadn’t felt earlier confused him. He disappeared into the trees following the trail.

Naruto had his hands behind his head his eyes staring at the sky. It was nearing midday. If Gaara was awake he was certain to find him.
“Well…it seems there’s nothing else to tell you….Kiba’s dating Kankuro...though...I don’t think you were very found of Kiba, Didn’t Akamaru pee on you once?” Naruto sat up his eyes on the photo behind the glass and grinned slightly. The smile faded slowly from his face at the feeling of a certain chakra presence. He swallowed slightly. He had stayed too long.
“You know Gaara, I can take care myself, I don’t need to be followed everywhere.” Naruto spoke, his head turning towards the forest at his left where the redhead emerged. His eyes were practically unreadable for Naruto.
“You hold a shrine for him. Why?” Came the harsh question. Naruto winced slightly he knew this shouldn’t have been kept a secret, but he also knew Gaara had a way of over reacting, and over protecting.
“He deserved a place on the memorial stones long ago—”
“He tried to KILL you.” Gaara cut him off, his chakra flickering in his rage. Naruto stepped towards the small shrine he had created and picked up the picture,
“So did you.” He whispered as his thumb rubbed over the glass, there was a sudden silence from his lover and Naruto placed the picture back in its place turning to Gaara.
“We were lovers, I loved him with everything I had.” He started, “I hold this shrine for the man he was before. He made me stronger, he was the reason I fought so hard, and so long when I was growing up.” Gaara’s eyes were hard, but Naruto could see the hurt behind them.
“Gaara…you have to understand….I have so many memories, good memories, and now that’s gone.” He tried to explain,
“So, am I just his replacement. Is that all I've been to you?” Gaara snarled taking one step back.
“You came when I had lost myself in sorrow and doubt. Gaara please….” Naruto moved closer, he couldn’t lose Gaara.
“I need you….” His hand land on the shoulder and the body stiffened, the green eyes still blazing, Naruto pressed in, feeling it safe since Gaara hadn’t at least lashed out at him. He trailed a tan hand down the pale cheek forcing his lover to make eye contact,
“I love you…and nothing is going to change that.” He waited, swallowing the lump that had formed at the back of his throat. The eyes softened slightly. Naruto tightened his grip on the redhead burying his face against his lover neck,
“I can’t lose you Gaara…” He whispered. The redhead felt the last of anger slip away and he relaxed, one hand running up Naruto’s back hesitantly but soothingly.
“I’m…not going anywhere.” He said finally in a soft murmur. The sun was high above them, indicating that midday had arrived, but neither moved from the shadow spotted clearing. Gaara’s eyes landed on the small shrine, the picture of Sasuke who sported a rather care free smile on his face. The former Kazekage gave the shrine a respectful nod. He felt Naruto shift against him and the bright eyes were staring into his once more. Gaara tilted his head slightly and pressed his lips to the other for soft kiss. Sasuke had ruined his own chance, and Gaara had the rest of his life with Naruto. He deepened the kiss pulling Naruto back against him.
He loved Naruto more then anything, and nothing would ever change that.
