Two weeks had passed since Naruto had returned to Konoha, and Sasuke was beginning to wonder if he’d ever wake up. Kabuto had run every test known to medicine with no results. The one theory he could come up with, and it was crap in Sasuke’s opinion, was that the coma was self induced due to psychological stress.
“So what does that mean exactly?” Sasuke couldn’t hide the note of exhaustion in his voice; the last two weeks had been hell. Between Naruto being an inconsiderate ass and sleeping all day, Sakura’s constant badgering, and Iruka’s constant hovering, Sasuke was a step to the left of going insane.
“It means that his mind is trying to protect itself from the reality of what happened to his body.”
“Being raped, you mean.” He didn’t even bother to hide his emotions this time, the rage was evident in every portion of his being, and when he caught up with those basterds who had DARED to lay hands on HIS Naruto-
“Yes, and I don’t think he’ll wake until he comes to terms with it, at least to a degree. I have to warn you however, if this IS the case, that if he doesn’t wake up soon, there’s a chance that permanent brain damage will occur and then he won't be ABLE to wake up.”
Sasuke felt the anger bleed out of him and the familiar weight of despair settle firmly in his gut. Naruto was running, from himself, from his memories, from Sasuke, it didn’t matter really, but Sasuke knew in his heart that something had to give.
“Isn’t there something you can do? I found him, I mean god...I finally fucking FOUND him, I can’t loose him now- I just CAN’T. Please...there’s got to be something we can do.”
“Talk to him-“
“Bullshit! I’ve been talking to him for two fucking weeks! There has to be something else...”
“Sasuke, I don’t mean Konoha’s daily weather report. TALK TO HIM, give him a reason to come back, convince him that waking is the only option.”
Sasuke stood; he was tired of talking, he was never the most talkative person in the first place, but, what the hell. At least it was something. He started for the door before stopping almost as an afterthought-
“That was all you wanted to tell me, Right?”
-before continuing out, not even waiting for Kabuto’s reply.
Kabuto sighed and shook his head; Sasuke would forever and always be Sasuke, predictable to a fault sometimes, as unpredictable as Naruto at others. Lucky for Kabuto, it was the former he was demonstrating today. A few moments longer and he would’ve seen right through the genjutsu cloaking the figure in the corner, and then he would have had A LOT of explaining to do.
“You didn’t tell him about Naruto’s DNA.”
Kabuto turned his attention to said figure, who was emerging from the genjutsu to sit in the chair Sasuke had just occupied.
“Is that surprising? You were the one who told me not to say anything.”
“Yes, but you rarely take my advice.”
“That’s because your advice is usually shit. This time though, you had a good point. The abnormalities were most likely due to the presence of the Nine Tails. His DNA doesn’t seem to be breaking down at all, so there’s little reason to worry. Telling Sasuke, well, lets just say he’s wound tight enough already.”
“Do you think he’ll wake any time soon?”
“I think,” Kabuto said, “that is entirely up to Sasuke.”
“I should go...”
“He forgave you, you know, when he learned the truth. Even tried to find you for a while. Then Naruto disappeared...”
“Kabuto...you and I both know that now is neither the time nor the place.”
“Itachi...”
“I’m going to keep digging, something still doesn’t feel right about all this.”
And then he was gone...damn it Itachi...

Sasuke didn’t think he’d ever get used to the sight of Naruto in a hospital bed, so quiet and still. The Naruto he remembered was never still, he was a constant source of sound and movement, even while he slept. So the sight of him, the motionless center of a cocoon of wires and tubes, was surreal and...unnatural somehow.
With a heavy sigh, Sasuke took his usual seat to continue his daily vigil, reaching forward to take one slack hand in his.
“Well, you always said I was too quiet. I hope your happy now, Dobe.” The softly spoken insult slipped from his mouth almost without notice. He brought Naruto’s hand to his face breathing his scent and nuzzling it to his cheek.
“Kabuto said that I should talk to you, and give you a reason to wake up. There’s so many things I want to tell you Dobe, so many things you missed. But then I guess I missed a lot of things too.” He stopped, breathing heavily, trying to hold back the surge of emotion that he new was coming. “You see, I wasn’t around much eather. I was...I was looking...” a single tear slid down his face, and just like that, the damn broke, and everything he’d been bottling up for the past two weeks, no, the past four years, hit him like a physical force.
“Where WERE you, Naruto? I looked every where I could think of, I kept searching for FOUR YEARS. That day, when you were just GONE...when everyone thought you were just joking around, I knew then that something was wrong. And I knew that I had to find you somehow, because I just couldn’t live without you.” He was sobbing openly now, but he couldn’t bring himself to care.
“I know you’re in there, Naruto, and I know you can hear me. I miss you. I miss you so much it hurts; I miss your smile, your voice, and your pranks. I even miss the way you eat ramen. So please, Naruto...please...come back to me...please...” He fell forward, crossing his arms on the bed and pressing his face to the sheltered, dark hollow they made. Hiding from the world as he cried quietly, eventually falling asleep to the sound of his own breathing and the soft steady beep of the heart monitor. And as he was drifting, not quite awake, but not quite in true sleep ether, he imagined a hand, softly stroking his hair, and a familiar voice telling him that every thing would be fine.
*****************************************************************************************
Kakashi made his way to Naruto’s hospital room. He had barely managed to convince Iruka to go to work today, instead of coming to the Hospital with him. He knew Lee had done the same with Sakura, so that they could give Sasuke a brief respite from the hovering he had endured for the past two weeks. He wouldn’t have bothered, except he had a feeling that his lover’s overprotective tendencies were starting to irk the other ninja, almost to the point of violence.
He entered the room and stopped, his eye widening slightly, before crinkling into a soft smile. The sight of Sasuke, passed out at his friend’s bedside, though endearing, was not that unusual. The sight of Naruto sitting up and gently running his hands through Sasuke’s dark hair, however, was entirely unexpected.
That’s Naruto, Konoha’s #1 in surprising people; Kakashi shook his head at the thought. The slight movement drew Naruto’s attention to the pale man in the doorway. His face scrunched in confusion and he stared for a moment, before putting his finger to his lips and gesturing to the sleeping boy. Kakashi nodded in understanding, and couldn’t help smiling at the familiar expression that had graced Naruto’s features. He walked over to the machines quietly keeping track of Naruto, and did a base check of his vitals before speaking.
“I’m going to go get Kabuto; will you be alright on your own for a moment?”
“Uh...yeah, sure.” His voice came out rusty from disuse. Kakashi filled the glass on the side table and handed it to him.
“Thanks.” He whispered after gulping down half the glass in one swallow.
“No problem,” Kakashi turned to leave, making it to the doorway before stopping.
“It’s good to have you back, Naruto.” He said before continuing on his way out the door. Naruto just blinked and watched him go, then turned his focus to the boy sleeping at his bedside.
He’d be floating in the dark, for what felt like forever. So far down not even his friend, the fox, could reach him, but this boy had. He had heard his voice and obeyed his command with out question, he hadn’t even attempted to fight it. He woke to find him crying softly, and had sought to offer comfort. He had just managed to sooth him into sleep not five minutes before the pale one arrived.
Somehow though, he knew it would be better to wake him before this Kabuto showed up. Usually he was terrified of strangers, not the boy though; he scratched his head and decided to figure it out later.
“Hey, wake up. Come on, getup, getup!” Sasuke raised his head, glaring groggily at whomever it was who woke him. That was, until his eyes came into contact with two bright blue orbs set in a VERY awake face.
“Naruto?” Sasuke blinked, realization dawning on his face before- “Naruto!” he lunged at him, wrapping his arms securely around him and burying his face at his neck.
“A...Ano...” he raised his free hand to scratch behind his head, and his cheeks flushed bright pink. He didn’t know why this guy was clinging like that, but it sure was embarrassing. Oh well, it was...kinda...nice too, he thought, and, hesitantly, he brought his arms up to embrace the other boy as well. When he started to cry again Naruto didn’t know WHAT to do, so he continued his actions from earlier. Running his fingers through the dark locks, marveling at how SOFT they were, and crooning to him quietly.
“It’s okay, everything’s alright now. Don’t cry, it’ll all be ok.”
They sat like that for a while, Sasuke’s cries settled into hiccups and he came back to himself. He was, however, too mortified to move, because that would mean he’d actually have to face Naruto, so he was fine where he was, thank you very much. And that was fine with Naruto , who enjoyed holding the boy immensely and was loathe to let him go.
“Ahem,” Kabuto coughed from the doorway, “I...uh...hate to interrupt but, I do need to run a few tests, Sasuke...”
Sasuke blushed, and chanced a glance up at Naruto. Naruto didn’t look embarrassed, far from it, he looked terrified. He was staring at Kabuto with the same panicked expression he wore in the woods where Sasuke found him. At the word ‘test’ Naruto went from a frozen statue to a thing very much alive, and writhed like a snake in Sasuke’s grip.
“Naruto! Damn it! What the hell’s wrong with him?!” Sasuke demanded, glairing at Kabuto.
“Probably a flashback, I have to sedate him.” Kabuto grunted as Naruto got one arm free and managed to clip him on the chin. There was a puff of smoke as Kakashi suddenly apparated into the room, momentarily distracting Naruto. Never one to miss and opportunity, Sasuke grabbed the recently liberated appendage and held it fast.
Kakashi quickly took stock of the situation and moved to assist Kabuto. Not giving an inch of opportunity to Naruto, the two switched places in a blur of motion and Kabuto ran from the room to fetch a sedative. As soon as Kabuto was gone, Naruto’s struggles calmed. Still testing the hold of his captors, but not the previous attempts of serious escape.
Those panicked struggles came back with a vengeance, however, when Kabuto returned with needle in hand.
“Can you get me and arm, Sasuke?” He fought for a moment, but managed to pin one of Naruto’s arms so that Kabuto could administer the injection.
“NO!” Kabuto hesitated as the bright red chakara of the fox flared up to prevent the needle from making contact.
“Naruto! Stop it!” It was as if some one had found the off switch. The second Sasuke shouted the command all movement ceased, the boy’s body went limp and the chakara disappeared. Sasuke stared at Naruto in shock, and his heard gave a painful thump in his chest as his instincts screamed that something was very, very, wrong.
“No more...please...” Naruto whimpered quietly as Kabuto gave him the injection.
“Naruto...no one here will hurt you, I promise.” The sound was barley more that the breath of a whisper. The response was immediate. Naruto Curled toward Sasuke as much as the restraining hands would allow. Burying his face in Sasuke’s shirt and sobbing quiet plea’s that he could barely understand.
“Please...no more tests...I’ll be good, I promise, just no more tests...” Moving slowly so as not to spook him, Sasuke pulled Naruto up so that he was effectively sitting in his lap. He wrapped his arms around the shaking youth, in a dramatic role reversal from just fifteen minutes prior, stroking his back and speaking in soft low tones.
“Shhh...No more tests, I promise, just a little something to help you sleep.”
“Sleep?”
“That’s right Naruto you can go to sleep now, but you have to promise to wake up again, can you do that for me?”
“Will you stay with me?”
“Yes, but you have to swear to me Naruto, swear you’ll wake up.”
“I swear...”
Five minutes later Sasuke was lowering him back into bed as he slept, Kabuto taking his chance to pull blood samples, check his vitals, and reinsert the IV that had come loose in the struggle.
After seeing that Naruto was effectively tucked in for the moment, Sasuke turned his attention to the whispered conversation already going on between Kabuto and Kakashi
“...We don’t know that it has anything to do with that.”
“Don’t know what has anything to do with what?” Sasuke interrupted.
Kabuto sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
“Sasuke we have to talk...about Naruto.”
