Sakura’s dreams were more peaceful this time. There was no death; no funerals to attend. Her dreams were made up of her, Naruto and romantic situations and almost all of them ended up sealed with a sweet kiss. They were so innocent up to that last one. The last one was what brought her blushingly to the waking world. They had both been sweaty and grunting in the dream but as she awoke, the grunting didn’t go away and she was certainly sweating. She was almost afraid to open her eyes and see just what was going on.
Gathering her courage, she cracked her eyes open and took in a sight that both relieved and alarmed her. Naruto stood across the room training by punching air and working up a nice sweat of his own. The way he stood in front of the window silhouetted him against the mid afternoon light while the sweat caught enough light to give him an almost ethereal glow. Sakura couldn’t tear her eyes away from the sight if she tried. He looked gorgeous like that and the fact that the sight brought a tingling sensation to her stomach frightened her a bit. She knew she cared for him but to lust after him so suddenly after her realization was scary on a whole other level. Though she had to admit, it was also quite exciting. With Sasuke she’d always had unrealistic expectations but Naruto may meet those. In fact, she was sure he would be able to exceed them.
Slowly, she sat up in her bed so she could watch him a bit better but it seemed she’d made more noise that she’d intended when he turned her way with a smile, “Hey, Sakura-chan! You’re finally awake. I was worried you’d sleep the entire day away!”
Looking out the window, Sakura shook her head, “I already did. It’s almost dusk, Naruto.”
He rubbed the back of his head sheepishly in that pose that made him so cute to her, “Oh yeah. Guess I was training longer than I thought.” Reaching down, he grabbed up his shirt and put it on before walking over to her bed, “How’re you feeling, Sakura-chan?”
She smiled up at him softly, pulling her knees to her chest and wrapping her arms around them, “Ok, I guess. Just tired.”
The chair screeched against the cold tile as Naruto pulled it over to her bedside and sat down, “Sakura-chan, why are you here?”
Now, Sakura had been expecting the inevitable question but she wasn’t ready for the wave of shame. He wouldn’t understand. His nindo would never allow him to do such a thing, let alone condone someone who would. She would be lucky if he didn’t hate her after this. “I’m sorry, Naruto.”
Contrary to popular believe, Naruto wasn’t always oblivious. He’d noticed the bandages last night and he knew what was going on. He just wanted to hear it from her own mouth. He had to know why. “Please, Sakura. Tell me.”
Hearing him address her without the honorific told her that was being incredibly serious. He never spoke to her so personally like that before. She wanted so bad just to ignore the question and go back to starting at him as he worked out. “Naruto, I don’t want you to hate me. Please.”
He sighed and looked over at her, “I can’t hate you, Sakura-chan. I lo-“ he caught himself before he finished that statement but it didn’t go unnoticed, “You’re my best friend. I just need to know why.”
Silence hung over the room for an unbearable moment before she could respond. She was having far too much trouble speaking through the knot in her throat but she finally managed, “You were dead, Naruto. I-I just couldn’t stand the thought of losing you.”
Naruto smiled sadly, looking down at the floor, “I know you asked me to bring him back for you but even if I was dead, you would have found a way without me.”
“Sasuke-kun left of his own free will and it hurt. It hurt so much all I could do was cry and beg you to bring him back to me,” she said, looking over at the blonde beside her with tears rolling down her cheeks. “And then you come back and die in here, right in front of me. I couldn’t take it, Naruto.”
He shook his head, “I still don’t understand. I’m not so strong as to be the only one capable of bringing him back.”
“No, you don’t understand at all, do you?” she said softly, a sad kindness in her eyes. “He left me of his own will but you were almost taken from me; by him no less.” Had she been less emotional, the rational side of her brain would have made her hand lay still. Instead, her emotions guided her hand to rest against his cheek which brought his eyes to her, “Naruto, I finally understood what you meant when you said that I really loved him. It almost took your death for it to sink in to this giant forehead of mine.” She smiled at him and caressed his cheek, “When you said that, you sealed off your own heart to save mine and bring back the one I thought I loved.”
Looking at her, he refused to let himself hope. Nothing good could come of it. He’d stomped it down as hard as he could when he’d gone to get Sasuke but it seemed, despite his best efforts, he had failed. He saw her eyes and couldn’t help but smile. There was a spark there again.
“When your heart stopped, mine broke, Naruto. I realized that you were the one to anchor me to this place. If you weren’t here, there was no point. I need you to be with me, every step of the way. Not to hold my hand and live my life for me, but to be part of it. You give me strength.” She spoke slowly and sincerely, pulling the words directly from her heart.
Naruto reached up and grabbed her hand, pulling it away from his face and holding it in both of his, “Sakura-chan. You know exactly how I feel.” Blinking slowly, he willed the tears to stay in his eyes where they belonged, “Don’t say something like this to me unless you mean it. I couldn’t handle it.”
With her hand in his, she had all the leverage she needed to pull them together for a sweet and surreal first kiss. It was short and not at all like in the movies she’d always loved but it felt perfect to her. “I mean it, Naruto. I need you. I don’t want to live without you.”
He sighed and closed his eyes, leaning his head against hers, “Then promise me one thing. A promise of a lifetime.”
She nodded, her head moving his as well, letting him know her answer.
“Promise me you’ll never try again. No matter what happens to me, I don’t want you to take your own life. I don’t even want you to consider it. You know I would die for you, but more important, I will live for you. I want to know you’ll live for me too.”
She sniffed and nodded again, “I promise Naruto.”

Short but it seemed right to me. Gnosismaster’s pleading reminded me about this story and after reading what I’d written, I decided it needed closure. At least, I think this is closure. This seems like a good place to end it all. The other story I had in progress had half a chapter wiped away when my computer died so I haven’t felt like writing much. I’ll prolly get to it soon enough but, til then, Adieu.
