Sasuke slowly dropped his hand to his side, but not before brushing it gently down Naruto’s whiskered cheek. The boy’s eyes cracked open, looking intently at Sasuke. Sasuke had never seen Naruto look at him that way before and it quickly brought him from the serene moment. He diverted his eyes and put his hands in his pockets as he pushed himself away from the counter. He turned to Naruto, who still looked slightly dazed and somewhat sleepy, “Y…you should go to bed,” the foreign words of kindness stumbled from his lips. Was he…nervous?

Naruto just nodded, his body going cold as he watched Sasuke turn away from him. That moment…he had wanted that moment to last…and then he had felt Sasuke brush his hand down his cheek and he couldn’t help but open his eyes to see the boy’s face. It had been peaceful; there was no frown, no anger in his eyes, it was just peaceful and beautiful. And then Sasuke had turned away…

Naruto followed behind the boy quietly, trying not to think back to the moment they had had in the kitchen. If he did, he knew he would start to get hopeful…and wish for something that would never happen. He entered the bedroom Sasuke had prepared for him and stood as he watched Sasuke change the sheets.

“There…now sleep,” Sasuke said as he pulled back the covers and then turned to walk past Naruto. Naruto stiffened as the boy walked past him and without thinking he reached out and grabbed Sasuke’s wrist, “Wait…”

Sasuke froze as he felt Naruto’s hand gripping his wrist. He could feel the boy’s body heat radiating from just that one hand and an involuntary shiver traveled down his spine. He looked down at his wrist and then his eyes traveled back to Naruto’s. The boy was looking at him with an almost comically confused expression. Sasuke just stared at him and then responded with an always elegant, “What?”

“Er…I was uh,” Naruto’s mind went completely blank, he had no idea why he had grabbed Sasuke’s wrist. Perhaps it was because he didn’t want to sit alone in this room…he seriously doubted he could fall asleep…especially not since the Kyuubi had decided to use him for it’s own personal amusement.

“Dobe…go to bed. I’ll be working on mission reports at the desk in the corner. Call if you need anything,” Sasuke said as he (regretfully) pulled his wrist from Naruto’s hand and headed over to the desk to get started on “mission reports”. In all honesty, he didn’t have any mission reports that were overdue; he always turned them in the morning after his missions. So why did he say that he would be in the room with Naruto?

‘He looked…lonely. This is pathetic. Why is it I can’t seem to keep these feelings under control when he is around me? It was never this bad before…’ Sasuke thought. Of course, he knew –why- his thoughts had been easier to ignore before. Whenever Sasuke was near Naruto it was for training or missions, therefore, his mind was occupied with other important matters. But now, with Naruto being around him 24/7 and needing his help…these thoughts were tormenting him.

---

Naruto climbed into bed and curled up quickly; he wanted to fall asleep before Sasuke left……………….

Sleep was not going to grant him that request it seemed.

Naruto squeezed his eyes shut and willed his body to relax. He ignored the dull aching and shivering that still accompanied the slight fever he had and tried to clear his mind. However, this was near impossible. His mind kept wandering back to the kitchen. Sasuke’s hand had been warm. It was strange…when Sasuke had been touching him, he had felt…happy. Happier than he could ever remember having felt before in his life and then he had opened his eyes and Sasuke had been looking right at him and had brushed his hand against his cheek. Naruto was at a loss for why the dark-haired ninja would have been so gentle with him…unless Sasuke had feelings for him. Naruto would have laughed at the idea if the situation hadn’t been so serious and involving his own feelings.

Why would the Uchiha have feelings for him?

Naruto had no idea why he would, but there were clues and hints here and there that the Uchiha just might have some sort of feelings for him. Why else would he have made up such a lame reason for staying in the room with Naruto? Sasuke had clearly seen that Naruto had wanted him to stay…and he had agreed to do so…

What does that mean?

Naruto blinked sleepily and then yawned…thoughts of Sasuke running through his mind as he fell asleep.
--

Sasuke glanced back to the bed and was relieved to see that Naruto had curled up and appeared to have fallen asleep rather quickly. ‘Hn…dobe,’ Sasuke smiled an uncharacteristically soft smile and then turned back to his desk and pulled out a sheet of paper. He did have something he needed to write up: an update on Naruto’s condition for the Godaime. Perhaps she could figure out what was going on with Naruto based on his changing symptoms. If anything, he seemed to be improving. During dinner it had seemed as though Naruto was almost back to his normal self. He still had a fever, but it was much lower than it had been and he had a healthy appetite, which is a good indicator that his body is healing itself.

Sasuke began writing the letter to the Godaime, carefully noting all of the symptoms and also adding in the Kyuubi incident. He wasn’t sure what was going on there, since Naruto hadn’t said much of anything, and it may be a regular occurrence, but he’d tell her anyway, in case it may have something to do with this strange illness.

--

The next morning Sasuke cracked open an eye and winced as pain shot up his spinal cord. He slowly sat up straight and grimacing, cracked his back. ‘It probably would have been smart to have arranged another bed in here instead of sitting in this chair…’he thought irritably as he winced again in pain. Once he was certain Naruto was asleep, he had moved his chair closer to watch over the boy. He wanted to make sure that the Kyuubi did not attempt to ruin Naruto’s sleep again. Somehow he had managed to fall asleep while watching over Naruto. The dark haired boy looked down at the sleeping figure and rolled his eyes. Sometime in the middle of the night Naruto had managed to entangle himself in the blankets and throw his pillow onto the floor. In short, Sasuke’s extra bed was a disaster area with a blond sprawled out in the center.

Sasuke looked at Naruto’s sleeping face, focusing on the whisker marks. They were a sign of the demon Naruto had had trapped inside of his body for almost eighteen years now. Sasuke was tempted to reach out and touch them; to see what they felt like, but then decided that it would be a bad idea. Especially considering the dobe might wake up whilst he was touching his cheek.

He sighed, his thoughts had been running wild ever since Naruto had become ill and he had agreed to take care of him. He couldn’t even push them away anymore…

Years ago, he had entertained thoughts of the blond ninja. He couldn’t recall ever having felt that way about anybody. It was beyond normal friendship and far beyond rivalry. He would die for the boy. He couldn’t say that he’d do the same for anybody else he knew. He was attracted to everything about the energetic blond ninja and he would do anything to keep the boy in high spirits…but he had suppressed those feelings. The last of the Uchiha clan could not fall for a man. Heirs were needed in order to continue the bloodline. He had a duty to fulfill for his family. And so, he had buried those feelings and locked them away, denying himself any sort of comfort from Naruto’s presence and keeping up the façade that he was the boy’s eternal rival. But now…

Now that the boy was here and they were getting along…

He didn’t want to keep up that façade anymore. Why should he have to carry all of the responsibility? His entire life had been shattered the day his –brother- had killed his clan. Perhaps it was fate that the Uchiha clan die out…their true bloodline limit could only be attained through horrible sacrifice…why should he have to keep it alive? Why couldn’t he be –happy- finally? He wanted to be with Naruto. He wanted to stay by his side forever.

Sasuke clenched his teeth; it would never work the way he wanted it to. Naruto didn’t care for him like that…he was just a friend. A friend and nothing more…

But what about what happened last night…

Naruto had grabbed his wrist…and had had such a desperate look in his eyes. Was it because he was afraid? Afraid of what? His illness? The Kyuubi? That would make some sense, but then…after being around the fox demon for so long, why would he be so afraid of him still? Or was it that Naruto wanted to be near him?

Sasuke almost huffed in frustration. He had no idea. He couldn’t keep dwelling on these thoughts. He needed to help Naruto to get better, not try to think of ways for them to be together.

He stood up from his chair quietly and moved across the room to write a quick note to Naruto:

Went to report to the Hokage about your improving condition. Do not leave the house. There is food in the refrigerator. Don’t do anything else until I get back.
--Sasuke

He placed the note next to Naruto on the chair and then headed out for Tsunade-hime’s office. He needed to drop off the letter for the Godaime and clear his mind on the way. He gave one look back at the house and then used the rooftop route to get to his destination.

---

A chuckle.

Naruto flinched…he hated that sound. It worked its way up his spine and made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. He looked around the room and frowned; he wasn’t in the main room…he was back in that cage again. And if he was in the cage, that meant he wasn’t alone.

‘Correct, kit.’

Naruto turned and came face to face with a large yellow eye. He could see himself perfectly in that eye; he was small and looked very fragile…why did he look so frail?

‘That is what you would have looked like if I hadn’t been trapped inside of you.’

The demon blinked and the image was gone; Naruto now stared at his normal self,
‘What the hell do you want?’

‘Oh nothing really…you know…the boy left. You are all alone with me…again. As always you will be left alone with nothing but a demon fox as company; the demon fox that killed the family members of your closest friends. Does that bother you?’

‘Why should it bother me? I didn’t kill them and they know that.’ Naruto answered with an exasperated huff; he was really tired of listening to this fox.

The fox chuckled that hollow chuckle once again; Naruto tried to suppress the shiver that wanted to run up his spine.

‘Do you know what is wrong with you, kit?’

Naruto blinked and looked up at the large creature and then cocked his head his eyes challenging the creature, ‘No…do you?’

The fox chuckled again, ‘ You mean to tell me that the new Hokage can’t figure it out. How disappointing. Of course…she is nothing like the one who sealed me here. Perhaps she should look into studying his –methods- of battle. It may help her improve…or get her killed sooner.’

The fox barked out a laugh at this.

Naruto growled low in his throat, ‘Shut it fox. The Yondaime sacrificed himself to save everyone from –you-. That is what a Hokage does: fights for his village. Not like you’d understand…you just kill things for the hell of it.’

The fox stopped laughing and leaned down to peer at Naruto, ‘Don’t speak of things you know nothing about, kit. I’m being nice to you today…or do you want me to toy with you again?’

Naruto stopped, his mouth open in a retort and then he closed it. He frowned in thought and turned away from the fox to look out from the cage, ‘ne…why did you attack the village?’

He heard the fox grunt and then he was being pulled from the cage…he looked in from the outside and was surprised to see the fox wearing a strange expression…he looked almost…sad…and then everything went white…

--

Naruto opened his eyes and looked around the room; he was alone. He wondered briefly how he had managed to wake up from the Kyuubi’s conversation without having been forced awake, but decided he really didn’t care to dwell on it. He sat up slowly and yawned, scratching his belly and blinking his eyes clean of sleep. He made a disgusted face at the taste in his mouth and how thick his tongue felt. “Gross…” he said as he pulled back the covers and hopped out of bed.

He froze on the spot.

He blinked.

And then he jumped for joy.

‘YATTA! I’m CURED!~~” he screamed in joy as he danced around the room.

It was true. He felt…normal! His head didn’t hurt. He had no shivers running up and down his body. And speaking of his body: IT DIDN’T ACHE! He felt 100% healthy again. “Heh heh, Sasuke is a pretty decent nurse,” he snorted as he bounced over to the door. He paused at the doorknob as a note on the chair back by the bed caught his attention. It was from Sasuke. Naruto read it over and then smirked, ‘Hn…don’t leave, ne? Food in the fridge…’

Shrugging, Naruto went out of the room and walked down the hallway to the kitchen. He grabbed the milk and hunted around for the cereal, then settled down for a quick breakfast. ‘Hn, wonder how long teme has been gone…’ he wondered as he crunched on some corn flakes.

After his meal, he washed up the dishes (it wasn’t his house after all…and besides, Sasuke had been treating him quite well lately…might as well do the dishes for him, ne?) and then went back into the bedroom to retrieve his clothes and hunt down a towel. He grabbed up his stuff and then headed for the bathroom where he quickly cleaned up.

‘I can’t believe how fast I’ve healed…I suppose Kyuubi was able to fight the cold in the end,’ Naruto thought idly as he brushed his teeth. He stared at himself in the mirror and then smiled a big, foamy smile; he loved feeling back to normal and healthy. He’d never take his good health for granted again. Ever.

And now that he was better, he could train again and go home and go on missions and…

Everything would go back to normal.

Naruto paused in his brushing and frowned, toothpaste dripped from his toothbrush and landed on the counter. He blinked and looked down at it. He stopped brushing his teeth and spit the toothpaste into the sink, rinsing it down with cold water from the tap.

Everything would go back to normal.

He lifted his head quickly as he heard the door open and then shut and a muttered ‘tadaima’ come from the foyer. Sasuke was back from running his little errand.

Everything would go back to normal now…

“Dobe? Are you in there?” A knock on the bathroom door made Naruto blink out of his thoughts. He stared at the door and then at the mirror. His mouth twisted up into a devilish smirk: the smirk of someone who was planning something dangerous yet thrilling at the same time.

Everything would go back to normal…

Unless –he- did something about it.

He was tired of fighting it…and after last night’s strange little episodes…he was certain the Uchiha was hiding something from him…ne?
