“Kanna....Kanna” He sighed slightly aggravated and searched the ground for a small pebble. Upon finding on he sent it flying and it hit the glass window. No response, just movement of a shadow in the light of the room. With another sigh he found another pebble and threw it at the window but the back door to her home was ripped open and the tall muscular form illuminated by the inside light made him duck back in the bushes.
“Where are you going?” The pleading voice on the inside only further made his heart race. Were her parents arguing?
“I’m going for air, then I will hunt down whatever hooligan ruined my family. Obviously our daughter is delirious from whatever promises of love he has given her because she won’t even give his name.”
“There is no name to tell...”
“Like hell there is no name to tell!” His voice was loud and echoed back at him in the darkness. Upon hearing his echo he immediately calmed and sat down on the back stoop.
“I mean I don’t know!!!” Kanna raised her voice and an audible slap was heard.
“Do not yell at your father. At this point you have no say in what happens. No go rest like the doctor had ordered.”
“Yes, mother...” A defeated sigh escaped her lips.
“Midori...” Her father’s voice called out to him making him jump. “Kanna will not be coming to sit with you and your family tonight...”
“Y-yes sir!” He stood up in the bushes. His young body hardly tall enough to look over the bush he was standing behind.
“Goodnight Midori...”
“Goodnight Sir...” Midori walked away pouting wondering what exactly had Kanna done. “I wish I were older so I’d at least have an idea of what happened.” He kicked at a rock and made his way home.
“Tazuki...” The woman finally made her way out to him.
“Maia, it really is unbelievable...” His voice was strained with anger being held back. He whipped his head to look at his wife hoping to further vent but stopped once he saw her looking in the direction Midori had disappeared tears slowly running down her face.
“Are we really such failures as parents?” She whispered. “Or as people?”
“What are you talking about, Maia?”
“The Unnamed God is punishing us for something. Our son has a weak body and cannot become a proud warrior for this village, our daughter couldn’t even become a wife since she failed to have proper mannerisms. And now she’s...”
“Don’t even punish yourself, Maia.” He gave a soft smile.
“I think the Unnamed God is punishing me.” Her voice held deep bitterness. “Our daughter is forever tarnished. Who could want a girl who already bears a child? In the morning everyone will know.” She sighed. “I’ve wanted nothing more than the best, just like any parent does...”

The sun was bright the next morning. Fortunately Kanna had been able to keep down broth and bread as her breakfast. But even she knew she couldn’t go back to school and pretend nothing was wrong. The people on this side of the village were married women and unmarried daughters. The only men were those who were married. It was to prevent scenarios like her from happening and distracting the men from their training as soldiers.
“Lai was right, I’ll never get married...” She whispered picking up her black pencil crayon. With a dejected sigh she began sketching. Sketching in her mind the one thing that stood out about the man that ruined her life. The one thing she remembered so well. Twin red orbs looking so hard and coldly at her. “I’ll never get married...” She whispered again this time her strokes becoming faster, harder. “I’ll never get married and leave this place!!!” She just balled up the paper halfway through and threw it across the room. Hands were placed on her cheeks right over the trail her tears made.
“Kanna...”
“Jiro...” She whispered looking at her younger brother.
“Kanna, mama is ready to go shopping for dinner. We should go now.” His voice was still young much like him, but the look in his eyes made him seem wise beyond his years. He moved his thumbs cutting off the wet track on her face leaving it to her to wipe her own eyes.
“I don’t want to go.”
“So you’d rather stay here? People will talk whether you show your face or not.” His voice whispered. “Showing your face just makes you a stronger and better person. And you are a stronger person than that Kanna.” Yes... he was without a doubt wiser beyond his years. He sat on the floor when she finally stood to tie her Obi to properly close her Kimono.
“Let’s go...” She sighed and he finally stood and the two went to meet their mother who too looked nervous about the things that would be said.
