I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
chapter iv
A/N: This story is going to make me fail my freshman year of college. But that’s okay! Okay, so it’s not really okay, but then again, I’m not really going to fail, so that’s fine too haha. Anyhow, I’m going to thank everyone again for being such amazing reviews! I really look forward to reviews because it motivates me to write more, and it’s interesting to see people’s opinions on how they’d like the story to progress. Anyhow, I will take this time to return just a few reviews, since I didn’t manage to do so last time:
Seto’s Darkness: I love your comments! They’re so long and humorous and...informative XD. I’m not going to give away much of the story here, because, frankly, I’ve been given a huge expanse of time to work with and a lot of freedom from this point on in the story (since the plot really begins to thicken when Naruto’s 18, whereas he’s only 13 right now) and even I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen in this time (plus Naruto’s only like...13 and 5 days at this point haha). So I’ve basically got 5 years to play around with Naruto, Sasuke, Neji, and Gaara. I won’t give away how it’s going to end up, but I will say that I too favor SasuNaru. In fact, I breathe SasuNaru. So I hope this will help quell your fears. However, I will also admit that love triangles and polygons, plus intense jealousy, and sadoukes are my guilty pleasure, so beware of some good-natured character torture.
To all Itachi-lovers: I don’t know exactly when he’s going to waltz into this story, but I will hand out cookies to anyone who thinks that he’s somehow related to Naruto’s current situation!

Under the Enemy’s Roof
chapter iv
--------------------------------------------------------------
Naruto swallowed nervously as he straightened his tie for the umpteenth time as he scurried through the halls. It seemed that his exploits had spread quickly through the school in the three-day absence that his guardians insisted that he took. Many of the girls looked away when he noticed them whispering, either out of embarrassment or out of fear. The blonde noted grimly that at least they had the decency to get flustered when caught gossiping, unlike some girls he had met. A lot of the boys would stop joking immediately as soon as he drew near, a look of panic strewn across their faces as they hurried out of his way.
Naruto’s brow furrowed at this, completely not understanding what was going on. After all, it seemed as if his classmates were actually frightened of him, which seemed so absurd to him that it was funny. No one had ever been afraid of him before, and it was usually him who did the whole cower and whimper act. He suddenly suspected that something very, very important had happened in the three days he had stayed away from school.
He noticed a crowd forming around the bulletin board as he passed by, wondering what the commotion was about, he approached the wall cautiously, still unsure of himself around large groups of people. To his surprise, everyone that had gathered around the notice suddenly parted, not unlike how the Red Sea had parted for Moses. Although the blonde found this behavior amusing, it also worried him to some extent. It was almost like he was being treated with respect, like he was suddenly someone very important; someone terrifyingly important.
Drawing close, the noticed that everything that had once been there had been torn down, and all that there was left was a single note written in neat calligraphy. Naruto squinted as he tried to understand as much of it as possible, as his ability to read kanji was significantly below average for his age, and probably even worse compared to the students of a ritzy, smarty school like Konoha Junior High. Luckily, the characters on the note had been chosen specifically for the purpose of formality and finality instead of ornamental language and elegant phrases so Naruto was able to comprehend the message quite clearly:
‘To the populace of Konoha Junior High:
You will not, under any circumstance, harass, offend, or otherwise interact negatively with Uzumaki Naruto. Any of the above actions committed will be taken immediately as a personal insult to both myself and my household. Should you partake in any such activity against him, I will personally see to it that you and your family will never show your faces in public again.
Sincerely,
Uchiha Sasuke’
Below that signature, the blond also found two others that had been scribbled directly below it, almost as if it were seals of approval. It vaguely reminded Naruto of a picture of the Declaration of Independence, he had once seen when he was younger, with all the swirly signatures by important people who agreed wholeheartedly with the previously stated message:
‘Hyuuga Neji’
and
‘Sabaku Gaara’
-------------------------------------------------------------
In less time than it took to pour water over instant cup ramen, Naruto had torn the message off of the bulletin board and was now racing down the hallways, determined to find any one of the three scoundrels who had to nerve to make him out to look weak in public. Luckily, it didn’t take long before he had to turn a corner and run smack into one of the offending three.
“Tch. Watch it,” came the annoyed remark, as, once again, Naruto who was shorter than most of his classmates, was sent staggering back a few steps while the other remained entirely unaffected. As soon as the blonde regained his balance, he took a good look at the person he had just run into, and was about to apologize when he recognized the tell-tale features of the person before him.
Red hair? Check.
Eye liner? Check.
Freaky love tattoo? Check.
Naruto growled as he verified that this, indeed, was one of the bastards who had posted, or at least approved, the message. He almost snorted as he remembered his promise to himself at the breakfast table that morning, when he told himself that he would definitely apologize and try to be friends with the redhead. As if. It was already taking the smaller boy all the energy in his body to keep from giving the person before him a good beating. He wanted desperately to lunge at Gaara now and do the petty talk about his insulting behavior later.
“What the hell is the meaning of this, you freak?!” roared Naruto as he held the note up to his opponent’s face. The other simply stared at it with a bored look on his face, which ultimately served to enrage the blonde more. Deciding to screw civility, the smaller boy readied himself to take the more direct approach in expressing his severe discontentment. However, just as he was about to jump on Gaara, fists ready for fighting, an arm suddenly wrapped itself around his stomach, pulling him back.
Turning his head, eyes shooting daggers at whoever had the gall to interrupt him, he found himself looking at the same pale-eyed boy who had helped him to school earlier in the week. He scowled as he recalled that this specific boy was also one of the three who had approved the psychotic message in his hand. He vaguely noticed a small, though frightened, crowd gather about them.
“Don’t think you’re off the hook either, girly boy!” shouted Naruto as he shoved the paper at Neji’s handsome face. The group that had gathered about them gasped at the name, and was certain that the dark-haired boy would exact careful and cruel revenge for every syllable that had come out of the younger boy’s mouth. Yet, much to their surprise, the upperclassman seemed almost amused by Naruto’s childish name-calling. However, after letting his exotic eyes travel over Gaara’s figure, the older boy’s expression immediately darkened.
It was no secret that Gaara and Neji were fierce enemies. Although the Sabaku and Hyuuga families had once been business partners, the two households had a sudden falling out immediately after the death of the former head of the Sabaku family. It seemed that the heir of the Sabaku estate, Gaara, wanted nothing to do with the workings of the Hyuuga family, publically denouncing their research as corrupt and volatile. This statement had resulted in a sharp decline in business for the once all-powerful Hyuuga corporation. Although the family maintained their luxurious lifestyle and grandeur despite the turn of events, and eventually regained all the business that they had lost, they still held a severe grudge against the young heir of the Sabaku house.
“Why the fuck aren’t you in class?” drawled a venomous voice from behind the trio. The entire crowd quickly scurried out of the way as a certain furious brunette made his way toward Naruto. All three of boys visibly bristled at the other’s presence, two of them for political reasons and one of them simply because he hated the bastard. Deciding that killing Sasuke definitely came before killing Gaara and Neji, the blonde quickly charged his supposed brother with an animalistic howl.
Dodging the small boy easily, by side-stepping the clumsily-planned attack, Sasuke then tightly grabbed an arm that was flying past him. Holding tightly to the limb, he then swept the other’s legs out from beneath him, causing Naruto to collapse. However, instead of letting his opponent fall, Sasuke looped his arm about the other’s hips, drawing him close. Recognizing his odd position pressed fully against the body of his rival like some damsel in distress against her hero, the blonde couldn’t help but blush. Then realizing that Sasuke was making him out to look like a girl, he gave the other a hard shove, which, unfortunately didn’t even budge the other.
A mummer broke out among the crowd as suddenly everyone felt like discussing the previously instated controversy over the Uchiha’s, or, for that matter, the Hyuuga’s, sexuality. Almost immediately, a scream pierced the air, distracting everyone, even the four bickering boys from what they were doing.
“Shut up! Sasuke-kun is not gay!” shouted a shrill voice from somewhere within in the crowd. People quickly moved away from the source of the protestor, seeing as the girl looked ready to explode in rage. A pink-haired girl emerged, fuming, from the crowd, green eyes flashing dangerously. “You guys don’t know anything about him!”
Sasuke immediately had the urge to tell the girl that she didn’t know anything about him either. However, just as he was about to publicly humiliate his most obsessive fan, he realized that Naruto was gawking at her pathetically. For some unexplained reason, the Uchiha felt a rush coming from his chest, running straight up to his head. Suddenly everything in his world narrowed to just Sakura. Sakura and Naruto, or, rather, Naruto looking at Sakura. Then his mind flickered toward the gratifying experience of maybe pulling out a handful of that annoyingly pink hair. Realizing what he was thinking, the brunette shook his head, trying to clear his head of the feeling. Failing miserably, the Sasuke decided that he had enough of the preclass drama for one day, and proceeded to drag a very unwilling and still drooling blonde to class.
As he passed Neji and Gaara, however, his eyes narrowed dangerously as he growled in a low voice, “You bastards better keep the hell away from him.” The other two, upon hearing the threat, simply glowered back at their enemy in response, taking it as more of a challenge than anything.
-------------------------------------------------------------
“Bastard, you can stop dragging me now!” protested Naruto as he stumbled after Sasuke while he was towed quite forcefully toward his homeroom class. “And what was that all about?!”
Quickly turning on his heel, Sasuke spun to face the other, scowl in place.
“You are part of the Uchiha household now, don’t you understand?! What you do effects the entire family! We’re not like your pathetic excuse of a family! You can’t just do anything you damn well want and get away with it! What I am doing is simply protecting my family’s honor!” shouted the brunette abruptly, causing the blonde to flinch visibly. “Don’t flatter yourself into thinking otherwise!”
Sasuke had to stifle a grimace that was trying to seep its way onto his face as he witnessed first the hurt overcome anger in those blue eyes and then fury overtaking the hurt. He hadn’t meant for it to come out so harshly, and he hadn’t meant to control the blonde, but it was true that the Uchiha family needed to stay aloof from most other families at this school for political reasons, especially the Hyuuga and Sabaku families. Yet, that wasn’t the only reason why he wanted to keep Naruto away from the two boys. However, he couldn’t put into words the tightness he felt in his chest whenever he saw the blonde talking to the other two boys. He didn’t know anything about himself when it came to the younger boy, because it seemed that most of the time he just acted on instinct.
“Don’t you dare insult my family,” growled Naruto as he stared daggers at the Uchiha. “Don’t you dare act like you understand anything about me.”
With that, the other boy stomped away from a stunned Sasuke who was already beginning to regretting his words.
