Lightning-

The storm raged outside, angry and abusive, lashing rain against her window and screaming obscenities. Hinata did not feel well. She lay on their couch watching the television, head cushioned in Neji’s lap as he dozed and Naruto made her soup in the kitchen. She had woken up early this morning only to rush to the bathroom and loose the contents of her stomach. Since then she hadn’t been able to keep anything down. She was late. She was ill. How had it happened? They had been so careful…except for that time…and that one…and…well, maybe they hadn’t been as careful as she thought. She wondered how she was going to tell them as the storm mocked her sorrow outside the window.

Sweat trickled down into her eyes as she pushed. It hurt more than anything she had ever felt but she didn’t scream. Naruto was a different story. He was clutching her hand harder than she was clutching him and bawling. He spouted every thing he had ever heard in reference to childbirth, constantly, and in no particular order. Neji, however, had turned green at the first sign of blood and excused himself from the room to worry silently in the lobby. She slid into darkness to the sound of Naruto’s babbling and the beeping of the baby’s heart monitor between contractions. Then her stomach would cramp up and she’d be awake again, pushing. Time had no meaning to her as she slept in fits, waking to the pain and sleeping again. She had told Sakura she didn’t have to be the doctor if she didn’t want to, but the pink haired medic-nin had merely smiled and said she wouldn’t miss this for the world. She had been the first one she told as soon as she figured out what was going on. She had smiled slyly and asked who the lucky boy was, only to be shocked with the knowledge that Hinata didn’t know. She had consoled the Huuga girl as she cried with the knowledge that it would be clear who the father was once the baby was born, Naruto and Neji looked so different after all. Then suddenly the pressure was gone and a thin, high-pitched wailing filled the room. There was some action below the blue cloth that covered her as Sakura and the other med-nins rushed the infant to a warming table to be dried, weighed and measured before wrapping it in a second blue blanket and handing it to Hinata. “Congratulations” Sakura smiled, teary eyed, “It’s a boy.” She looked up at her former team-mate who was sobbing by now, large happy tears pouring down his cheeks, she smiled at him, “You too.” Naruto could only nod vigorously in response.
Neji burst into the room then, eyes wide, and strode slowly, almost stumblingly, to her bed. He kneeled by her, head propped on one hand to see the child, the other clasped on hers. He smiled as tears filled his eyes, “He looks like you…” he whispered. The sleeping baby had wisps of blue-black hair curling over his forehead and Hinata’s soft ovaline facial structure. Hinata smiled, bundling the child closer and sat up slowly. She took Neji’s hands in her one and positioned them just so then, much to the distress of the older Huuga, placed the baby in his arms. Neji gaped, mouth opening and closing, all his doubts clear in his eyes for all to read. He trembled as he stood, holding the child close to him. He walked to the chair as slowly as if he was treading on eggs and trying not to break a one. He sat in equally slow motion, holding his breath and freezing when the infant yawned and waved his arms sleepily. Neji waited for the child to still before sitting down entirely and breathing a sigh of relief. Naruto crawled up onto the bed next to her then, hugging her to him. He was a nonstop source of whispered praise: she was incredible, she was so strong, he never could have done it, he loved her, Neji loved her, the baby was beautiful, she was beautiful, he loved her. She fell asleep to the sound of his voice.

Neji trembled as he held the boy. He didn’t know what to do. He was so tiny, so delicate. Neji smiled, he was part of Hinata, and he loved him already, if only for that. Then the child opened his eyes and Neji stilled. They were black. He didn’t have black eyes, neither did Naruto. In fact he looked almost like…Neji stood and placed the baby in the warming tray that sat by the bed. It was time he and Sasuke had a talk.

Sakura couldn’t stop talking about the baby. Baby this, baby that, wouldn’t it be nice if…? She seemed a little nervous when she said that last part but Sasuke barely noted it. He had been tuning it out for the last five minutes or so as the medic rambled on and on about having kids. That was the last thing Sasuke needed. A little brat under foot? He barely had any time to himself as it was between missions and Sakura, whom he violated as frequently and passionately as was possible. He sipped his coffee as he watched people pass the outdoor café he had decided to take Sakura to. He nodded and hmm-ed at the appropriate intervals as Sakura rattled on.
He was torn out of his stupor, and his seat, as Neji appeared seemingly out of nowhere, picked him up by his collar and drug him into an ally. Sasuke threw the older boy off of him with practiced ease. “Don’t touch me.” He snarled. Sasuke had mellowed significantly since he had come back to the village, but he still was as prickly as ever if he felt forced. Neji looked fit to kill him. His voice was dripping with anger, “I know.” He whispered. Knew what? Sasuke felt taken aback, what the hell could he have done to the older man that could warrant this kind of reaction? “What?” “I know what you did.” He reiterated, “I know about you,” Neji flushed, fists trembling at his sides, “I know about you and Hinata.” “WHAT?!?!?” Sasukes’s eyes snapped to the street where Sakura stood watching them. “Sakura I…!” he started, then to Neji “I never!” then back, “Sakura you have to believe me!”

Sakura laughed. “So he has black eyes then?” Neji nodded. “I thought…” He smiled bitterly at Sakura, “I guess I got carried away.” He went back to quietly sipping his green tea. He couldn’t help it; in the short year the three of them had been together he had grown to care so much for Hinata, for both of them really. The baby had black eyes. Sakura said they might change, but until they did there was no telling if it was his or Naruto’s. All he knew was that it…no, he, Neji corrected himself, was part of Hinata, and that was enough, wasn’t it? He sipped his tea in silence as Sakura and Sasuke slipped off.
**
Naruto smiled as he played with the cooing baby. He was three months old now and Hinata had named him Aiko. Huuga Aiko. It had a kind of ring to it. Aiko screwed up his little face and squealed in high-pitched baby delight as Naruto made faces at him. He laughed. Aiko’s eyes had changed colors in the last week. They had been black for the longest time, and then without warning they had changed seemingly overnight. Neji and Hinata were both out on missions, which worked out well. Since none of them were on the same team usually some one was there to watch little Aiko. This time it was Naruto, and he was the only one who knew now; Aiko’s eyes were a clear, pupiless blue. Aiko was his, without a doubt.
