It took fifteen minutes for a small, pale hand to creep out from the dark hole and snatch the offering. Neither man moved, listening to the desperate crunching and sniffling noises and hoping the child was relatively unharmed. Neither particularly wanted to have to perform the coup de grace on anyone with hands that small and pale.
It took almost an hour and a second apple to finally coax the shivering boy out from under the porch. The first question they asked sent him scrabbling back.
“Can you tell us who did this?”
Sasuke panicked, kicking and punching as he tried to get back to his cave.
He’ll kill me.
He killed Mother.
He killed Father.
He killed everyone.
Everyone.
Can’t tell.
Can’t think about it.
He’ll kill me.
“Whoa, kid. Whoa.” Genma said, struggling to hold the thrashing boy. “We’re not going to hurt you. You don’t have to say anything yet. We’ve got you. It’ll be OK.”
The boy subsided, trembling.
Kakashi squatted in front of the boy, not so incidentally putting himself between the child and his hiding place. One long finger tipped the quivering chin up, forcing the black eyes to focus on Kakashi’s face.
“Can you tell us your name?”
The boy started and turned his head away. He stared at the ground, shaking, poised to fight/run/hide; Kakashi repeated both his gesture and his question, making the child meet his eye as he pressed him for the answer.
The kid stopped struggling and almost spat out his name.
“Uchiha. Sasuke.”
