The Morning After
Chapter Four
The Morning After
(Okay, I don’t own anything but the words, lol. And someone asked when this was supposed to be, well, in my head it’s after Naruto returns, but I don’t really think it matters, but there you go, lol.)
When Hinata woke up again the sun was streaming through the little cabin. She blushed deeply when she realized that Naruto was sprawled across the bed, and she’d been using his chest for a pillow. She slowly got up and he made a little protesting noise when she left him but didn’t wake up. She couldn’t believe what she’d done last night. She half hoped it had been a dream, but she knew it wasn’t. The room was getting chilly and the fire was almost out. She carefully stoked it and added more wood so that it was blazing cheerfully again chasing out the cold, then she slowly put on her now dry clothes she was just about to pull her jacket on when she felt him watching her from the bed.
She turned to look and saw him watching her with serious and thoughtful eyes, it was a look she’d rarely seen on his face, one she’d only glimpsed when he thought he was alone. She looked down at the floor unable to help herself.
“Hinata… I have something I need to tell you,” he said slowly as though he was fighting to get each word out. He stood up and pulled on his pants and shirt and sat on the bed looking at her. “After… if you don’t feel the same way, I’ll… well, I’ll understand… just, you can’t tell anyone, none of our friends know except for my team, and, well… it’s why all the adults seem to hate me,” he looked at Hinata, he was unsure for once. She nodded reassuringly. He took a deep breath, “Hinata I’m the carrier of the Kyuubi,” he blurted out. Hinata looked at him in shocked disbelief. He lifted his shirt and showed her the seal, “This is what keeps him inside me. The fourth sealed him there. So… now you know why everyone hates me. I’m a demon,” he said suddenly angry and sad all at the same time.
“Naruto-kun,” she said softly and crying for him now, for his pain, she slowly wrapped her arms around him, “You’re not a demon,” she said softly.
“Hinata…” Naruto slowly smiled and hugged her back, “I think I underestimated you, but I won’t do it again,” he promised. Just then his stomach growled loudly interrupting the tender moment. Naruto looked a little sheepish but Hinata just giggled and pulled back and pushed her fingers together nervously.
Naruto laughed, his hand behind his head, a little embarrassed. “So, would you like some ramen for breakfast?” he asked already moving to make some ramen.
“Hai, Naruto-kun,” she said looking down she slowly pulled her jacket on and then started to tidy up the little cabin. Though it was sturdy it was obvious that it hadn’t been used in a long time, it was very dusty and the windows were filthy.
Naruto quickly made them both ramen and then they sat and ate together, thought Hinata had a hard time eating because she kept catching Naruto staring at her which would make her blush and feel too embarrassed to eat.
After they finished packing they both got ready to leave packing everything up and getting the cabin ready in case someone else needed to use it in a hurry.
They began to walk back to Konoha but for once Naruto did not treat it like a race. They walked at a fairly leisurely pace, well, for Naruto anyway and they talked. He asked her question after question. At first her answers were short and stilted but she slowly relaxed and realized that it was easier to talk like this, walking along, not having to look at each other and she slowly told him about her family, her fears, her hopes. They were so much more alike than he’d ever dreamed the number one loudest ninja and the quietest girl in their class.
By the time they’d made it back to Konoha it was dusk. The guards let them in and they were on their way to report to Tsunade-sama when Naruto paused, “Hinata?” he said a trifle nervously, even if he did think she’d say yes, there was always the possibility that she’d say no. “Wouldyouliketogooutwithmetomorrow?” he asked very quickly, running all his words together.
“What?” asked Hinata not sure she’d heard him correctly though she blushed at what she thought he’d said.
“Would you like to go out with me tomorrow?” he asked again slowly looking at the ground as he carefully said it again.
A smile slowly covered Hinata’s face even as a blush spread over her whole body. “Yes,” she said softly staring at the ground.
“Yes!” he shouted and jumped up punching the air. He pulled her into a hug and swung her around. “You’ll have lots of fun! You’ll see!” he said and grabbed her hand and dragged her to the Hokage’s office.
He burst inside with Hinata behind him blushing furiously because he was holding her hand. “Hey, Oba-chan! We finished the mission! Next time you’ll have to give us something super-hard, it was too easy, right Hinata?” he practically yelled.
Then of course Tsunade-sama hit him and he fell over, but this time Hinata caught him, even managing not to pass out. “Ow,” he said rubbing his head and then smiled up at Hinata, “Thanks Hinata,” he said and stood up straight again.
Tsunade-sama looked at them speculatively. She quickly debriefed them and then informed them that they’d both have a week off. Naruto didn’t even protest, his “Thanks Oba-chan,” only confirmed it. Something had happened while they were on this mission. Maybe the baka had finally got a clue.
She shook her head wondering about it as they both left.
