Early Morning Rain
A/N: this next chapter is short because it is the end of Act I. the next chapter will introduce, hopefully, a few new characters. and don't worry. kakashi's past (and sasuke's as it comes up in this chapter) will be revealed in due time. but before i get there, i promised some behind the scenes stuff, so you'll get a little of that too in the form of interludes or rather intermissions.
song: Early Morning Rain by Elvis Presley (Gordon Lightfoot sings it as well, though i've only ever heard it done by Elvis)

Act I, Scene IV: Early Morning Rain

[The curtain opens outside of an airport. The chain link fence that separates the runway from the grass is jutting out from center stage, angling off toward the audience at stage left. Outside the fence, Sasuke and Kakashi are lying upon the grass, their weight upon their elbows.]
“Okay, we got as far as here without getting caught.”
“We would be in California right now if it wasn’t for you.”
“What did I do?”
“Well, let’s see. When the truck finally got to the freighter, we learn that the train wouldn’t be leaving for another two hours. Then you disappear, telling me you’d be back in time, and then you. Are. Late!”
“Well, you see, there was this rabbit that needed help with-”
“Liar!”
“Yeah, well, we’ve had fun here.”
“We’ve spent all of our funds on liquor and whores.”
“Of which you’ve focused more on the liquor. What’s with that?”
“Hn.”
“In fact, you’re kind of lit right now, aren’t you?”
“Hn.”
[They are silent.]
“I’ve been wondering, Kakashi. You said you beat Maito-san up when you were kids, but you also said you’d only been in New York a year.”
“Ah, well, Gai didn’t always live in New York. He used to live on the west coast with me. As you know, his father was a distributor as well and had ties with New York. Gai went there as a representative when he was of an age and met his wife. We never lost touch, but we each changed. When I had to leave LA, I called him up for a job. And that’s where you came in. Well, a year later that is.”
“And you said you have cover for me in LA?”
“Yeah, an old friend of mine has a bar you can work in, though it’ll be up to you if you want the job or not.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, you’ll see. I don’t want to make you mad before we even get there. Though, knowing you used to live in LA years ago will help to convince you when we get there.”
[Sasuke startles and sits up to look down at the masked man.]
“Kakashi…”
“We’d better get going. The next freighter going to LA is leaving soon. [Kakashi looks off at the airport.] It sure would be easier if we could take a plane.”
[Kakashi gets up, sighs, and walks off stage. Sasuke is left on his own, to follow at his own discretion. The sounds of soft rain echo on the stage as a plane begins takeoff procedure in the background. Sasuke stands and dusts off his pants as the music plays.]
“In the early morning rain, with a dollar in my hand, and an achin’ in my heart, and my pockets full of sand, I’m a long way from home. And I miss my loved one so, in the early morning rain with no place to go.”
[Sasuke walks to the fence and threads his fingers through the links.]
“Out on runway number nine, big 707 set to go. Well, I’m out here on the grass where the pavement never grows, where the liquor tasted good, and the women all were fast. There she goes, my friend. She’s rolling out at last.”
[Sasuke’s head gradually rises, as if he is watching the plane climb in the sky.]
“Hear the mighty engines roar. See the silver wing on high. She’s away and a-westward bound. Far above the clouds she flies, where the morning rain don’t fall, and the sun always shines. She’ll be flying o’er my home in about three hours’ time.”
[He moves away from the fence and kicks at a few cans and bottles scattered about the grass.]
“This ol’ airport’s got me down. It’s no earthly good to me, ‘cause I’m stuck here on the ground, cold and drunk as I might be. Can’t jump a jet plane like you can a freight train. So I best be on my way in the early morning rain.
“So I best be on my way in the early morning rain.
“So I best be on my way in the early morning rain.”
[Sasuke wanders off the stage.]
