Chapter 3
Review reply:
ilene: Thank you very much for reading and reviewing!
kaa-san: Neji’s the bully and no nothing to do what happened to them in the past (even at their first meeting). Ano… about Sasuke… this chapter with his POV may help you understand him a bit more, XD.
And a huge thanks to RED ASATARI for beta-ing this chapter for me! –gives you a Yondaime cookie-
Of broken bonds (Part 2)
Three years later…
~FLASHBACK~
"For tomorrow's special mission, you should be present in the meeting room."
'Tomorrow?'
"If they approve of your test results, then they’ll acknowledge your skills and soon you'll be transferred to America."
".........."
"You understand, right?"
"........ There's no need to worry about it. But...." He glanced the eight year old boy beside him and motioned him to start.
"Um... dad... tomorrow's my..."
"Tomorrow's mission...is not only important for you but for the Uchiha Clan as well."
"Looks like I'm dropping tomorrow's mission then."
"Have you lost your mind?! You know how important this is!"
"Tomorrow, I'll be attending Sasuke's parent's meeting ceremony at school. It's required for a relative to attend the ceremony. Dad, you've received the letter, right?"
A pair of matured ruby depths glanced at the younger boy and after a few second, he spoke again.
"I understand. I'll go to the school."
~END OF FLASHBACK~
After that, Mr. Uchiha attended Sasuke’s school’s parents meeting but things went back to how they used to be. As if those scores worth nothing, as if he was worth no attention. As if those were supposed to happen and nothing’s too great about them.
~FLASHBACK~
"What did you say? Do you understand how important tomorrow is?"
".................."
"You don't understand your position!"
"I have another mission tomorrow."
"What mission?"
"I can't tell you that." Before the other could ask about it he quickly added, "Its classified."
"Itachi. You're the link that connects us to them. You do understand that, right?"
"Yeah."
"Make a good impression and come to the meeting tomorrow."
~END OF FLASHBACK~
‘What were they talking about?’ the young clueless Uchiha wondered the entire school-hour. He couldn’t concentrate on any of his work. He had to know what they were discussing about. Its true it was about some secret mission among the polices, but their father never denied or got so angry at his brother for any missions before. ‘Moreover, why was brother so secretive about his mission to dad?’
He even had an argument with his best friend in the school. All the blond wanted was to see the stupid dog. Why did he have to be so mean? Moreover… day by day, he could feel his friend was hanging around with the dog-boy more than him. What was so good about that boy? Was he not his best friend anymore?
He remembers the first time his best friend told him he had no parents, it was a Christmas evening. He even talked to his brother about it and asked him what he should do. His brother told him he could invite him over. The blond told him that was the first present he ever received that day too.
After that, they’ve been an inseparable pair. That is… until a certain Inuzuka came around.
~FLASHBACK~
“Big brother, I want that rabbit!” a small finger pointed at the small white furry creature in the cage.
“Are you sure? Why not a cat or a dog?” Itachi raised an eyebrow in surprise, he always thought Sasuke liked foxes or dogs, whatever he and Naruto tried to draw all over his school assignments.
“Dobe and I rescued this rabbit during the school break.” He told excitedly, sticking his face to the glass outside the pet shop. “We saw Mr. Bunny was hopping by the pool and he was about to fall you know. We both caught him before he could drown.” Itachi listened to the story in amusement as his seven year old brother continued to explain excitedly, waving his hands occasionally.
“Mr. Bunny?”
“Dobe named him that!” Sasuke scowled, “I wanted to name him Mr. Fuzz but Dobe thinks its too common!”
“Mr. Fuzz?” One of the crimson eyes twitched as his little brother continued to speak.
“Yes, and you know what? After we showed him to Iruka-sensei, he called the pet shop and told them to take him away.” Anger was flashing visibly in that cute seven year old’s face. “We asked why couldn’t we take him home and he said Mr. Bunny needs to finds a proper owner… and we couldn’t take anything we found back home,” a small hand tugged at the black sleeve of the older Uchiha and Itachi looked down to find a sad looking Sasuke looking at him, “Are we… are we not proper owners for Mr. Bunny?”
~END OF FLASHBACK
He was going to tell his best friend that he finally got their Mr. Bunny out of the pet-shop-prison but the blond was too busy commenting over a stupid dog. He even started spending more time with Kiba while he was left taking care of Mr. Bunny himself.
Even so, things weren’t still going so smooth in the house. After his brother bought him Mr. Bunny, they used to take care of him together but, recently, his brother was… also distancing himself from him, just like Naruto. Was it him? Did he do something wrong?
Why was everyone leaving him?
~FLASHBACK~
"Is Itachi here? We need to speak with you. Come out!"
"What is it? With all of you here...?"
"Two were absent from last night's meeting. Why didn't you come?"
"....................."
"When you were promoted to be the captain, you have had several missions, I understand that. Your father has reported that to us too, but... we don't plan to give you any special treatment."
"I understand. I'll be more careful now. Please leave."
"You're right. But before that, there's something else we want to ask you... Its about the suicidal case in the northern quarters of the estate."
"The other one who was absent last night was Uchiha Shisui." Another man informed, "In the records, he was your partner, then a subordinate when you were promoted. On the other hand, you two are childhood friends, as heard." A brief pause, “It’s assumed that you might know something about his death.”
"I haven't seen him at all recently. It’s unfortunate."
~END OF FLASHBACK~
A year later…
“Is he going to be okay?”
“I don’t know, he hasn’t woken up yet. Report to me as soon as he does.”
“Yes, doctor.”
There was a sound of opening and closing door before everything went silence, but only for a few seconds.
“Hey… isn’t this the Uchiha kid?”
“Yeah… you heard?”
“Yeah, that was terrible. Who could’ve done such a cruel thing?”
“Thank goodness this kid was outside during all that happened…”
It was clear and painful of what they were talking about. ‘Why did it have to be that way?’ he didn’t want to open his eyes even when the tears slipped out of the closed ones. He never wanted to open them again.
~FLASHBACK~
The blond started daydreaming as soon as he saw the Haruno girl pacing back and forth in front of the school building, as if waiting for someone. When a familiar figure came out of the building, she started to follow him excitedly. The blond, on the other hand, accidentally dropped the paint bucket that was resting where he kept his hands folded while watching the girl below. It landed directly on the Uchiha’s head.
Five minutes later the blond was left beaten up severely on the rooftop, with an extremely terrified dog-lover.
~END OF FLASHBACK~
‘Why?’ Sasuke asked himself as he thought of all the things he went through in one day.
“Poor thing! He’s crying in his sleep!”
“I think he’s waking up, call the doctor.”
‘No… I don’t want to wakeup… I never want to wakeup… please don’t wake me up!’ he wanted to scream as he scrunched his eyes close.
“Call the doctor! Someone call the doctor! The patient is waking up!” that was the last thing he heard before he fell into the darkness once again.
‘Shouldn’t they be looking after him… than… me?’
~FLASHBACK~
It was a full moon night with a clear sky. The little nine year old Uchiha was on his way to his home. He was a little late that night and it wasn’t his fault. Some idiot dropped a whole bucket of pink paint on him from top of the school building, during break time. But it was that idiot again. Why did he always have to be so clumsy? And why did he have to always drag the Uchiha in his chaotic disasters? They weren’t friends the last time he checked…
He shook his head to get rid of the unpleasant thoughts when he reached home. He needed to look better than this. He was going to turn his school-report to his parent, which only contained numerous ‘A’s in a straight line, from top to bottom.
His parents would be proud of him too, like his big brother. Then his father will finally praise him like he does with his brother. However, there was this nagging feeling stirred within him when he finally took a look around…
The place wasn’t how it looked like in the morning. Entering the Uchiha estate’s entrance gates, the first thing he noticed was silence. The lights were also out but it was still too early for anyone going to bed.
Something was wrong…
The Uchihas were famous for their military status, in the country. However, Uchihas had many traits… fearful but useful. And the most fearful and powerful thing among those to be frightened about were their eyes. The famous blood-red eyes with strange two comma like things at corners, Sharingan. But there are rumors that a fully matured Sharingan user would have three commas in the eye, which is called Mangekyo Sharingan. It’s the legendary Sharingan and the ultimate power. Though the power was still unknown and untold to anyone, since no one yet achieved that stage in the Uchiha family.
But something was wrong…
A pair of ruby depths with a black comma like thing in each of them, scanned the area. Yes, it wasn’t the fully matured Sharingan since the user was still inexperience and little, that’s why it had only one comma. Even if everything looked ordinary the feeling growing inside him told otherwise. He quickly ran east and took a turn towards the main house, his home. He kept running until the destruction of his uncle’s shop came into view. His ruby eyes traveled down to meet with a pair of unmoving bodies lying on the ground. Eyes widened and fear shook him when he recognized who those bodies belonged to.
“Uncle?” It was definitely them. “Aunty?”
Something’s wrong…
They weren’t moving and when he looked closely, he saw blood running down their bodies. At first he didn’t want to believe they were dead but he needed to find some help, and fast.
Mom… Dad… Brother…
The thoughts of his family rung through his head and without wasting time he quickly turned towards the main house. Upon entering he didn’t hear his mother’s cheerful voice like he always did. He did not hear his father’s conversation about his day to his mother either. Neither was he welcomed by a surprise flick on his forehead by his big brother.
Something’s too wrong…
“Mom?”
The house was in absolute silent and he could only hear his own voice. He tried the switch but the lights were out in his house too. Not that it was too dark so he quickly began to search for his other family members. Dread was creeping him silently as he made his way to the kitchen then to the living room. No one was anywhere to be found.
“Dad?”
His father was head of the police force and his relatives were working there too, so there was no point to go call someone else for help. But when he found no one at home, he was about to give up and rest a bit… that was when he finally heard a noise from his father’s working area. Turning around he dashed out of the room and went towards the direction of the noise. He stopped dead in front of the closed solid metal doors of his father’s working space. There was blood smeared on the metal handlebars. Fear shook him again. He couldn’t move, he couldn’t breath, he couldn’t think anything rational anymore.
Everyone’s fine… everything’s going to be alright… this isn’t real…
Repeating through his mind to move, move for his own sake, he reached out for the metal handlebars and opened the door wide. Ruby eyes roamed the darkened room where things were easier to be seen, where the moonlight aided his vision freely. His eyes stopped at the big lump on the floor. He didn’t want to know what it was but he didn’t want not to know either. Each step was making it clearer to see there was two unmoving figures lying on the floor. His movement stopped as soon as he noticed a moving figure in the shadows. He stepped back by two steps until the figure revealed himself standing by the open window where the moonlight reflected the most.
“B-Brother?”
His brother is still alive. He was relieved for a second then his eyes settled back to the two lifeless figures on the floor, not noticing the new appearance in his brother’s eyes. His whole body shook with terror again.
He immediately recognized who those bodies belonged to. But his brother was okay and he was going to explain right? He will tell everything was okay, this is just a nightmare. “…B… Brother?” The words choked back in his throat when he noticed the gun held in his brother’s bloody hand. “B-Brother… What… h-happened?”
There was a severe silence for a while and this time the younger Uchiha did notice the three commas in his brother’s eyes, “Foolish little brother.” The elder Uchiha told without breaking the menacing eye contact.
His brother always called him that but not in the tone he just used. When the realization finally sank in his head, he felt lost. “W-Why?”
There was another long silence until the elder Uchiha stated, “You aren't even worth killing.”
Not… worth killing?
“WHY! WHY DID YOU-” he couldn’t even finish speaking as the other cut in.
“If you want to kill me, despise me, hate me, and live in an unsightly way... Run, run and cling to life, and then some day, when you have the same eyes as I do, come before me.”
Was this… a dream? Nightmare can be more appropriate word to describe.
The terrified younger Uchiha shook his head.
This can’t be happening… This CAN’T be happening to him!
This wasn’t fair…
This wasn’t fair…
Tears continued to stream down his cheeks as he looked up to see his brother turn away and leave.
~END OF DREAM FLASHBACK~
… and that wasn’t fair either… a little voice whispered to him.
To be continued…
