IV

Note: So am I the queen of taking forever to update, or what? Almost another year since the last chapter. So, anywho. Once again, those that stuck with this story, this goes out to you. I am in the swing of this so I’m going to keep going.

This chapter took five different versions to come up with. It's crazy short. Hope you enjoy it. Tell me what you think.

To say that his time in a holding cell was comfortable would be a lie. The three by three foot cell was designed to be suffocating. Sasuke was use to that. Cells like this weren’t unique to Konoha. What it came down to was a mind game. No windows screwed with your sense of time, the close quarters your depth perception which all lead to self induced cjolsterphobia. It wasn’t anything special. Sasuke was actually a little disappointed. The weak seal had been interesting--something new. This was just too easy.

The instant he had been left in cell he had sat down on the floor. Crossing his legs he easily began to meditate. He could do this for weeks if it came down to it. He let his mind wonder freely letting the events that led him here slip in and out. The new seal the had fitted him with was indeed perfect. He went through the process of testing it. It really was brilliant. Sasuke was curious to know who had engineered it. People had certain signatures when it came to seals. Everyone did things differently; focused on certain aspects, favored certain signs, learned from someone else. This was delicate and flexible. Sasuke seriously doubted it was Kakashi’s doing. Kakashi favored a strong sturdier method.

Sasuke was drawn from his revery by the quiet echo of footsteps. Sasuke opened his eyes as the person stopped in front of his cell. He watched as the figure opened his cell. Sasuke stood gracefully up and held back a sigh as his seal was checked over. When the man was satisfied he nodded. Sasuke had to stop himself from flinching when three other men appeared out of the darkness. He hadn’t felt them at all. His curiosity about his seal was instantly renewed. But before he could contemplate it anymore he was roughed pushed out of the cell. He had to hold back a snort, childish. He fallowed behind two of them while the other two followed.

Sasuke was surprised to be led out of the underground cells and towards the exit. They stopped next to a desk to pick things up. Sasuke stood blinking rapidly to try and let his eyes adjust to the brightness. He nearly jumped out of his skin when someone came up behind him and placed something over his bound wrists to cover them. He turned to look at the person and frowned. It was a woman who looked to be about his age. She looked familiar but Sasuke couldn’t place her name. Well, first name at least, last name was easy. She seemed to notice this and offered a small smile. Tilting her head to the side which made her long dark hair sway softly.

“Hinata,” She said softly but very surely. Sasuke’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. He remembered the annoyingly meek girl who could barely talk with out stuttering and blushing from the Chuunin exams all those years ago. It was hard to believe this clearly self-assured woman was one in the same.

Sasuke didn’t know what to say. He had never really known her. Something in him twisted. This was the part he hadn’t been prepared for. Locked in a cell for the rest of his life was easy. Naruto’s words suddenly made sense. He had been right after all, killing him would have been a cop out. Over and done with and then swept under the rug with the rest of Konoha’s mistakes. But this? Having to face the very people that he had hurt the most? This was indeed a fitting punishment. Sasuke couldn’t stop the small fond smile that tugged his lips as he thought about it.

“Unexpected as always,” He said more to himself then the woman in front of him but she smiled as well.

“Somethings never change” She replied sagely. Sasuke blinked, taken aback that she had been able to follow at least the direction of his train of thought. They stared at one another for a minute in complete understanding. It had been two decades since Sasuke had made a connection like this. Again, Sasuke didn’t know what to say.

He was saved from the silence by one of the guards approaching them.

“Hyuuga-san?” He asked, not sparing a glance for Sasuke,

“Right. Ready Sasuke?” She asked with a concern that he did not deserve. Sasuke nodded and followed after the two men he had before. Hinata followed a step behind him as the six of them made it out the door.

Sasuke let his eyes wander for a brief moment. Beholding Konoha again for the first time in so very long. This time, however. The eyes that followed him weren’t full of blind adoration, but out of disgust.

He wondered briefly, if this is how Naruto had felt but shook that thought from his mind. No. Naruto hadn’t deserved it, Sasuke did. And a voice in Sasuke’s head wondered if maybe, he always had.
