Nothing to say except sorry for the long wait on the update, my computer is being real evil to me. When I tried to show it love by upgrading it, it showed it's destain by totally crashing. I had to go to other one which is slower and prone to cutting you off in the middle of your conversations i.e. pushing me off the internet. Since i type my updates on the site it has been a tad problematic. But to make up for it I will be making this an extra long update. I hope my numb fingers and broken fingernails will be enough of a penance for you. By the way the pairings game is still open and if you have one please don't feel bashful about putting their dicks (or asses) on the table.

confess that I love jealous possessive Sasuke. About the
flashbacks some of them are necessary but I will try to
intergrate them better in the story (please let me know
if it works). Also there will be hints (and possibly
more) of the pairing you asked about. Don't worry about
your mind because I got to let you know it's not just you
it's me too, so don't feel bad we are in the same boat.

Chapter 3: Hail Mary

The first thing that Sasuke did when he entered his room was to turn and lock the door. Once that task was accomplished he went to the large bay windows. Which he ususally kept open due to the fact that it overlooked the second garden. It filled his room with the scent of jasmine, his mother's favorite flower. Closing and locking the windows he then pulled down the dark blue curtains securing them so not even a sliver of light could be seen. Sasuke looked over the room enclosed in it's false darkness with a tense and secretive air, which was his aim. He realized that he was about to open confidentail police documents and it never hurt to be cautious when dealing with these types of matters.


Dividing all the things that he discovered in to two sections he prioritized all the evidence related to the case and placed it on his bed. Sasuke had looked at the first page in the journal and saw that they were indeed his father's apparently from the time he was seven and assumed kept writing in them until his death. Sasuke had decided that he would keep the journals out if he needed them to help identifying or clarifying some points that might not be included in the evidence. He placed them on the nightstand on the left side of his bed.


Althogh Sasuke had been to young to join in the investigations he had always watched as much of the process as he could. He wanted to be the "greatest" Uchiha in the history of the Konoha Police Force, especially since Itachi had already gotten the title of the youngest Uchiha to join the anbu.


Meticiously he organized everything that he thought might be needed like extra scrolls for storage and writing utensils that he placed on the bed for taking notes. On the nightstand to right he placed the electron microscope, fingerprinting and dusting kits, as well as paper for testing for the presence of different chemicals.Being around the familiar tools of his father's trade he realized how much he was enjoying his tasks even thought they were routinue investigation procedures.


"It's been so long that I had forgotten that being a policeman was what I had always wanted to do". Sasuke reflected momentarily saddened by the realization of how much of himself he had lost to vengence.


Sasuke had always liked solving puzzles and when he was younger he thought that detectives were the ultimate puzzlesolvers. The way they used motive and evidence to create the picture of a crime. How the investigators managed to turn small pieces of evidence, canvassing, and a little brainpower into something like a captured criminal always left him in awe.


When one is an avenger it is not necessary to find clues in order to try and convict a criminal. Since the evidence is already in and the criminal is already been convicted in the eyes of the law. Only a punisher is needed to hand judgement down to the guilty. When Sasuke decided to dedicate his life to avenging his clan he knew his future was limited. That he no longer had a right to have any dreams of his own for tommorrow because when one is an avenger it may never come. That the days before and after that important mission of ending his brother's life was numbered.


Now he was being given not only the chance to live out his dream, but help maintain his clansmen reputation as great detctives. The village will once again talk about the greatness of the Uchiha clan. Only this time he will not just be one of many, or even the last Uchiha but the one and only Sasuke Uchiha solving the unsolveable.


Although Uchihas for the most part need no one sasuke did realize that he would not be able to do all the work alone. That at the very least he would need some assistance. Logically the best person to help with this case would have been Sakura. Since even though she was practically useless on missions she was the with the highest IQ in the academy. Thoise particular skills of hers would have been useful but she lacked focus.


"Or should i say that Sakura is too focused on me to be of any help in this case and will more than likely be a hinderance. Besides I don't want to give her any encouragement by thinking that this my way for us to spend a little more time together without the dobe. As it is if wasn't for him and the fact that we are on the same team because she's so weak I wouldn't acknowledge her anyway."


Plus if he started hanging around her so much it would draw the attention of his other fangirls. They would wonder why their precious Sasuke-kun was singling her out and possibly alert the culprit with the suspious behavior. He wanted to keep the investigation as low profile as he could to catch the criminal unaware. In addition the suspect may have slipped up and told someone something or through carelessness gotten rid of a vital piece of evidence because he thought the was inactive due to the years and the massacre of the clan. His next candidate and the his only pick from the beginning was Naruto.


True he is a loud mouth, jazzerized, attention-seeking dobe. the ninja most likely to bright up your day at night. Naruto's preference for wearing orange clothes always seemed ostintatious and a tad nouve riche to Sasuke. Surprislingly enough or maybe not so surprising he is till Sasuke's best friend and most precious person. Naruto had grit, gut and determination to see whatever goal he set for himself gets done whatever it may be. The first thing that Sasuke noticed about Naruto was his total solitary life with hardly any interaction between him and adults or the kids. Naruto at first only had himself to depend on and Sasuke always acknowledged what courage that really takes. Since it took Sasuke such a long time to get used to it.


Sasuke even had to admit that he wasn't as much of a dobe as he was in the academy. Naruto had improved tremendously on the battlefield since their first mission. The baka is a quick thinker on his feet and many a day has ben saved by his off the hook ideas. Naruto is very inovative when it comes to using his techinqes in different ways, like how he used a wind element jutsu in the water to stop the mist nins when they were trapped underwater while helping that miserable little racer.


"No matter what the dobe has to say, I will never like that guy, he was a totally useless self-important brat", stated Sasuke resentfully. Maybe what he resentd more was the way that the "brat" and Naruto seemed to have bonded by the end of the race.

"Why does everywhere we go the dobe has to pick up strays. He has no sense of self-preservtion and discretion. Why even that kid from our first mission liked him and truly didn't want to harm him. He was an enemy who had the opportunity to kill the baka but didn't." Remembering a time when he thought his life was over but felt no regret because he was protecting Naruto.


"I remember when I saw him as that "girl" who was talking to the dobe when I went to go and fetch him to eat. The way "her" eyes narrowed at me and gave me the evil eye when I walked past her. Who knows what would have happened if I hadn't come to get him."


"Admirers as far as the eye can see and I have the sharigan, so I can see more than the average eye and most of their intentions are not good."


"He picks them up so easily that if I wasn't there who knows what they would do to him since he is a baka. If it wasn't for the fact that he does it unconciously and is naturally friendly, I would think he is doing it on purpose just so the glory hog can grab even more attention."


"The baka does make people change even if they don't want too." Thinking of the way he even made the stoic Uchiha's body move for him when he was in danger. Sasuke acknowledged from then on that no matter how you look at it they were connected. After all the things they have been through together Sasuke knows that he can trust Naruto with his secrets and life even though he would never tell him.


Another unforeseen bonus of working on the case is that he can fix the damage he caused Naruto in his moment of jealousy by asking for his help.


"I wonder how long he is going to act like a baka, when I ask for his help, I can see it now."

"Teme", he'll say in that sickenly sweet voice, batting his eyelashes at me.

"Are you asking for my help, are you sure I mean who would want help from a dobe."

"Certainly not Sasuke "I can do everything perfectly by myself" Uchiha."


And not matter how much I will want to strangle him and how many bowls of ramen I have to buy for him I will do it. This time it is my turn to seek out the blonde and mend our relationship as the blonde has done many times before, even when he it wasn't his fault.


With those thoughts firmly in mind and the evidence in hand Sasuke got down to work. Sasuke had decided to do the prelimary investigation by himself and then he would let Naruto have it to look over to give any differing viewpoints he might have or point out a line of inquiry that Sasuke had not thought about.


The first item that Sasuke decided to look over was the incident scroll which reported the crime and had a yellow seal. That's how Sasuke had first realized that the case was unsolved. If it had been closed the seal would have have been turned black by the investigating officer. Forming a few signs that would break the seal on the scroll, Sasuke was astounded when the seal did not break, it then changed to the Uchiha clan symbol before changing back.


"Now that's strange this is the seals that are used to unlock all the police documents, I know it is", stated Sasuke as he looked perplexly at the innocent scrolls before him.


"They were some of the first signs I learned as a child, I know these signs like the back of my hand so why aren't they working", ponderd the raven.


What was so important that his father found this extra precaution necessary. More than likely it the incident involved someone of importance, and was meant to be destroyed when the case was closed. When he tried to open the other scrolls he met the same problem, not knowing any other seals to use Sasuke was stumped.


"What kind of detective let alone a ninja can't even get the stupid scrolls open. I have been hanging around the dobe to much, this is something he would do", scowled the frustrated raven. Then to complete what he called his "baka Sasuke" moment he threw the scroll against the wall and stuck his tongue out in it's direction. Then he laughed at himself and realized this be why Naruto does it. It was a great help in relieving stress in a tension filled moment and a great opportunity to step back and reevaluate the situation for alternatives.


"I should laugh in the face of failure more often, if nothing else I feel even more confident that I can succeed. Maybe that's why Naruto does it, perhaps he really is an idiot savant in disguise. And his true genius can only be appreciated in retrospect like a time capsule."


With the lingering hints of laughter in his voice Sasuke bent down to retrieve the fallen scroll, which had become snagged on the corner of the carpet. As he popped the loose string with hs finger he cut imself. Annoyed at himself and not wanting to get any blood on the scroll, Sasuke raised his finger to lick the blood away but instead just stared at it. Remembering the flashing Uchiha clan symbol on the scroll.


"That's not supposed to be there when I think about it. The other scrolls I looked at never did that. But they were low-level security scrolls that could be accessed by any officer of the police force. Maybe these scrolls can only be opened by members of my clan, now the only thing is to figure out how."


In his distraction Sasuke forgot all about the blood still beaded on his finger. He touched the seal so he could look at the sides to see if was a clue to opening it when the seal began to change. Instead of returning to the police sel the Uchiha fan appeared again and this time it was glowing.


"A blood seal that's one I've never seen before, well luckily part of the seal has been deactivated, but there is more to it or it would have unlocked." Again trying the hand signs for the unsealing jutsu, nothing happened just the same fan.


"I have never seen a police file that didn't take the standard unsealing before but instead required blood, it's more complicated than I imagined. Looks like I need to look through those journals sooner than i thought, maybe something is written down in there."


"Now here's the tough part do I start from the beginning or do I just try to find the journal containing the approximate year of the case?"


After a little deliberation Sasuke decided to read the journals from the beginning and that way he could find out more about his father, as he tried to find out more about the case.

The next chapter will basically be all from the journal, with some reactions of Sasuke thrown in so hope you are enjoying the story. I will be gone until Novmeber 1 at Yaoicon in San Francisco and hope to see some of you there. I will update when I return.
