More Than Just a Kiss…

Part Four

Gaara fled and Sasuke pursued him into the forest. The fight continued, but it was clear to Sasuke that it would be a battle to the death, and for a few moments it felt as if it would be his death. There was more to Gaara then met the eye and Sasuke was getting a first hand look.

So, where is my idiot boyfriend when I really need him? he thought whimsically. The least that he could do is be here when I die, for god’s sake. Wait. No! I can’t die. Not here, not like this. Itachi! I still need to kill you. I won’t die here, not like this.

Sasuke’s despair turned into determination, but sometimes even determination isn’t enough. Still, he fought on. He used his Chidori again, but it didn’t even seem to faze Gaara this time. Things didn’t look too good for the Uchiha.

Gaara taunted Sasuke unmercifully, mocking him about his supposed friendships, saying that such emotions made a person weak.

No, thought Sasuke. I am not weak. I won’t let these feelings make me weak. If what that idiot told me is the truth, his being with me should make me even stronger. If I believe him, I can do this.

The Uchiha began to gather his remaining chakra, preparing to give up everything, grasping at the slim flicker of faith in Naruto’s words. But it was too much for his seriously chakra depleted body and he passed out before he could complete the technique.

You lied to me, Naruto, was his last thought as he slid into the blackness of oblivion.

Gaara pounced in triumph, prepared to finish off his hated rival, but the timely intervention of Naruto and Sakura prevented him from accomplishing his goal.

Sakura ran to Sasuke, crying and helpless, leaving Naruto to face the enraged Gaara alone.

Some help she is, the blonde thought. ‘Sasuke-kun, Sasuke-kun, Sasuke-kun.’ She’s like a broken record. Why doesn’t she do anything to help, instead of sitting there and crying like a stupid girl, for god’s sake? She’s supposed to be a shinobi, after all. Worthless!

“You’re as worthless as the rest,” Gaara taunted Naruto as he attacked. “You will die like the rest of them.”

“They won’t die,” declared Naruto. “I won’t let you hurt them. I’ll protect Sasuke and Sakura. I’ll give my life before I let you hurt him.”

“Then you’ll die first,” vowed Gaara as he tried to attack Sasuke once more, but Sakura screamed and jumped in front of the fallen Uchiha and Gaara struck her instead, pinning her to a tree.

Naruto took the opportunity she afforded him to grab Sasuke and move him to a secure place. Naruto looked into the still, white face, searching for a sign of life. A flicker of eyelashes sent a wave of relief rushing through his body.

“Sasuke,” Naruto breathed softly, hugging the other to himself for a moment.

Sasuke struggle weakly, trying to escape from the boy that he felt betrayed him.

“… lied,” he mumbled.

“What?” gasped Naruto, shocked at the barely heard word.

“You lied. You said loving you would make me stronger,” whispered Sasuke.

“But it did,” said Naruto, letting the other boy sit up.

“Couldn’t do a third Chidori,” said Sasuke. “That’s not stronger, that’s weak.”

“No. You’re wrong,” said Naruto. “You are stronger. You survived the third attempt, didn’t you? Didn’t Kakashi-sensei say that to try a third one might kill you?”

“Yeah,” Sasuke admitted after a moment, looking away.

“So I didn’t make you weaker,” said Naruto, logically. “I helped you to be stronger.”

“I… I guess,” Sasuke admitted, his tired mind not wanting to try to fathom Naruto’s skewed logic.

“So… so you… you love me?” asked Naruto, hesitantly.

“NO!” exclaimed Sasuke, eyes wide with shock.

“Oh…” replied Naruto, some of the hope in his eyes dying.

“But I do like you… some,” said Sasuke, grudgingly.

“I like you, too, and more than just some,” exclaimed Naruto, and he stole a quick kiss from the Uchiha before the other boy could react.

“So…” said Sasuke, hesitantly, somewhat baffled by what had just transpired and needing to get it back into a perspective that he could wrap his mind around.

“So?” asked Naruto.

“So, show me how strong love can make a person,” Sasuke challenged. “Save Sakura.”

“You got it! I won’t let you down,” Naruto vowed, a silly grin plastered across his face. He gave Sasuke one more quick kiss and then he jumped back into the battle with Gaara.

He said he liked me. I have to do this. I can’t let him down, thought Naruto. I told him that I was his friend and that I would always be there for him. I’ll give up my own life before I break that promise to him.

With all the confidence that he could muster, Naruto successfully summoned the giant frog, Gamabunta, to fight the fully emerged demon that possessed Gaara, Shakuku. After a battle that leveled a good bit of the surrounding forest area, Gamabunta informed Naruto that the only way that they would win would be for Naruto to awaken the sleeping Gaara. Delving deep inside of himself to reach the sealed Kyuubi, Naruto produced a final effort that successfully banished Shakuku.

The sudden disappearance of the demon that possessed Gaara left Sakura in grave peril as the unconscious girl tumbled to the ground. Only the quick reflexes of the somewhat recovered Sasuke kept her from her untimely demise. Laying her down on the ground at the base of the tree to recover, Sasuke went in pursuit of his errant boyfriend.

He found him quite some distance away from where Sakura lie and he could hear Naruto talking to the stunned red-head.

“Why?” asked Gaara. “I don’t understand why you do that.”

“It’s simple,” replied Naruto. “You protect the people you care about most.”

“They make you weak, other people,” declared Gaara.

“No,” disagreed Naruto. “They make life worth living.”

“Why?” asked Gaara, clearly puzzled. “Only killing makes life worth living.”

Sasuke paused, wanting to hear the answer before he let the others know that he was there.

“Killing isn’t the answer. Other people make your life worth living because they care about you,” said Naruto simply. “They recognize you as someone worthwhile and necessary to them. They care for you and you care about them. They’re your friends, your family, your beloved.”

At that moment, Gaara’s siblings stepped forward, ready to dispatch the blonde, but Gaara stopped them, saying that he needed to think about what was said before he killed the other. His siblings were a bit puzzled by his actions, but obeyed his words and they left without further ado.

Sasuke stepped out into the clearing, catching Naruto’s eye.

“Friends. Family. Beloved?” he said, wanting answers as well.

“Yes, beloved. Someone I love above all others,” said Naruto, but didn’t elaborate any further and Sasuke didn’t press him.

The two boys sat quietly, facing each other as long minutes stretched on. Something seemed to silently pass between them.

“You really mean all that stuff that you said?” Sasuke finally asked.

“All of it. I would give my all to protect the people I care most about,” declared Naruto.

Sasuke nodded and stood, but suddenly found himself weak with exhaustion. He wobbled a bit, then started to fall, but Naruto was there to catch him, holding him close in a warm embrace. Arms wrapped around the tired Uchiha, he looked into dark, almost unreadable eyes and seemed to find what he was looking for.

Naruto gently lowered his lips to Sasuke’s and kissed him softly for a minute before Sasuke started to respond. Lips moved against lips, tongues caressed each other and warmth spread throughout clinging bodies. Finally, needing air, Naruto pulled back and looked into Sasuke’s eyes once more before speaking.

“Come on,” he said, smiling gently at the other. “Let’s find Sakura and then let’s get you home so you can rest.”

Sasuke smiled shyly back and Naruto’s heart beat contentedly. This was the first genuine smile that he had ever gotten from the dark-haired boy, and he was determined that it wouldn’t be the last. Slowly, ever so slowly, he was winning the heart of the Uchiha.
