The Nine-tails

Hours later, Jiraiya and Tsunade had sent Murasaki out of the room, due to Kushina’s labors. The ground was still shaking due to the kyuubi, it’s hatred growing stronger and stronger through the walls.

After what felt like an eternity of sitting on the floor in the hallway, waiting for news, any news at all, the door opened. Jiraiya came out, clutching a small bundle to his chest.

“Murasaki…I have a mission for you…” He said, passing the sleeping baby into her arms. “I need you to take him to Kakashi…”

Murasaki stared up at him, her eyes wide. “What about Kushina-sama?”

Jiraiya sighed, shaking his head. “Having babies is hard work…combined with the stress of the kyuubi attack…” She could hear the emotion in Jiraiya’s voice. She looked down at the baby, who felt heavy in her arms. He looked so peaceful, his dark-lashed eyes closed and a fuzz of golden hair poking out beneath the blanket.

“Don’t be afraid, Murasaki…” Jiraiya said, smoothing her hair. “Just be careful…”

Muraskai nodded, clutching Naruto to her chest and running out.

It was already dark, the moon was high and full. The air was thick with smoke and debris, the screams of people filling the night and sending chills down her spine. A piece of flying debris sailed towards her, landing where she had stood moments before. The normally peaceful village was now almost unrecognizable. It looked like the ruins Hiroshima.

Shielding her eyes, she cast them upwards towards the forest. Minato had lured the demon away from the village a little. In the dusky moonlight, she could make out the nine tails over the trees. As she drew nearer, she could hear the shouts of shinobi and kunoichi alike, the ANBU captains giving orders to each other. Murasaki looked around for Kakashi’s slender form as she darted through the trees quietly. She almost ran smack into a dark haired man in a long black cloak with red clouds on it.

“S-sorry…” She stuttered, going to move around him, but he stopped her.

“Now what’s a pretty little girl like you doing out here with a baby…” He said, crouching down. In the shadows, Murasaki could barely make out his face. He was almost ageless, neither old nor young. He had dark eyes and a fair complexion. She could tell right away he was an Uchiha.

“I…I have to go…” She said, moving away. He had massive amounts of hateful chakra, much like the kyuubi’s… The man stood up, his features crossed by a frown.

“Oh? And where are you going? Certainly you’re not hoping to fight the kyuubi?”

Murasaki shook her head, clutching Naruto’s form to her chest.

There was a sudden flare of red light and a defining roar behind them, Murasaki took this opportunity to escape from the mysterious Uchiha. She took off, using her chakra to leap into the trees.

“Hey! Hey kid!” She heard someone call to her. Murasaki didn’t stop, her heart racing wildly. Suddenly, she was surrounded by ANBU. Murasaki stopped, shifting her grip on Naruto.

“I need to find Hatake Kakashi-san.” She said before they could ask her questions. Naruto stirred, but didn’t wake.

“You’re the Sanin’s kid?” A man with dark hair said, stepping forward. Murasaki nodded. “What’s up with the kid?”

“I..I have orders to bring him to Yondame…” She said quietly.

“Order’s from who?”

“My father…Jiraiya…” She said, shaking slightly. Behind them, the kyuubi reared back, it’s tremendous roar shaking the ground. Naruto woke, screaming loudly and flailing his tiny fists.

“Very well. Come with me.” The captain said, leading her through the trees. Murasaki struggled to keep up with the man, who was apparently, holding back. Soon, they arrived at a clearing where med-nin’s were healing the wounded.

“Stay here.” he barked. Murasaki nodded, obeying and looking around.

She could hear frantic screaming drawing closer over the snarling of the kyuubi and the crying of Naruto.

“No! I can’t fight! Mom! Dad!”

She could see two men hauling a young boy from the sight of the battlefield. It was Iruka. His face was covered in blood, but he continued to fight against the men.

“Iruka!” Murasaki shouted above the den. There was a red flair as the kyuubi breathed a fire-like substance. Naruto wailed, louder, if possible. Iruka stopped fighting for a moment, looking at her.

“Murasaki! Tell them I can fight! Tell them!”

Murasaki shook her head, backing away in dismay. She nearly backed into Kakashi.

“I was told you were looking for me? What’ the emergency?” His eyes fell on the baby in her arms and realization hit him. He widened his eyes for a moment, then nodded, almost sadly.

“Come with me.”

The ANBU captain stopped him.

“What are you doing? Taking a someone and a baby onto a battlefield?”

“Orders from Yondame-sama.” Kakashi said, grabbing Murasaki by the hand and dragging her towards the battle zone. Murasaki felt fear consume her. The force of the Kyuubi’s chakra weighing heavily on her shoulders. She could feel it’s impurity, it’s hatred and anger draining her physically. She clutched a screaming Naruto to her chest as she followed Kakashi through the treetops.

“Come on…” He said impatiently, leaping onto the back of a giant toad that was clashing with the kyuubi. Murasaki swallowed hard and leapt, using her chakra to keep her in place as the giant toad reared back, thrusting a sword at the kyuubi, which dodged the blow with surprising speed. Of course, Jiraiya had told Murasaki about Gama Bunta. On the Toad’s head, she could see Minato, his white cloak flowing freely in the wind.

“Minato-sama…” She called as she and Kakashi drew near. Minato glanced back at them and turned, coming towards them.

“Naruto…” He whispered, taking the baby from her and looking deeply at it. Naruto seemed to stop crying and look up at Yondame with azure-eyed wonder. Minato smiled sadly. “He’s so perfect…” He said, kissing his son in the forehead and cradling him to his chest. He turned to Murasaki and Kakashi. “Kakashi, take Murasaki and get to safety… and Murasaki…tell Kushina that I will never stop loving her…” He said, clearly choking back tears as he handed Murasaki a letter. “Give this to your father.“ He turned and made his way back up to the top.

“Come on…” Kakashi said, taking her hand as the Kyuubi let out another earth shattering scream. They paused in a tree nearby, stopping to watch. Murasaki visibly shook with fear, clinging to the tree. Kakashi watched as there was a blinding flash and an ear-piercing whistle like a firecracker, only magnified a thousand times.

The shockwave was enough to shake the tree violently, nearly toppling it as the wood split and cracked beneath them. Kakashi put his arms around Murasaki, shielding her from flying debris. She could feel the dampness of tears on her neck…Kakashi was crying. She could feel her own eyes burning as she clung to him desperately. After the explosion, there was nothing but a ringing silence and dead calm as leaves and other fragments rained down from the sky. Murasaki was still trembling when Kakashi let go of her, looking away to wipe his eyes. Her thoughts strayed to the little baby that had been at the heart of the explosion…there was now possible way his frail little body could have survived. She closed her eyes, sobbing into her scratched up hands.
