Evolution
They clashed with the clinks of kunai as they bounced backward away from one another.
“Lee, what are you doing? Stop holding back!” shouted Gai.
He sat there glaring at Gai. What am I doing? This is my favorite sparring partner, he thought. He couldn’t bring himself to attempt to land a hit on Gai. Things had inevitably changed.
“Let’s take a break, shall we?” Gai suggested, gathering the tossed shuriken.
Lee silently nodded.
The two walked side-by-side in silence, but this did not go unnoticed as the Hokage approached.
“Whoa! What’s wrong with you two,” she asked exasperated. “Why are you two not racing on your hands to the ramen shop, or something?”
“Good morning, Lady Hokage, Lee and I are just enjoying a break from our morning training. We both must be so exhausted from our recent mission, we did not realize our wandering minds!” Gai attempted enthusiasm.
Lee had flinched at the words “our recent mission.”
The Hokage eyed them both with a raised eyebrow, “Well, take it easy. If you two need to take a break from missions, please let me know. I don’t want any distracted ninja out getting themselves hurt or even killed,” she warned.
“No, no, Lady Hokage! We shall rest and be back at the top of our games by sundown!” Lee said with his infamous smile and thumbs up.
“Ah, that’s a little better. I need you two to check in with me tomorrow first thing.”
They both responded with a nod and “Yes, Lady Hokage.”
As they parted ways, Gai turned to Lee, “We need to talk. Let’s go to my apartment.”
“Okay,” Lee agreed.
After the uncomfortably long walk to Gai’s apartment, the two walked in as Gai went to his tiny kitchen to pour them both some water.
“Listen, Lee, I know things have gotten a little weird since, well, you know, but I don’t want it to be like this!”
“Me neither!” shouted Lee.
“Well, what do you want then? How can we make things right?”
“I want you! I want you to be the only person to take my body… for us to be together!”
Gai took a step back in shock. It wasn’t that Gai had not thought about it, but he was shocked that Lee needed that kind of commitment to feel reassured. His heart melted at seeing Lee so unsure of himself, so unsure of what he meant to Gai. “Okay, then.”
“Really?” Lee asked with tears in his eyes.
“Of course, Lee. I won’t see anyone else, if you won’t either. You will be mine and I will be yours. Okay?”
“O-okay,” he stammered.
“But we cannot let our affections be known. If people were to find out, they might try to separate us from doing missions together. Maybe even go as far as to separate us completely. Affection between two men is greatly frowned upon here,” Gai explained breaking eye contact.
“I understand. I will do anything to protect us.”
Gai smiled, grabbed Lee and passionately kissed him. The way Lee kissed him back, he was reassured that this meant he had his best friend back. Their kiss was both playful and passionate.
“Gai?” Lee asked breaking away from the kiss.
“Hmm?”
“Why are we still in here?” Lee smirked as he took Gai by the hand and led him to the bedroom.
“Lee, what are you doing? Stop holding back!” shouted Gai.
