Chapter 4
He could feel the air in the car and the tension could be cut with a knife. It was really awkward. Neji was his closest friend since Naruto broke up with him (whom he only said ‘hi’ and ‘bye’ to so as not to make things more uncomfortable for all those involved –which was all their friends), but they weren’t that close. Being an Uchiha and a Leo meant he had to have a lot of personal space. His bloody childhood had also added to making him more of a loner and all these things made it near impossible for him to open up to anyone. However, he had opened up to Neji; they were too alike for that not to happen. They had spoken on a very personal level on a few occasions; Sasuke had told him things even Naruto didn’t know, and Neji spoke to him about his personal life, details no one else knew, he was sure. However, he didn’t know he had this much in common with the Hyuuga protégé. And to think the stoic no emotion Hyuuga was such a good kisser, mmm. Sasuke licked his lips just thinking about it and his lips tingled with the memory.
“In a hurry?” Neji asked slightly amused, trying to calm down his increased breathing and racing heart just staring at the Uchiha, thinking, ‘this is not going slow’. They were headed to the Uchiha’s house, but the speedometer of Sasuke’s car was increasing, and fast.
“What?” Sasuke asked as though snapping back to reality. Neji pointed to the speedometer—they were going 80 miles an hour and Sasuke’s house was only a few miles away.
“Oh.” Sasuke acknowledged, trying to stop the blush that crept on his cheeks. Neji thought he looked cute.
‘Wait—cute?’ Neji thought surprised.
‘Well, yes. Actually, he looks hot.’ A part of his brain answered him. His eyebrows drew together.
‘What the hell? I’m answering my own question now?’
Sasuke snapped out of his self induced confusion.
“So what do you wanna do? We can always watch a movie.” Sasuke suggested trying to break the ice. He really didn’t know why he was behaving so awkwardly. Neji had been over to his house countless times—now was no different.
‘Okay yes it is different: I just made out with my closest friend and I’m having fantasies of jumping him the second we get through the door.’ Sasuke thought strangely calm. The little guilt he felt was overridden by the sound of his blood singing through his veins in anticipation of the likely chance that he was going to kiss Neji again.
They made it to Sasuke’s house in record time: less than ten minutes; not nearly enough for the ride to be too awkward, as they were lost in their own thoughts. If Neji was honest with himself (which he wasn’t, knowing he couldn’t show emotion on the outside and denied emotions inside as well) he would tell himself he was nervous. Nothing would change between them unless they wanted something to change, he finally convinced himself firmly.
Meanwhile, he had this scary desire to make out with Sasuke again. They both got out of the car and walked up the side walk to Sasuke’s front door. The Uchiha lived alone in the house (more like small mansion) he’d inherited from his parents after the courts took it from Itachi’s hands (as was the latter’s birthright for being first born). His home was a little bare but it looked lived in and perfect for the bachelor. Both men were trying to reign in their desires even though their bodies were trying to jump free of their skins with yearning for the other.
“You want something to eat or drink?” He looked at eh clock above the small table in a corner. “Preferably breakfast.” He said sardonically—it wasn’t yet 8am.
“You can cook?” Neji asked with fake incredulity. Sasuke gave him a Look. The one that said ‘you did not just ask that stupid question’; Neji knew full well that he preferred to eat out rather than cook only for himself—it got lonely in the giant house.
Sasuke smirked and left the taller man into the kitchen telling him to sit at the table. Sasuke went to the refrigerator and began taking out ingredients, but froze.
“Umm...what do you want to eat?” He asked a bit too late, not used to playing host.
“Whatever you’re eating.” Neji said, the manners forced into him rearing their ugly heads even in his friend’s house; he could just hear his uncle’s voice: he was not at a restaurant.
“Hn. You’re eating eggs, bacon and toast—or do you want pancakes?” He asked once more, for some strange reason he did not want to seem overly bossy in front of Neji, even though they both know that’s who he is.
“Whatever is fine. It’s okay, I just want to be fed; I didn’t eat breakfast.” Neji explained.
“I noticed.” Sasuke mumbled, remembering the minty taste of the Hyuuga, sure that Neji wouldn’t ear. He was wrong.
“What?” The brunette asked as though he’s missed something.
“Oh, nothing.” The raven answered flippantly, a little too quickly.
“No, what?” Neji asked insistent on wanting to know, as though the knowledge was somehow trivial. What he didn’t know, aside from what Sasuke said, was that the answer was embarrassing and explaining it would make them both blush—Sasuke was sure of it.
“So, um, you’re good with bacon, eggs and toast right?” Sasuke asked trying to change the subject. Neji was an intelligent man, he knew what Sasuke was up to, but he let the matter drop, giving him a Look that said that they would broach the subject at a later time.
“Sure.” He said humoring the Uchiha, knowing the raven was too hard-headed to give him a straight response.
The two men continued their conversation (on another topic) as Sasuke finished cooking breakfast, both relaxing as though it were any other day. Neji thought it relaxing to watch Sasuke expertly make breakfast; the grace and fluidity of his movements captivating his gaze. The end result was the best eggs, bacon and toast he’d had in a long time, and enjoyed them more so because Sasuke made them.
He broke off that train of thought immediately before he began to panic. Sasuke was a great person, but Sasuke as domestic was just too much. Not only domestic, but Neji envisioned him in his future, doing this five years from now and wanted, craved that picture that an unsupervised part of his mind created. Those type of thoughts scared him—he just found out that he had these feelings for Sasuke (front and foremost lust): he didn’t want to plan out their entire future. His thoughts were interrupted by Sasuke’s yawn.
“When was the last time you had a decent night’s sleep?” Neji asked a little worried, starting to actually notice, really notice, the dark circles around Sasuke’s eyes, dark in contrast with the Uchiha’s pale skin. It almost looked like a paler version of the excessive amounts of eyeliner that Gaara wore.
“Hn. Too long...maybe never... I can’t remember.” Sasuke finally admitted, truly not remembering and knowing that Neji wouldn’t bitch at him like Naruto did. He answered because he felt that Neji should know, not because he felt as though he owed him an answer. He didn’t know the last time he slept a whole night. Maybe before the whole Itachi- family- wipeout incident.
“Didn’t the doctor prescribe sleeping pills?” Neji asked, worry replaced with confusion.
“You know how much I hate doctors, Neji.” Sasuke said, not giving a straight answer.
“You still have nightmares.” Neji said, not really an answer, and by Sasuke’s silence he knew it was true.
“Yes.” Sasuke said very quietly after a long moment, his voice holding the exhaustion of so many sleepless nights.
They stayed silent, the quiet being comfortable rather than awkward, until Sasuke started gathering plates and cups and unceremoniously dropping them in the sink.
“C’mon, lets go watch a movie.” He said grabbing Neji’s hair and tugging lightly, showing the Hyuuga that nothing had changed between them; almost nothing.
Neji sat at the end of the long sofa while Sasuke popped in a DVD. Sasuke turned to sit down only to stop when he noticed the way Neji was sitting; in a corner making himself small. Sasuke raised a brow. Neji had slept over before—he didn’t need to play the polite guest when it was just them.
“Dude, relax. It’s not like I’m going to rape you or anything.” Sasuke said in jest. He realized the mistake of his words when he saw Neji tense up. The Hyuuga forced himself to relax and took of his sneakers, getting comfortable on the couch until his back was resting on the arm and his legs were on the couch. Sasuke mimicked his position on the other side of the couch, their legs tangling in the middle.
Fifteen minutes into the movie Sasuke lost it. His lips had been tingling at the memory of Neji kissing him and his skin seemed to itch and he wanted nothing more than to claim the Hyuuga’s lips again. He crawled over to Neji’s side, straddling the Hyuuga’s lap and began nibbling at his jaw, letting his teeth rake the strong chin, torturing both of them by avoiding Neji’s lips.
Neji had noticed Sasuke’s complete lack of interest in the movie and was actually surprised that it took the raven so long to get over to him. When he did, Neji let him do as he pleased, but only for so long. Losing patience, Neji turned his head, pushing Sasuke’s face aside and began kissing the raven’s neck. He licked the hollow below the ear and nipped the lobe feeling Sasuke’s breath hitch. His breath caressed Sasuke’s ear and he was rewarded with a barely muffled moan from the younger man. He continued giving the sensitive ear attention, his hands firmly grasping the raven’s hips—for balances purposes only, he told himself. It would be awkward if Sasuke fell right then, he tried to convince himself.
Neji nipped Sasuke’s lobe again and was rewarded by a whispered moan. He bit back a groan, delightfully surprised to find that such sexy sounds could come from the ice prince himself. He never knew Sasuke was so sensitive there.
‘Where else are you sensitive?’ Neji wondered, his tongue lightly skimming the raven’s neck, creating a trail of heat that had Sasuke gasping. The raven whimpered when Neji bit down softly where his pulse visibly beat erratically.
‘He tastes good.’ Neji thought almost groaning again.
Sasuke was in a state of shock as his thoughts were being quickly overrun by the impossible heat Neji was creating. He knew he should be thinking something along the lines of ‘Neji’s very talented’ as a loud gasp was torn from his throat and he knew he would be embarrassed, but his brain was screaming ‘don’t stop’ in a mantra and he couldn’t care less. The embarrassment would come later, he was almost at the point of no return and he wanted to feel the other man deep inside him. At this sudden realization he froze. Neji felt Sasuke suddenly tense and froze, pulling back.
“Sorry.” The brunette said, though he didn’t know what he was apologizing for. He could guess though.
“This isn’t taking it slow, is it?” he wondered aloud, his tone teasing. Sasuke huffed out a small laugh, his body losing its tenseness and he rested his head against Neji’s shoulder. At first the man didn’t know what to do with his hands, so he decided, what the hell, he’d done worst, so he wrapped his arms around the Uchiha, pulling him close.
“We’re getting in over our heads aren’t we?” Sasuke mused, burrowing deeper into Neji’s warmth, loving the smell of the others cologne and wanting to swim in his scent, not really realizing how much he’d missed the company of another, a man at that. Neji’s strong arms around him felt like heaven and he felt safe. As though the nightmares couldn’t get to him and Neji would protect him against everything and everyone.
Neji answered with the typical ‘hn’. Being fluent in ‘strong and silent’, having practically invented the language, he didn’t have to respond and he smiled at the meaning in the hum. His smile melted into something softer as his body relaxed further with the vibrations that ran from the Hyuuga’s chest to his body. After a short while, being completely at ease in Neji’s arms, his eyes began to droop. His breath began to even out and Neji was found in another dilemma. He didn’t know if he should wake up the sleeping Uchiha; it wasn’t proper etiquette for the host to leave his guests unattended by falling asleep on them. He looked down at the raven, again noticing the deep circles under lidded onyx eyes that looked almost like bruises. He also noticed how the Uchiha had an almost a death grip on the front of his shirt.
‘He looks so vulnerable.’ The Hyuuga thought, feeling a pang of sympathy as he continued to stare at the pale porcelain features of his friend. How had he never noticed that the Uchiha was so strikingly beautiful? His features were just this side of feminine yet there was a masculinity that was unmistakable. The proud and cold Uchiha was really a beautiful creature that made the most appealing sounds; if you got past all the walls and made his unyielding body melt. Long lashes that graced over blush stained cheekbones; the color added more beauty to him—it made him look younger and more delectable. Neji trailed his eyes over every inch of Sasuke’s face. From the manicured eyebrows to the pale lids that shielded onyx eyes—eyes so dark, like a black hole that sucked you in and didn’t let you go—to the long lashes, the high cheekbones and strong, slightly pointed nose (he was aristocracy) to rest on supple lips. Lips that almost demanded they be kissed. Lips that could drive a man to sin. Much like himself.
Neji looked back on everything he had been brought up to believe and began to realize what a bunch of bull it was. His uncle Hiashi had told him that homosexuality was a sin. He always knew that his uncle was very religious, but he let religion over power his logic and that’s why Neji himself was what most considered atheist. He himself had thought that homosexuality wasn’t in some way normal. Yet in most ancient societies and some that still exist today, homosexuality is a common practice that is almost religious in a way. There is logic as to why homosexuality is performed and encouraged in those cultures and it baffled him that in such an open minded culture like that of America, homosexuality is considered a sin. It made no sense.
He was interrupted from his train of thought as Sasuke stirred in his arms and shivered lightly, mumbling incoherently. Neji tightened his arms around the raven, satisfied that his presence made a smile appear on the Uchiha’s face. Pretty soon, the Hyuuga’s eyes began to feel heavy.
‘I’ll only close them for a while.’
