What Dreams May Come
Chapter Four
Naruto opened his eyes. He knew this place. This was where he had begged and pleaded with the great beast that resided inside him. This was where he had cried uninhibitedly as the reality had sunk in that he would never be given the death he so longed for. This was his inner sanctum, the one place in the whole universe where he could truly be seen.
Now standing before the massive cage that bound the great nine tailed fox to him, Naruto could only stand in shock. His voice deserted him. The great Uzumaki Naruto was at a loss for words. How does one comprehend the loss sanity? How does one ask for an explanation of the unexplainable?
Here in this moment, Naruto could only gaze into the crimson eyes of the creature that had been his only companion for more than a millennia and pray that he had not truly lost his connection with reality. Had what he saw been the truth? Naruto’s fingers gripped the bars, his desperation turned his knuckles white. His last threads of sanity were ripping from his fingers and he hand no where else to turn for answers.
“Kyuubi…” whispered Naruto, now finding his voice after what seemed like an eternity.
‘I know.’ purred Kyuubi, his massive body settling near the bars. His eyes watching even the smallest movements of his host. Naruto’s breath was coming in pants and tiny shudders wracked his body. The being standing in front of him looked small and lost, almost as if he were a child and not someone that had drifted, physically unchanged, through the ages.
“What is going on? I can’t…I need…” asked Naruto. Tears were filling his eyes and running down his cheeks. He needed an explanation. What little grip he had on his sanity felt as if it was slipping with every passing second.
‘Forgive me for this, Naruto.’ said the fox sadly. Truthfully, he had not realized Naruto was so close to the point of no return. He blamed himself for not preparing his host for this. How does one explain the workings of the cosmos to a child that wasn’t ready to hear what was said? A millennia was a mere drop in the bucket to one such as Kyuubi.
“I need…I need to know if that was him. I NEED TO KNOW!” screamed Naruto, falling to his knees before the bars in an all too familiar pose. The broken sobs coming from the boy that was like his own kit humbled him. Kyuubi was beginning to feel his age. The utter defeat in the human kneeling before him tugged at a heart that had existed since the earth was born.
‘I had not realized you would take it so hard, but I suppose that I should have known. You bound your soul to Uchiha Sasuke in such a way that it humbles even one such as myself.’ said Kyuubi as he wrapped a thick read tail around Naruto.
The sobs continued for what seemed like forever. Each whimpering cry, each gasping breath, they showed Kyuubi what he had allowed to happen. To live for so long without half of your soul was, for lack of a better word, torture. The fact that Naruto had maintained his sanity for so long only provided evidence to his internal strength. Kyuubi did nothing but comfort for now. That was all he could do. Explanations could come later. Naruto had to be ready to hear this. Now was the moment of reckoning and this moment would be the turning point of redemption or disaster.
The sobs began quiet and Naruto lifted his tear streaked gaze to Kyuubi. Kyuubi sighed. This would not be easy but Naruto was smarter than anyone ever gave him credit for. He would survive. Now was time to repair what was broken.
“Naruto are you ready to listen to my tale?” asked Kyuubi. Naruto lifted large blue eyes full of pain. The sight tore at Kyuubi’s heart. He should have told him long before but a price had to be paid. Naruto’s suffering was that price. For every gift from the goddess, something needed to be offered.
For the longest time, Naruto simply looked up to the creature. Nodding, Naruto remained kneeling before Kyuubi, awaiting the explanation. Taking a deep breath, the large creature began his tale.
‘Of all the nine beasts, I was the only one gifted with the ability to see the past, present, and future. With such a gift, I became arrogant. What I didn’t take into account, was that I was blind to my own fate.’ began Kyuubi, his crimson eyes watching Naruto for understanding.
The blonde gazed at the caged beast with wide eyes. He looked innocent again. He looked like he had before his soul had been broken. He looked like Naruto. That such a child could maintain his innocence after so long was a miracle in itself.
‘My arrogance was rewarded by my eternal imprisonment inside you. At first, I screamed my rage. How could I not have foreseen such an event. I lost my gift. The strands of fate were hidden from my eyes. As time passed, I was allowed glimpses into the life of my host. I began to feel connected once again to the outside world because of you. When you mated to Uchiha, your happiness was a balm to my own soul. I began to see the strands of fate once again. When I saw his death, I searched every possible scenario for a way to save him and in turn you. There was none. The future may not be written in stone but his fate was.’ said Kyuubi. That wasn’t exactly true, but Kyuubi was determined to make this as painless as possible…for both of them.
Naruto sat unmoving. Kyuubi’s deep guttural voice never wavered as he told his tale. When he said Sasuke’s fate was unchangeable, Naruto froze. How was that possible if the future was fluid and changing? Why was Sasuke unable to be saved? What had Sasuke ever done to deserve death so young?
“Why?” whispered Naruto. “Why was Sasuke taken from me? Why was it his fate to die?”
‘Even I can not say. I am a servant to the whims of fate. For all my power, I have no control over the wheel the great goddess spins.’ answered Kyuubi. ‘The only thing I could firmly predict was the Convergence.’
“Convergence?”
‘What you just witnessed was the Convergence. It is where all the unfinished threads of fate meet.’ answered Kyuubi. When Naruto remained silent, the fox continued.
‘I kept you from death because fate was cruel to you. I could not let you die in such a state. I foresaw this and knew that you deserved this chance at happiness.’ said Kyuubi. ‘This second chance is my gift to you for healing me.’
“Gift? My life of nothing was a gift?” ground out Naruto. Anger flashed in those expressive sapphire eyes. It was expected. Kyuubi didn’t deny that Naruto had to suffer., but the end justified the means, didn’t it? He was correcting his mistakes of the past.
‘The price of your immortality was to live without Sasuke for a millennia. No other offering would have been accepted.’ answered Kyuubi. There was another option but one that Kyuubi would not have ever considered.
“I never asked to live forever.” whispered Naruto “I would have been happy to live out my life in Sasuke’s arms.”
‘So you are saying you would give up a second chance with Sasuke? You would have rather only had the fifteen years than a chance at a lifetime together?’ asked Kyuubi. His teeth flashed in the darkness of the room. Even his anger was rising. Ungrateful brat. Why could he not be happy with what he was being offered?
Naruto lowered his eyes. He couldn’t answer that question. He was angry but at the same time he was happy. A chance he had only hoped for in the most secret part of his heart was being offered to him on a silver platter. A chance to be with Sasuke again. He really was a fool to deny that he wanted this chance.
“You never answered me. Is that him?”
Naruto looked up into the ancient eyes with such need and hope that even Kyuubi felt he could become lost in those beautiful blue eyes. That such an insignificant creature had the power to humble him with such a look was beyond amazing. Now he was ashamed of his anger towards the blonde. Naruto truly was the number one person at surprising people.
‘His soul is the same. He has no concrete memories of his life with you save those that come to him in his dreams.’
Naruto’s body went limp against the bars. Tears flowed from blue eyes, this time not in pain but in joy. His Sasuke was here. It didn’t matter if he didn’t remember Naruto. Their souls were joined. Just to be near him. Just to hear the sound of his voice was enough.
‘Can you love him again? Is it worth trying to win him again?’ asked Kyuubi, though he already knew the answer. Naruto’s smile was radiate. The smile alone brought sunshine into his dark prison. ‘It was worth it.’ thought Kyuubi.
“It doesn’t matter. Sasuke is Sasuke. If his soul is the same, then it is Sasuke. I don’t care if he cant remember me. I need only to be by his side.” whispered Naruto.
His heart was pounding with the need to return so that he could look on the face of his most precious person. To be given this chance. It was a dream and a fantasy all made reality. Then the realization hit. What about the others, Sakura, Sai, and the rest of the people that had been engraved on his soul as precious? Why were they here?
“Kyuubi, why are the others here?” asked Naruto, the confusion in his eyes evident.
Kyuubi’s rumbling laughter echoed through the prison. Naruto really was an interesting creature.
‘Took you long enough to remember them.’ laughed Kyuubi.
“Hey!” pouted Naruto, his lower lip poking out ever so slightly.
‘You were the center of their world. Did you think Sasuke was the only thread that was connected to you? It seems, in this case, all threads lead to Uzumaki Naruto. An interesting turn of events, don’t you think? You were precious to them. When your thread was pulled away, they, in turn followed. It really is an amazing phenomena, how you so easily tie people to you.’ he purred.
Naruto ran through his mind the words that Kyuubi had spoken. His mind was spinning. To have this chance again. To be allowed happiness after so long. ‘Thank you for not waiting, Sasuke.’ Naruto thought to himself. Then reality hit. Sasuke didn’t know him. He was a stranger to him. This Sasuke felt no love or affection for him. Naruto slumped against the bars.
“I don’t know where to begin.” whined Naruto as he slid down the cage to sit on the floor.
‘Hmph, well you can start by getting off your ass and waking up. Follow your heart. That’s what you will do anyway. A city isn’t built in a day. His mind may not remember you but his soul does.’ snorted Kyuubi and with those final words, shoved Naruto from his mind and into awareness.
Naruto groaned as he was plunged into awareness. His eyes fluttered as he tried to remain conscious. Kyuubi was so mean to have rudely forced him from his own mind. He would have words with him later about that. This was his body after all.
Naruto’s eyes opened and kneeling beside where he lay on the ground was Tsunade. His breath caught in his throat. Though he knew she would see him as a stranger, he couldn’t help but be happy to see the face of the woman that had treated him like a brother. Was he really so precious to her that she had found him again? How many other faces from his past would he meet?
“Hey, kid? Are you alright?” asked Tsunade.
“I’m fine, baa-chan. Just needed a nap.” grinned Naruto. He was unable to resist the use of the ‘endearment’.
“What did you call me, you little runt?” she screamed. It was so like before that Naruto almost burst into tears. How could it be so like before?
Sasuke stood to the side of the room. He watched the blonde with interest. There was something about him that pulled at Sasuke. It was almost like déjà vu. He knew he had never met the man before but for some reason he felt connected to him. It was confusing. When he had seen the blonde collapse, he had been on his feet catching the man before he could hit the ground. For some reason, it had felt right to hold him in his arms. The whispered ‘Sasuke’ from the blonde as he collapsed had caused Sasuke’s heart to stutter. That in itself startled the raven haired boy. Who was this man that could pull such feeling from him just by being there?
Why did he feel this connection? He couldn’t restrain the smirk that tugged at his lips as he watched the antics of two blonds in front of him. The scene seemed so familiar and yet strange at the same time. His mind drifted. The sight of a bright blue eyed boy dressed in eye catching orange flickered on the edge of his mind. Where the hell did that image come from?
“Owwww.” screamed Naruto, clutching his head in pain. The sound brought Sasuke back from his thoughts. The big breasted woman was standing over him with fist clenched while Naruto whimpered in pain.
“That’s what you get, you brat. Next time, show some more respect to the person that stops to help you.” snarled the woman before she stomped the classroom.
“Why is she always so mean?” whimpered Naruto. Sasuke had to smirk at the whining tone. Before Sasuke could reply, Sakura chimed in.
“Hey, no professor yet. Does that mean we can leave now?” she asked.
“Heh, about that. I suppose I should introduce myself. Uzumaki Naruto, pleased to meet you. I will be teaching this class.” said Naruto, bringing his hand up to rub the back of his neck. His eyes locked with Sasuke. The look was so intense that Sasuke had to fight down the blush that was threatening to spread across his cheeks.
Naruto grinned. He still had it. He’d bet he was the only one to notice the extremely faint blush stealing across Sasuke’s high cheek bones. Try as he may, Sasuke had never been able to resist that look. Turning his attention back to the class, he supposed he should begin weaving together all those severed strands.
“Eh? You are the professor?” she yelled, eyes wide.
“What’s wrong with me being the professor?” asked Naruto.
“Well for one you are too good looking. Aren’t professors supposed to be old?” said Sakura.
“I heard that professors’ dicks wither away from all the blood flow being diverted to their brain.” piped in Sai, without looking up from his sketch pad.
“I’ll have you know that my dick is in perfectly fine working order.” growled Naruto as his eyebrow began to twitch.
“Prove it. Prove you aren’t dickless.”
Naruto growled an almost feral sound. The room got very quiet. Naruto was a stone’s throw from pouncing on Sai and showing him exactly where he could shove that comment. ‘I can’t kill him. I can’t kill him.’ was chanted through Naruto’s head. Sai just smiled and went back to his sketch.
“Well, umm, I suppose we should introduce ourselves.” Naruto said to the classroom, having gotten control, at least temporarily, over his emotions. They may have different pasts, but Naruto knew them all. The soul didn’t change. It was just his job to help their souls remember him.
“Me, me, me! I will go first!” exclaimed Lee, nearly bouncing out of his seat in his expression of ‘youthful’ vigor.
“My name is Rock Lee. My greatest dream is to follow in the footsteps of my teacher, Gai-sensei.” said Lee, his fist clenched in determination. Definitely no change there, thought Naruto. He only prayed that Lee didn’t bust out the spandex. Naruto stifled the shudder when he remembered the Green Beast of Konoha and his apprentice.
And so it began. Naruto, however, was only half-way listening to the introductions. His whole being was focused on Sasuke. He knew Sasuke was watching him as well. It was as if they were connecting.
“Sasuke-kun. What about you?” smiled Sakura.
“My name is Uchiha Sasuke. There is very little I like and even more I dislike. I’m here to study, not to be distracted by petty annoyances.” said Sasuke with a hard glance towards Sakura, who had slid her desk even closer to him.
Naruto almost burst out laughing. It sounded so like something Sasuke would have said in the beginning. It appeared that Sasuke would have been a cold bastard regardless of Itachi‘s influence on his personality. Well, that wasn’t completely true. He had really changed in the years they were together. He had lost that ingrained superiority. In the end, they had just been Sasuke and Naruto.
Naruto smiled. This was a new start for both of them. Naruto made a promise to himself. He would hear Sasuke laugh again, no matter what. Naruto never broke a promise. That was his ninja way after all.

~Thank you for the Reviews~
satterb Thank you. I am surprised that so many people seem surprised by the fact Naruto is teaching the class. I thought it was obvious but I guess that’s because I am the creator. I hope you continue to enjoy the story.
Akiru chan Yea I like reincarnation fics but there are so few worth reading. I hope you keep on enjoying this.
nm1716 Glad you are enjoying it and I will try to be consistent with my updates.
bluegirlami21 yea, I really liked the flashbacks. Naruto will have a lot to do to win Sasuke again. I have faith in him ^.~
sharingan.swirllol I think about this story all the time. I think about what I want to do with the characters ect. I am glad that you are enjoying it so much.
NicklesYes I think he was close to the breaking point. I think Naruto would be the only one that could have survived such a trial. I don’t think any of the other characters would have it in them to make it so long.
prima well it’s the plan that Sasuke will have dreams about Naruto but he wont be able to decipher them…yet. Keep reading to find out more.
Pixie well I hope to keep you grinning =p.
ZN18 Wow why is everyone surprised? I thought it was kinda obvious after the first chapter that at least Sasuke would be in the class and you can’t have Sasuke and not bring out the others. I hope you keep reading.
HalskrThank you for the kind words. I’m funny about flashback stories as well. But for some reason, flash backs seemed to fit in my mind for this story. I’m glad I didn’t fuck them up =D
Ken I try to never write crap. There are a lot of talented authors out there but they always take either a month to review or they stop writing right after you get hooked on the story. I would hope my reviewers would let me know if my stories started to suck.
Leeana69 OMG I am so honored that you added me to your recommended reading and after only three chapters. Thank you so much. I only hope that I can continue to live up to your expectations.
Nikana Yea kinda but instead of everyone getting reborn I tweaked it a little. I hope I didn’t go too far off in left field with this chapter. Thanks for reading and I hope you continue to enjoy.
goodchoas well I have something similar to what you said but not quiet. You will have to stay tuned to find out what it is.
