Chapter 4
Thanks so much to my betas Midnight Essence and Moodysavage! I've been having trouble with the uploading page (got angry after it didn't work several times and ended up pouting for a day), but it's working now hopefully (fingers crossed). I love all of my reviews so much and I'm so glad someone is enjoying the story. Thanks so much to all my readers and especially those that took the time to let me know. Now on to the new chapter!
AN: I don't live in San Francisco, but my much older brother did for most of my youth and I spent 3 weeks there every summer for I think 12 years. Even though it's not the best pizza, The Round Table was the most fun and held the best memories for me as a kid hanging out with my brother so I threw it in for nostalgia more than anything. I always loved my time there and enjoyed all the new and interesting things to see. I don't think I ever lost the tourist in me when I was there, but I got to know the city well enough, I think, to write it ;) Chapter 4 Sasuke was leaning against his car when Shikamaru pulled them in to park. Naruto had thanked him about twenty times on the short drive for being such a good friend. Shikamaru finally had to tell him to shut up to get him to stop. Naruto had smiled the rest of the way back. He felt Shikamaru pull him into a hug and he gladly melted into it. “We really need to talk. I don’t know what’s going on, but I just want you to be careful. He’s a dangerous man. I don’t want to see you get hurt. ” Naruto nodded into his shoulder and then leaned back. They got out of the car, and Naruto made his way slowly to Sasuke while Shikamaru went up stairs. “Hey.” Naruto said as he came to a stop in front of Sasuke. He hadn’t looked up at him yet, and Naruto wondered why he was even here if all he was going to do was break up with him. He didn’t think they could break up, that would mean they were together and as far as he knew they weren’t. “My brother is a bastard. He won’t bother you again.” Naruto nodded and moved to lean against the car beside him. Sasuke looked up then. His eyes were blank. His face was pale and stiff as if he was prepared for Naruto to say something horrible to him. It made Naruto feel guilty. “It hurt me. I’ve been judged my whole life by people that knew nothing about me. I left because I wanted to start a new life, not restart the old one. I’ll understand though if you don’t want me now. You had to have known I wasn’t good enough for you, I work in a coffee shop and I live in a tiny apartment in Japantown with two roommates.” Sasuke was in front of him so fast Naruto jumped. He gripped Naruto’s arms tight and squeezed, his face was controlled fury. “I’ve never met anyone like you before. Everyone seems to know who I am and they all want something from me, but not you. When you look at me you see me, and I need that. My name is just a detail that I didn’t want you to know because I didn’t want you to judge me. “I live apart from my family. I am my own master now, and I can make my own choices, but they still want to control me so they harass me sometimes, that’s all, I’ll never go back to that life again. I don’t care what you did or where you’re from. It’s who you are that makes me want you.” Sasuke kissed him, just a gentle caress of lips, then he stepped back and let go of Naruto. He walked around to the driver’s side and opened the door. Naruto turned to look at him. He was confused, but didn’t have the nerve to ask anything right then. “I’ll give you some time to think about it, but I’d like to see you Monday. I’ll pick you up early. You can ask me anything you want then.” Naruto nodded, and Sasuke slid into the driver’s seat. Naruto was still standing on the sidewalk long after the car had vanished down the street. ooOOoo Naruto got home from work Sunday evening at the usual time and went hunting for Shikamaru when he came through the door. He found him napping on the kitchen counter, his head resting on one of his books. He was studying Biochemical Engineering, and every time he talked about any of it Naruto had a very hard time staying awake so he understood why Shikamaru was asleep. Naruto had asked him once why he was studying it if he was so bored. He’d said he wanted to go into pharmaceuticals and develop drugs and he needed this degree to do that. Naruto thought it was stupid that a genius like Shikamaru needed a degree to be able to work, but he’d said it was a necessary evil of society today. On the bright side, he already had a job lined up at a research facility here in San Francisco that did gene therapy research for Cancer. He already worked an internship there over the summer, and they were eager to have him. He shook the sleeping man’s shoulder to wake him up, and grinned when he noticed a puddle of drool on the book. “Whaaat.” Shikamaru said as he yawned and stretched. He looked down and grimaced at the puddle and wiped at the smear on his cheek. He looked up at Naruto and noticed his silent laughter. “Well don’t just stand there. Get me a paper towel.” Naruto did, and didn’t even try to hide the laugh this time. “I’ve never seen you study before, don’t tell me they actually taught you something you can’t understand.” Shikamaru rolled his eyes. “I’m reading the chapter that my professor skipped. He said we’d need to know it for our final so I thought I’d just get through it now, but I read half the chapter and already knew all of it so I got bored and fell asleep. I’m gonna have to get through the rest just in case there’s something I haven’t seen before, but not right now. How was work?” Naruto smiled and dug some ramen out of the cabinet. “Fine… quiet.” He put water in a pan and set it to boil. “I was wondering if you knew anything about someone named Itachi…” Naruto saw Shikamaru’s back stiffen and for a moment Naruto thought he might lie. “Why do you want to know about him?” He asked, his voice cautious and guarded. Naruto shrugged and started tearing the packages open and pulling out the seasoning packets. “He talked to us last night; I just wanted to know who he was.” “No wonder Uchiha looked so shaken last night.” Naruto gave him a sidelong look and asked, “Uchiha?” Shikamaru quirked an eyebrow, “Tell me you didn’t sleep with him without even knowing his name.” Naruto blushed and turned back to his ramen, and Shikamaru buried his face in his hands. “Shit Naruto, you don’t have any idea what you’ve gotten yourself into do you? Sasuke Uchiha is a dangerous man. Itachi Uchiha is his brother and he’s a cruel calculating psychopath without a conscience. Stay away from Itachi or you’ll end up dead.” “It’s not like I chose to see him, he drove up and parked beside us while we were walking through the city. He accused me of being with Sasuke for the money.” Shikamaru laughed. “I don’t even think he’s worth the money…” He mumbled. “Don’t worry about him. If that’s the best insult he could come up with on you, you’re good. What you have to worry about is Sasuke. If he gets too attached then Itachi might get jealous and that could be bad for your health. He’s always been a little more interested in Sasuke then I thought was healthy. Just as long as it stays casual, meaning you don’t move in or go to work at Gamer then he’ll probably ignore you.” “Gamer?” Naruto asked. “Do you talk at all or do you just make eyes at each other and fuck?” “Shika! Of course we talk… we just don’t talk a lot about ourselves. He’s very quiet most of the time actually. I do most of the talking.” Shikamaru just shook his head. “I know this is all new to you, but usually people get to know each other first, and then they sleep together. He seems to like you though. I don’t ever remember him even looking at someone much less speaking to them in school. “Gamer is a video and computer game company that makes RPG’s. His first game was about his brother. It came out about three years ago. It made him enough money to buy out his investors so he owns the company lock stock. “Needless to say, Itachi wasn’t thrilled and it caused a lot of hostility between them. The worst part was when one of Itachi’s goons went after Sasuke without telling anyone. The goon ended up in the morgue and Sasuke severed all ties with his family thinking Itachi had sent him. Itachi does seem to love his brother. Having Sasuke walk away like that was hard on him. He went on a rampage. Anyone that said anything against Sasuke ended up in the hospital or worse. “Itachi ended up spending six month in lock up as a flight risk while he was tried for triple murder. He was acquitted, but everyone knew he did it. It was a rival of Itachi’s that was in the game too. Sasuke made them very accurate, even their facial features. They put out a hit on Sasuke, and Itachi went crazy. They were found in pieces. It took ages to figure out what weapons were used because the wounds were so varied. It said in the papers that the victims were tortured for days. “That’s why you don’t have anything to worry about from anyone else. If you make Sasuke happy and you don’t try to come between them, Itachi will kill to keep you safe. I’ve heard that Sasuke still doesn’t speak to his family unless they initiate it, and even then he’s barely civil. It would probably be better to talk about it with him though. I only know what I know from rumors and the papers. You two need to talk about it though. This is something that affects you.” Naruto mouth was hanging open. The water on the stove was boiling hard and he just stood there staring off into space. His mind was filled with images of Sasuke covered in blood with that blank look on his face when he’s trying to shut off his emotions. Sasuke was a killer. It was in self defense, but still… Naruto didn’t know what to think. He’d been with him, alone. They were lovers. Shikamaru was right, they didn’t know each other, and yet he’d already slept in his bed. Naruto felt so vulnerable and stupid then. He hadn’t had any idea what he was getting into, and now it was too late. Too late because he cared. He hadn’t wanted too, but he did, and that changed everything. He snapped back to himself when a drop of boiling water leapt out of the pot and onto his hand. He added the ramen without thinking about it and pushed it down with the spoon. “You should have told me that first night…” Naruto whispered. He didn’t want to blame Shikamaru. It wasn’t fair, but if he’d known maybe he wouldn’t be in this mess… no that wasn’t true. He’d be right here right now because he had to admit to himself that he’d already started falling for the man when he gave him the pendant. Not because it was expensive or rare, but because he’d never been worth that much to anyone before. It had warmed him to the idea of more, when before it was just something to pass the time at work. “Don’t regret this Naruto. There wasn’t any stopping it. You were already starry eyed at Christmas, and I had no idea who this mysterious man was then. Even then if I’d known and told you we would still be here. Sasuke’s nothing if not persistent.” Naruto nodded. That was true. “Why is this happening to me?” Shikamaru signed and came around to keep Naruto from burning his dinner in his distraction. “Nothing is happening too you, you just got involved with a complicated man that’s all. He and I don’t always see eye to eye, but I can tell that you are more than just a good time to him. He was angry when I wouldn’t let him in that night. I couldn’t have kept him from you if I’d wanted too.” “Do you think it could be more than this? If this isn’t going anywhere then there’s no reason to even start. He said he wants to pick me up in the morning and spend time with me. Maybe I should just let you answer the door and tell him not to come back.” Shikamaru took the pot from Naruto and drained most of it in the sink then added the packets and stirred. “It wouldn’t work, and yes I think it’s more. He wouldn’t have chased you down last night if it wasn’t. If I answered the door he’d do what he had to do to get in, and I’m not stupid enough to stand too long between Sasuke and anything that he wants. If you don’t want to see him you’ll have to tell him yourself.” Naruto nodded and sat down to the bowl Shikamaru poured for him and began eating. He wasn’t going to get any sleep tonight. “Thanks Shika. You always make things clearer. I don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t met you.” “I am just as fortunate to have found you. I might have died of boredom by now if I hadn’t. You have a way of making things interesting.” Naruto smiled around a mouthful of noodles, and Shikamaru laughed. They talked about less important things for a little while before heading to bed. Naruto was hoping things would be clearer in the morning. ooOOoo Sasuke knocked on the door at seven on the dot. Naruto was still brushing his teeth. Kiba answered the door looking like a sleepy three year old with crazy hair and rubbing his eyes. The best part was the blanket he was dragging behind him with puppies all over it. Naruto peaked around the door to look at him one more time and spit tooth paste all over the mirror when he laughed. He finished and cleaned his mess as he made his way out. He wore jeans and his work t-shirt since he didn’t know how long they’d be gone. He took one look at Sasuke, and stopped in his tracks. Sasuke was wearing a very expensive dark blue pinstripe suit with a gold tie. He looked like an important man on his way to a board meeting where they’d discuss billion dollar deals and laugh at the little people. He didn’t look like the kind of man that would be interested in Naruto and he felt very small. He tugged at his t-shirt unconsciously and tried to look like he didn’t mind how out of place he felt. “Good morning.” Sasuke said. He looked Naruto over and smirked. Naruto was angry then. Sasuke knew he was uncomfortable and hadn’t given him any warning, not that it would have done any good with his wardrobe. It was still irritating that Sasuke seemed to be laughing at him. Naruto didn’t say anything, couldn’t say anything through his clinched teeth. “I want to show you where I work if that’s ok with you.” Naruto could tell it wasn’t really a question. Sasuke’s voice held the smallest amount of tightly controlled humor in it that made him want to say no, but Naruto was curious so he just nodded and grabbed his jacket. They were both quiet, and the silence was uncomfortable. Naruto realized that he did most of the talking when they’d been together so far, but he had nothing to say. Well, he had plenty to say, but it didn’t feel like the right time so he let it go. Traffic was heavy, but they were in a part of the city that he hadn’t been before so he kept his eyes on the buildings and the people and tried not to think too much about how little he knew about the man next to him. They pulled into a parking garage and the space had Sasuke’s name on it. His whole name. Sasuke looked at him for a reaction, and a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips when none was to be seen. “Uchiha.” Naruto said quietly, and Sasuke nodded before getting out. The elevator only took them up a to the third floor which Naruto was grateful for, and the doors slid open to reveal a classy hallway of wood paneling and high traffic carpet. The sign that faced the elevator had the names of several businesses on it with arrows and addresses, but he didn’t pay much attention he just followed Sasuke to the left and to door that had GAMER Inc. printed on it in neat letters. Sasuke entered a number code into a pad on the wall and the door clicked. When he opened the door it revealed a completely different environment than he was expecting. There was a desk right in front of the door with a woman with blonde hair answering phones and typing on a computer. That was the only normal thing about it. The company name was spelled out with five foot letters that hung individually from the ceiling and that was the only thing blocking the view of what seemed to be the entire office. Desks scattered everywhere with the individual mark of each occupant displayed for all to see. Some were a mess and some were very neat and organized, but the most impressive thing about them was the computers. Every desk had at least two and some had six or seven. The sound in the room was moderate, but not how you would expect a work environment at all. There was laughter in every corner and smiles on nearly every face. They all wore casual clothes a lot like Naruto was wearing. Animals seemed to have the run of the place as well. There were dogs and cats of all different colors and sizes. The cohesion of the room was captivating. There was a whoop from the far right corner and Naruto could see at least ten people standing around watching a game being played on the massive TV that hung on the wall. The back wall was all windows that looked out at another building across the street. The right wall for the most part was decorated with Game posters and awards. On the left there were doors that looked like they led to offices, but Naruto wasn’t willing to guess. This was nothing like he’d seen on TV or in movies and he didn’t quiet know what to think. He was also irritated at Sasuke for scaring him with that suit this morning and for not trying to ease his worries. It all disappeared though when Sasuke threaded their fingers and squeezed before pulling him toward the center of the room. Some of the people looked at them, greeted Sasuke and went right back to what they were doing, but most of them gawked openly. The most obvious to Naruto was the red head that sat at the tidiest desk in the room. “Hello Karin.” Sasuke said in a dangerous tone that made Naruto shiver. She just looked back and forth between them and sputtered before her face started to pale. “I have it on good authority that you have a key to my apartment without my knowledge. I’d like to have it now, and I’d like to know why it is in your possession.” She just sputtered a few more times with wide scared eyes before getting quiet again. She reached into the pocket of her blazer and pulled out the key in question. It was on a key chain all by itself. She handed it over and looked away from Sasuke’s glare. Naruto would have too if he’d been in her shoes. “It won’t matter if you have another. I’ve had the locks changed, and it requires more than a key now to get in. I don’t really want to know what you were doing there, but I can assure you that though I am forgiving you this time, I will not be so generous in the future. You will move your desk to the corner by Choji’s and you will stay there until I feel you’ve been punished enough.” She looked completely horrified, and Naruto wondered what was wrong with this Choji fellow. Sasuke pulled him along as they made their way to the right where the game was being played. Two men sat on a couch that looked like something out of an Ikea catalog Kiba’s mom had left in their apartment. They were elbowing each other while they played a very crude version of a war game. The lines were choppy and it was obvious that the animation wasn’t finished, but they didn’t seem to mind as they battled. The crowd parted for Sasuke as they made their way to the back of the couch. On the screen one of the characters died gruesomely, and the man with very pale blue hair collapsed backward and started groaning about being beaten on his own program, while the enormous man beside him grinned and accepted the praise of the spectators. “Suigetsu.” Sasuke said and the blue haired man turned around and grimaced. “He’s still saying the terrain is too simple. I’ll work up more detail in the hills and add more levels to some of the buildings. Are we going to give roof access on this one or should I stick to what I’ve got?” Sasuke looked at the base terrain on the screen and took the control that was handed to him. He moved the character through an alley before running around several buildings and into a jagged rocky area. “I think this should stay the way it is accept for the hills.” He gave the control back and walked to the screen and pointed to an indistinct area on the left. “I think this would make for a good view of the whole level and if you give it an entrance from two sides then a sniper can still escape. Try for one entrance straight up from the side, and make the other a more winding walk here. Also add more hiding places. I can only see a few. Go ahead and add a blind in there too. We haven’t used one yet, and I think it will fit with this level well.” Everyone listened to him with rapt attention. Most of the heads nodded in agreement. Naruto was impressed with the reaction. He liked video games, but he’d never seen the development side of it and he was very interested. “You need to stop skipping steps Suigetsu. You’re setting records on excess time in the programming phase because you refuse to make a mockup first.” “Yeah, yeah. I may do the most work, but my level is always the best in the game. I’ll make the changes.” Naruto was surprised that instead of irritated at the tone of this Suigetsu, Sasuke seemed to take it in stride. “Jugo, do you have a moment?” Sasuke asked and Naruto was stunned when the man on the couch stood up to the full height of a giant. “Yeah, I’m ahead of schedule.” They walked away from the group, and Naruto noticed that they were all trying to not look like they were listening to every word that was said. “This is Naruto. I want him to have a full tour, but I have something I need to do. It won’t take long, and I’ll join you as soon as I can, but the manufacturer is giving me the run around and we’re going to miss our projected release date, and that I will not allow.” This was a side Naruto hadn’t seen before and he liked it. This professional persona was very attractive, but made Naruto feel his age. Sasuke was probably around the same age as Shikamaru since they’d gone to school together making him about twenty four or twenty five. Young, successful and attractive, Naruto couldn’t imagine what this man saw in him. Jugo nodded and held out his hand to Naruto. “I’m Jugo, one of the production managers. You want something to drink, coffee or something?” Naruto nodded and shook his hand. “Nice to meet you.” Before Naruto could go on Sasuke interrupted him, “I’ll see you in a few minutes.” His hand slid over Naruto’s back possessively before he turned and headed for the closed office side. Jugo led him to the break area and got him a soda before they started walking through the different sections. He talked about what each division did and which project they were working on. Gamer had a new game coming out just before summer that was a sequel to the first game, a game in the first months of development, and the game they’d been playing earlier was supposed to make it out before Thanksgiving. Everyone seemed very curious about whom he was, but they didn’t ask. Naruto found out why Choji was so undesirable to work next to when they passed his desk area. It was a wreck with chip bags and snacks stashed on every available surface and the man himself was loud, but in Naruto’s opinion, fun. He could understand though why Karin would have a problem with him, she was his complete opposite in every way. So much so that she would probably go nuts very quickly. Naruto didn’t feel sorry for her in the slightest. Sasuke rejoined them when they made it to the design team area. Suigetsu was watching him with strange knowing eyes, and Naruto felt his face heat. Jugo went on explaining how the different teams handled separate areas of each game and though they all had individual projects, they worked closely together to keep all the parts cohesive. Naruto didn’t understand most of the jargon that was used, but he enjoyed hearing about it as if he did. They were done with the tour and Naruto was standing watching a young woman named Anko work on some kind of model. Someone had called Sasuke over to ask him about something, and Naruto was immediately surrounded by Suigetsu and several other people. “We were wondering when he’d bring you in. I’ve known Sasuke since college and I’ve never seen him so distracted before.” Everyone nodded in agreement with Suigetsu, and Naruto was starting to feel a little cornered. “We’ve only been on a couple of dates. It hasn’t been that long.” Naruto said as his eyes searched for an escape route. None of the people around him looked convinced. “He’s been slowly spending more time out of the office for the last six month. He used to practically live here, and now he leaves at no later than seven every night.” Suigetsu was getting closer as he spoke, and Naruto moved as far back as he could before the back of his legs hit a desk. “He’s been coming by the coffee shop that I work at for about that long, but he never said a word to me before Christmas.” The silence was uncomfortable. Naruto squirmed as they seemed to close in on him like lions with a baby zebra. He didn’t know what they wanted or if they were just being protective of Sasuke, but he got the feeling he was being tested. His backbone snapped into place suddenly and he went on the defensive like a wounded animal. “It has to be more than that. We’ve all noticed it. He’s different, and you are the only change that we can see.” Everyone accept Suigetsu seemed to notice the change in him, and started to give him some room. Suigetsu just took the opportunity to get closer. Naruto put his hand on the man’s chest and pushed. “I don’t see how it has anything to do with you either way.” Naruto was standing as tall as possible and trying to take up as much room as he could. He knew how to intimidate, he’d practically grown up on the streets and he’d learned a thing or two he just didn’t like having to use that knowledge. Suigetsu looked irritated, and for Naruto that was better than predatory. “It has everything to do with us. We’re practically his family here and if you’re changing things then we have the right to know…” Naruto’s voice was loud when he interrupted. “You don’t have the right to know anything. You only met me a few minutes ago, and as far as my relationship with Sasuke is concerned, it will never be any of your business. I don’t need this shit.” Naruto pushed his way past everyone and headed for the door. He heard Sasuke call out to him, but he ignored him. This was getting too complicated too fast and Naruto wasn’t ready. He’d never even kissed someone before a few weeks ago and now people were acting like he was in a committed relationship that had been going on for months with a man he barely knew. Sasuke Uchiha was too important to too many people. Naruto wasn’t even able to take care of himself, how could he possibly handle a relationship? The door wouldn’t open when he got to it. He tugged on it, and then jerked a few times before taking both hands to it with one foot on the wall and pulled as hard as he could. It didn’t work, but it didn’t matter, Sasuke had caught up to him and was wrapped around him tight. He pulled Naruto away from the door and turned him around, never letting go of his hold. “What happened?” “I want to leave Sasuke. I’m not ready for this. I don’t even know you and things are already complicated. I’m just a kid that makes coffee in a little coffee shop. I’m damaged goods, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be good enough for you.” Sasuke kissed him then. It was long and hard and wet. Naruto forgot why he was mad, then he forgot that he was mad at all. This was worth anything and everything that they’d have to deal with. Sasuke eased away slowly and Naruto’s eyes slowly open. He looked well kissed, and he knew it. The eruption of applause from the room brought him back quickly though and he stepped out of Sasuke’s arms and straightened his clothes, trying to hide the sudden and very noticeable erection in his jeans. Sasuke smirked at Naruto, which didn’t help with the erection at all, and then his face went cold as ice. “Suigetsu… get your things and go home. Hope that you didn’t cause too much damage because if you did you will be looking for a new job.” Sasuke turned to look over the room then at all the faces of his company. “This will not happen again. Is that clear?” There was a low murmur of agreement from all sides and then the sound of shuffling and footsteps as everyone went back to work. Naruto looked at Suigetsu for a moment and saw him glaring from across the room. He was gathering some things together and Naruto assumed he was doing what Sasuke told him to do. Naruto didn’t care either way, he just wanted to leave. He was embarrassed about the whole situation and he needed to be somewhere comfortable to deal with all the conflicting thoughts running around in his head. “Let me take you to get something to eat.” Sasuke said as he easily twisted the bolt on the door and pulled it open. Naruto wanted to throw a fit, but he’d save it for later. Instead he just nodded and followed Sasuke out the door, and back to the car. I hope you enjoyed it! I'm hoping to get another chapter out tomorrow ;)
