The day the rain came

He was cold, hungry, and tired. Today SUCKED, Yukio decided. They had woken up before dawn and an early frost was surely on its way, as evidenced by the approaching cold weather. He let out an unhappy sneeze and rubbed his arms frantically in hopes to warm them up as they completed the training for the day.

Looking at the young man accompanying him, Gai sighed. It was growing colder and soon the leaves would start to fall, and still he was assigned as the personal trainer for Yukio. Although the two weeks had long since passed, Yukio's father had extended his contract with Tsunade-sama, and until he decided otherwise Yukio was a permanent resident of Konoha. Throwing the younger man his towel, Gai put away the notebook that he used to keep track of Yukio's progress. Another report for Tsunade and the daimyo would be necessary in the near future, and Gai wanted to make doubly sure that everything was proceeding as planned. "Let's head back," he called to Yukio. They weren't technically outside of Konoha, just in one of the less-inhabited parts, but it would take at least half an hour to get back to Gai's flat.

Few people were walking through this neighbourhood, and Gai made a point of politely greeting everybody he encountered, receiving a friendly word or gesture in return. As much as he enjoyed any and all kinds of training, Gai was glad they were calling it a day for today. Not only did Yukio apparently have two left thumbs, but a by-now-familiar sore feeling between his legs and a well-earned sense of fatigue all made him less than eager to spend more time here than necessary. Quite possibly it was these same reasons, coupled with a loudly arguing Yukio, that kept Gai from noticing the eyes filled with pure loathing that had followed him and his ward from their training area.

Yukio, lacking ninja senses, was equally unaware. He was overjoyed at the comment to head back, and filled with a new rush of adrenaline that warmed his body. "Can we have dinner as soon as we get back, Gai-sensei?" Yukio asked.

Trotting down the street with Yukio in tow, Gai nodded. "I see no reason why not," he agreed, looking forward to a hot meal and a comfortable seat...and his partner. Kakashi had been called away this morning on a short solo mission for the Hokage and he was expected back around nightfall. Sighing in pleasure at the memories of last night, Gai stretched, stopping for a second in front of a shop window and studying the different wares offered when finally the cold sensation of an enemy's gaze on his unprotected back penetrated his mind. Glancing around discreetly, he couldn't pinpoint the exact position of their follower, showing that whoever it was had excellent ninja skills. He grasped Yukio's hand and started moving again, while at the same time trying to get a sense for their shadow. "Yukio," he murmured. "We are being followed. I need you to do exactly what I tell you to do under any
circumstance. Is that understood?"

Yukio was... amazingly calm given the situation. Although only the daimyo’s second son, he was the favoured one and was used to attempts on his life. Of course, he had his own personal armed guard of ten elite officers, and most of the would-be assassins were pathetic rebels that didn't even make it all the way to said guard.

"...Yes, Gai-sensei." he said, walking alongside Gai and keeping his pace.

Nodding to himself, Gai suddenly broke out into a run, hoping that they would make it into the centre of Konoha where he could lose their follower. Around corners and through alleys they fled, Gai dragging the slower Yukio behind him, the few people who saw them used to Gai's bouts of odd behaviour and simply shrugging it off.

Stopping in a dingy passage, Gai granted Yukio a short break so that the princeling could get his breath back. Listening closely, he soon heard footsteps approaching; not one, contrary to his earlier analysis, but a large group of people. Peeking around the corner, he spotted a half-rusted grate that covered a cellar window. The opening was just large enough that a thin youth would be able to squeeze through. Calculating a quick battle plan, Gai grabbed Yukio's wrist and pointed at the grate. "You have roughly half a minute to get in there. And stay in there until I tell you otherwise, password is scarecrow," he ordered brusquely before pushing the youth towards the hiding place.

Knowing to follow the instructions of his guard, for once, Yukio did not put up a fight. He nodded and scurried into the small place in less than half a minute, falling as silent as a temple mouse as he peered out, out of sight, to watch what would happen.

When he was sure that Yukio was safe inside the cellar, Gai began to rapidly form seals. Genjutsu had never been his strongest point but it should be enough to cover Yukio's tracks and the opening in the cellar window. Once that was done, he began a hasty new set of seals and created a kage bunshin. One last set of seals and the henge transforming himself into the young prince was complete. And not one moment too soon, for he could almost feel the approaching presence of their hunters.

Motioning for his bunshin, the transformed Gai took off down the street in the opposite direction they had come, the kage bunshin at his side.

Sadly, they didn't even make it to the street corner before a massive man blocked their way. Turning back was just as unsuccessful. Gai was well and truly cornered. Cowering behind the bunshin in his best imitation of Yukio's behaviour, he threw nervous looks at the troupe of men...shinobi, of that he was certain, who had formed a double ring around them.

Yukio's eyes widened as he watched what was going on. There were so many attackers...! Surely even Gai-sensei wouldn't be able to take them all on himself! But Yukio also knew when he couldn't be of any help, and stayed quiet and hidden, praying for Gai to get through this ordeal safely.

In a moment that could only be called the calm before the storm, the massive man that had first blocked Gai's escape and who was most likely the leader of this group met the gaze of both the kage bunshin and Gai in his Yukio-shaped disguise.

The next second weapons were pulled and fists and legs flew through the air, intent only on taking out the enemy. For the first few minutes Gai and his bunshin held their own quite well. But it was when the clone was skewered by several kunai and dissolved into smoke that everything went downhill.

Although the men suddenly became more cautious after the destruction of the clone, once no attack came from the shadows they relaxed. Having to divert his chakra flow so that the genjutsu and his henge wouldn't collapse, Gai was unable to resort to any nin- or genjutsu; and his taijutsu was out of the question, since there was no way that Yukio would have been able to do what would be necessary to take these men out. And even then Gai couldn't be completely sure that he would be able to take down all of them -- therefore his cover was of the utmost importance. Had he been in a state where he could have accessed even the first two Gates, he would most likely have been fine, but so far his Gates and his body hadn't yet recovered enough to withstand any kind of strain.

So it was with a bitter smile that Gai was overwhelmed, in his last desperate struggle receiving a deep knife wound close to his shoulder blade, only to be thrown to the floor, beaten to the brink of unconsciousness and then bound. Two men grabbed him, still transformed, and carried him away the as the leader laughed, calling Gai a useless Konoha dog and a spineless coward who had fled and left Yukio to his fate.

All this happened less then 20 yards away from the boy’s hiding place.

Yukio was scared. He didn't leave his hiding place, though. Sooner or later someone from Konoha had to find out what happened and come, and only then would he leave. He knew to obey orders when it came to saving his own life.
