To bid you all farewell

Kakashi awoke at dawn, despite his current state of hangover. It was
just something he always did. Feeling the weight next to him, it took him
a moment to place it before he turned sharply to see Yukio lying next
to him. He was surprised to... not feel hatred. Or as though he'd been
violated.

Really, he just didn't feel anything at all.

He went through the morning movements, cleaning up, and the inevitable
trip to the monument. He found himself speechless when he got there.
Another name. Another person he had failed. In the end, Kakashi ended up
just crying quietly, whispering out apologies.

About a week later, Kakashi arranged to meet Lee at Gai's former
apartment. Pakkun was with Lee; apparently he had been as much help
to the young and lonely boy as Kakashi had thought he would. It didn't take
long to take care of the business there; Kakashi only wanted one set of
the bed sheets, and the couch, places he had fond memories of, and both
of which Lee had no problem with letting Kakashi have. It was when he
was checking to see if Gai had ever gotten around to getting the couch
cleaned after all that he found the book there that Gai had purchased
so long ago, and he began to mist up at just the sight of it, the
thought that Gai had done something like that for HIM.

Afterwards, Kakashi had bought Lee lunch and sent the boy on his way. It
was as he was going to pay the shop owner that he found the letter
Tsunade had given him from Gai. Kakashi had never gotten around to
reading it. Paying quickly, he went to find someplace relatively peaceful
to look it over.

After Kakashi had paid and started walking again, he passed by a group of
young men around his age that were laughing and joking quite merrily. He
had just passed them when he heard them mention Gai. "Did you hear? They
finally declared that freak dead…you know that nutcase that was always
running around in green spandex? I met him once and I thought my eyes
would start bleeding, he was that ugly. Probably killed himself to do
the world a favour..."

Kakashi stopped dead in his tracks. Under normal circumstances he would
have dealt with this rationally. Moved on, just ignored someone's jibe
at someone else.

But Kakashi had not been rational for months now. He was still
undernourished, lacked sleep, and was always either hung over or
smashed, assuming he wasn't damn near hallucinating from too many
missions and too little sleep.

He turned right around, grabbed the offensive speaker and slammed him to
the ground, holding him down with a foot to his throat.

"DON'T YOU EVER TALK ABOUT HIM LIKE THAT AGAIN!"

All around him people stopped in their tracks and stared in wide-eyed
shock at the suddenly violent ninja. Whispers spread like wildfire, and
it was easy to tell that this would keep the village supplied with rumours
for days to come.

One of the friends of the unfortunate man inched closer, keeping a wary
eye on Kakashi. "I apologize for my friend...I'm sure that he didn't
mean any harm.." he tried to calm the infuriated ANBU down.

Kakashi turned his furious glare to the person's friend now. His teeth
were clenched behind his mask and a growl escaped from his throat.

"If I ever -- EVER -- hear either of you talking about him like that again,
I will kill you. Trash like you don't even deserve to speak his name."
Delivering a swift and sharp kick to the side of the man on the ground,
Kakashi turned and left before he got even more violent. He never made
empty threats, after all, and knew he would be capable of killing them
in his current state, fellow ninja of Konoha or not.

After half an hour or so of walking Kakashi managed to cool down enough,
he was too tired to stay angry. He'd also managed to wander to the edge
of Konoha in that time. Deciding it was as good a place as any, he sat
down on a fallen log and took out Gai's letter to read.

In the letter Gai spoke of his earnest admiration of his rival, his care
and affection for him, as well as his amusement about certain aspects of
Kakashi's personality. It seemed as if this had been written quite some
time ago...predating even their mission to the Onsen.

Then came newer pages; in them Gai took on a more private tone,
reminiscing about the many turbulences they had gone through, as well as
looking back at important points in their relationship. He expressed his
regret about being unable to keep his promise to Kakashi to stay at his
side, as well as his wealth of love and affection for his partner. In the
end he simply asked Kakashi to take care of Lee as well as himself and
spoke of his hope that Kakashi would be able to carry on with his life.

By the end of the letter, Kakashi was in tears once more. He held it
tightly to his chest and just cried for hours, alone with his thoughts
and the setting sun.

To all our loyal readers and reviewers:

We would like to thank you for sticking with us through the last 48 chapters. Now don't worry, there is no need to cry, or run in circles and certainly not to die. Our little story is far from over but as we are approaching the WIP part of it there will be a change in our update schedule. Instead of (almost) every day we will have to limit it to two or three times a month.
Upates notices will continue to be posted at the Gai/Kaka community on LJ that we can only recommend for great stories and art work (much better than ours).
We hope you have enjoyed the Omake so far and will continue to enjoy it in the future. It certainly was a blast writing it.

The next update will be in mid February, please look forward to it.
