Kakashi nodded, still holding the pale, rounded face.
They’d known whom they’d found immediately, of course. Although at roughly eight years old Uchiha Sasuke was still relatively baby-soft, he had the distinctive Uchiha features – black almond-shaped eyes, pale, pale skin and hair such a deep, glossy black that even covered in dirt it held an almost blue sheen. And even in his traumatized state, his strikes were quick and precise. Given his strength born of sheer desperation, if Kakashi and Genma had been lesser ninja, even chunin, Sasuke might have been able to fight them off.
In fact, they’d once scouted him as a possible Kage for the Prince. He was quite a remarkable young student, a tensai – prodigy – by any measurement.
Except when measured against his older brother.
The question was meant to elicit a response, to get the victim talking and to gauge if he was undamaged enough to answer. Sasuke knew who and where he was, which was a big thing for a survivor of the kind of attack he must have witnessed. Kakashi was impressed. Moreover, the hint of irritated defiance under the fear in the kid’s eyes gave Kakashi hope. The boy was terrified, a young leaf battered by a harsh winter storm, but he’d float the strongest winds if nurtured correctly
Kakashi kept his hands and voice gentle.
“We’re not going to hurt you, Sasuke. You’re going to come with us and we’ll find a safe place for you. I promise.”
Sasuke looked at him, huge black eyes bleaker than any Kakashi had seen since the war.
“You can’t promise that.” He said, simply. “There’s no such thing.”
