Chapter 5
Kakashi looked around, bleary-eyed taking in his surroundings. Memories of last night returned to the forefront of his mind. He looked down to the petal – haired beauty still sleeping next to him. The comforter was around her waist exposing her back to his gaze. He was glad she was not awake to witness the blush that crept up on Kakashi’s face as some of the more intimate memories replayed in his head. Had he really just slept with his ex-student? ‘Yes, and I enjoyed it immensely’, he thought. But where to go from here? He couldn’t deny the fact that she had stirred in him emotions he had long since thought to be dead. But he wasn’t so certain that she would feel the same way. Kakashi wasn’t certain what to do. He had never found himself in a position where he actually cared what might happen “the morning after”. As caught up as he was in his thoughts, he could not ignore the call of nature, so he made his way to the bathroom. He relieved himself and decided that a shower was in order. He was pretty sure that Sakura wouldn’t mind.
Sakura woke from a pleasant dream. She smiled as she stretched and decided a cup of coffee wouldn’t be amiss. She lazily got up and retrieved a robe from her closet. She noticed her clothes scattered on the floor and memories of last night came. She smiled. That would definitely be a night to remember. Kakashi wasn’t in bed when she woke, and his clothes were gone. ‘Must’ve had somewhere to go’, she thought. Her smile turned into a slight frown. She hoped that he didn’t regret last night. She decided to find him later on and see where he stood in regards to their newfound relationship. She wasn’t a fool, she knew that he probably just looked at it as a one night stand. But she didn’t want him to regret it. She certainly didn’t. And she got through it without even thinking about her unrequited love, Sasuke. Yes, she was on her way to moving on. It was a new day for Sakura in many ways. She started brewing her coffee and was making herself a light breakfast (lunch really) of toast and a sliced apple. She sat at her table munching when a knock at her door startled her. ‘Who could it be?’, she thought.
“Who is it?” Sakura mumbled around her toast.
“It’s Ino. Can I come in please?” Sakura figured that there’s no time like the present to mend things with Ino. In hindsight she realized that she was just trying to help. Of course it’s hard to see the forest for the trees when you’re too busy trying to find all the scattered pieces of your broken, bloody heart. Sakura opened the door and waited for Ino to come in before locking it up again.
“Would you like some coffee?”
“Sure, sounds good. About last night…..” Ino started, only to be interrupted.
“Forget it. I’m sorry that I got so upset. I know you were only concerned for me. It just hurt because it was the truth.” That was all that needed to be said. They hugged and sat down to drink their coffee.
“So where did you go last night after you left? I got worried when you didn’t come out of the bathroom so I went to look for you only to find the window open.” Ino smirked knowingly, waiting for Sakura to elaborate.
“I just came home. I wanted to be alone.” Well, it was mostly the truth. Sakura hated to lie.
Ino nodded her understanding and they sat quietly, sharing an amiable silence when an undeniable male voice interrupted their quiet interlude.
“Sakura, have you seen my headband? I thought I dropped………” Kakashi’s voice faltered as he noticed that she had company. Ino’s eyes nearly bulged out of her head at the sight of Kakashi in Sakura’s apartment, hair soaking wet, no headband, revealing his sharingan. Sakura dressed in only her robe. She was starting to put together the pieces. It could have been brushed off as innocent, except for the blushing, guilty faces.
Sakura looked just as shocked as Ino. She didn’t think to check the bathroom. She didn’t even come up with an excuse; she was too busy wondering how come she didn’t notice the shower on. And she realized that there was no way he could have left and locked the deadbolt from outside. ‘Stupid Sakura!’ she berated herself. Ino decided to break the tense silence.
“Would you like some coffee, Hatake-san?” She asked a little too cheerily.
Sakura came out of her stupor, and decided that she was being rude.
“Yes, would you like some coffee, Kakashi?” Sakura echoed. She knew the answer already. She knew that he would never take his mask off in front of Ino. She was just playing her part of gracious host.
“No, thank you. I need to get to headquarters and check in for any missions.” With that he returned to her room to find his headband still a little entangled in her headboard. He was glad for his mask, as he could not have hidden his blush as another wave of memories came over him. He wasn’t sure why he was so concerned at this point. He was sure that Ino would have it all over the village by nightfall. He was starting to wander if this wasn’t a mistake. He could only imagine the things people will say when they find out. There was the age difference, for starters. And he was her sensei. Well, ex-sensei. He made his way back out to the kitchen. Sakura walked him outside but didn’t shut the door entirely. She didn’t want Ino to think they were actually hiding anything. Which they were.
“Thank you for staying with me last night.” She blushed prettily as she said this. Kakashi was cursing himself for having some sort of feelings for her, foreign as they were.
“No problem.” He said as stoic as ever. They stood there in an awkward silence for a few moments. Sakura decided not to let him go without some sort of show of affection. It was only proper after what they shared, she thought. She stepped to him and hugged him tightly. It surprised Kakashi. He wasn’t expecting her to show any affection where it could be easily seen. Of course they could play it off as a gesture of friendship. But she blew that cover out of the water when she kissed him on the mouth. Nevermind that he had his mask on. She lingered a little too long for a friendly kiss. Kakashi looked around to see if anyone had caught their little display, and caught Ino peeking out of her blinds.
“We’ll talk later, Sakura.” He stated. “I’ll be at my apartment later on this evening if you want to stop by.”
“Okay. See you later Kakashi.” She smiled at him before she retreated inside. Kakashi walked off, wondering where this was going to end up, and wondering what it meant for his personal life. He was a loner by nature. Well, he certainly had friends, but they all had an understanding of his nature. He wasn’t sure what they would make of him once his little secret was let out. He felt guilty thinking of it in terms of a secret, like he was ashamed, because he wasn’t. He just didn’t want her to suffer the gossip of the villagers. And truthfully, he didn’t want to either.
Sakura sat down and resumed her morning (afternoon) cup of coffee. Ino couldn’t stand being left out of the loop.
“So, WHAT was that about?” She asked in disbelief.
What to say? She wasn’t sure what they even felt about it at that moment. Best to stick with something that was….. well, not quite the truth.
“It’s nothing Ino. He just stayed with me last night because I needed a friend.” Sakura hoped that she would buy it.
“Oh, really? Then that was a friendly kiss you two shared outside?” Damn. She should have known that Ino wasn’t going to let it alone.
“Yes. Sort of.” She berated herself for not being able to lie like most people could. Damn her sense of honesty. “Look, Ino, we still aren’t sure what’s going on, so please don’t gossip about us, okay?” Now the honesty was coming off. She loved her best friend, but she knew Ino liked to run her mouth. She hoped that her friend would keep her secret. She wasn’t even sure why it should have to be one. They were both consenting adults. They didn’t do anything wrong. But she knew that the villagers would not see it that way. She hoped that they could make it through this without any complications, but somehow, she doubted that would happen. ‘Yes, I definitely have to talk to Kakashi later.’ She thought.
