“Sorry Kurenai, just step over everything.” Anko said as they entered the door. It was true that Kakashi and Anko’s house was torn upside down. There was no flooring in the kitchen, all the dishes were piled up high on a table and on the counter, furniture had been moved everywhere and there were drip clothes laying all over the living room floor where painting would be taking place later on.
“Come on, I’ll show you the bedroom, you will love this paint style.” Anko carefully led Kurenai through their more than cluttered house. “Hey, how did you get in on this?” Anko said surprised to find Iruka in the bedroom with Kakashi.
“You’re future husband can’t paint worth shit. He knows nothing about interior design.” Iruka said.
“Hey now, you just hush I’m doing the best I can with this damn cloth!” Kakashi turned around to scold Iruka.
“He’s redone that section of the wall three times.” Iruka said. Kurenai looked around at what was done, which wasn’t too much.
“What you have in here is beautiful, I like the texture.” Kurenai said.
“How are you pregnant Kurenai?” Kakashi asked.
“Pregnant and sick in fact as much as I like seeing you try to paint and having to keep redoing it because you screw up, I’m going to have to leave before I throw up again.” Kurenai left the bedroom.
“Yeah, that would be great.” Anko dug through the scattered out dishes and got her a glass of water. It was one of the only drinks she could have that didn’t make her sick. “That’s going to look nice when it’s done.” Kurenai said.
“You can come back and see the finished product when you’re less sick.” Anko reassured her. The rest of the evening was pretty uneventful. Kurenai left Kakashi and Anko’s house by 5:00 to meet Asuma at home. It was convenient that she and Asuma only lived 4 streets back from Kakashi, actually it was Kurenai’s house but Asuma had been living with her for a while.
The rest of the day was uneventful, actually the rest of the week was uneventful for everyone. However the next Monday, Iruka the self appointed wedding planner, and Kurenai had big plans…
It was 10:30 and Kurenai had taken the day off in order to go to the doctor. Asuma had also taken the day off to be with her. It was uncomfortable lying in the doctor’s office with your pregnant stomach exposed waiting nervously for the doctor to perform an ultra sound and tell you the gender of your child.
“Do you want a boy or a girl, Asuma.” Kurenai was trying to fill the nervous silence and since Asuma couldn’t smoke it was even worse.
“I don’t care. I’m just so nervous every time we come in here. I’m always scared the doctor is going to tell you there’s a problem or you’ve miscarried or something like that.” It was true that every time they had gone to the doctor Asuma had been insanely nervous. Secretly, Kurenai couldn’t figure out while having this baby was so incredibly important to him. It was true that they had both wanted this pregnancy, but Asuma especially was jittery about his unborn child because this was a dream come true for him.
Meanwhile on the other side of town, in a very different scenario.
“No! No! Are you fucking crazy? I’m not putting that thing on! Have you lost your mind? We’re not having a fucking wedding!” Anko was fighting with Iruka.
“Anko, please, please you need this.”
“I need that like I need a kunai shoved up my ass! Let…me…go!” Iruka had grabbed Anko and was attempting to force her into a beautiful kimono that in all honesty Kakashi had picked out the week before. Anko hadn’t seen it yet, but she was definitely opinionated about it.
“Anko, are you my friend?”
“Yes!” she hissed thrashing around in his arms.
“How much of a friend?”
“A damn good one!” she answered attempting to tie Iruka’s hands up with some rope she had in her pack.
“Then quit biting my arm and get your ass in this kimono…come on you haven’t even seen it yet.” Anko did as she was instructed, although she was proud of the brutal teeth marks she had left in Iruka’s arm. Iruka had talked the owner of a boutique into bringing this particular kimono to his apartment for Anko to try on because he knew she would react like she just did. Iruka showed her the kimono, it was unlike a traditional wedding kimono, it was black with red floral embroidery covering it in asymmetrical lines. It was gorgeous and it had a modest train behind it. Anko was a little relieved to see that it wasn’t white although she still didn’t like the idea of playing dress up. She wasn’t one of those little girls who dreamed about her wedding day…she was one of those little girls who told other little girls what to do on their wedding night.
“There it is. Kakashi picked it out of some catalog. Now try it on before you break his heart.” Iruka said. Anko sighed and thinking nothing of it, starting stripping down, she didn’t even wait for Iruka to leave the room, nor did she volunteer to go elsewhere. When came to modesty…Anko had…well, none. She had stripped down and had pulled the kimono up over her shoulders. “Okay, zip me up.” She said to Iruka. And so Iruka zipped the back of the kimono and tied the thick red belt around her.
“Okay, now come look at yourself.” Iruka led her over to his full length mirror but it was on the inside of his door. He straightened out the fabric and allowed the train of the kimono to fall to one side so Anko could see the detailing. It was only then that he opened his closet door revealing Anko’s reflection to herself.
Back in the doctor’s office, the doctor had arrived and was prepping Kurenai for an ultrasound. The doctor chattered away but Kurenai and Asuma looked at each other nervously. Finally, the doctor began an ultrasound while asking Kurenai how she had been feeling and other questions that Kurenai was simply too nervous to answer in complete logical sentences.
The doctor smiled and turned the ultrasound screen to face both Asuma and Kurenai. “Look, here is the outline of your baby. There’s the head right there, you can even see the eye cavity. The tiny hands though still developing, and there’s the feet. The baby has a strong heartbeat too. Now, my big question for you, is do you wish to know the gender because I know right now.” The doctor said smiling all over. Kurenai and Asuma were relieved to get this good news about the health of their unborn child. They had come to the doctor anticipating knowing the gender, and they were about to find out.
“Yes, please tell us.” Kurenai said, still sounding nervous.
“Well, you’re having a…”
“Wait…just tell Kurenai. I changed my mind…I don’t want to know until the baby is born.” Asuma had changed his mind at the last moment. Kurenai didn’t mind, but it made her change her mind as well.
“Okay, then I don’t want to know either.” Kurenai smiled. “We’re sorry.” She said.
“Oh, it’s okay, however, I do have to write your baby’s gender on your chart at this time. I’ll make a note that you don’t wish to know.” The doctor turned her back to both of them. There were two boxes at the top of Kurenai’s medical record: M and F. The doctor placed a checkmark in one of the boxes and scribbled some notes. Asuma reached over and squeezed Kurenai’s hand.
“Are you sure you’re okay with not knowing?” he asked her softly. Kurenai shook her head yes.
“I’m okay with it.” She reassured him.
“You’re baby is most likely going to be small. You’re four months along and it is at this point in the pregnancy when we can begin to estimate birth weight. I’m going to estimate your child will be around 7 pounds.” The doctor said.
Anko looked at herself in the mirror. She didn’t say anything, she just gazed at her reflection. She had to reach up to touch her dreaded cursed seal to make certain that this was really her and not someone else.
“Well? What do you think?” Iruka asked her. Anko’s disposition had completely changed. She answered him, her voice was meek, non combative, almost sensitive.
“Kakashi, really picked this out?”
“Yep. You should see his that matches it. It’s handsome.” Then, Anko felt exactly what she didn’t want to feel: she felt tears in her eyes.
“Why, Iruka…why did he…you know…why did he choose this for me.” Anko started wiping her eyes.
“Because, he loves you and believe it or not he wants to give you an appropriate wedding.” Iruka told her as gently as possible.
“But…I don’t want it for me…” she said still wiping hr falling tears.
“I know that, he knows that, but Anko, you’ve never wanted anything for you...and the one thing Kakashi wants is to have a wedding with you.” Anko didn’t say anything for what seemed like forever.
“So the fact that we’re redoing the house was…”
“Yes, a skillfully thought out plan to make arrangements behind your back.” Iruka said. Anko couldn’t help but smile all over.
“That’s really sneaky…that bastard…I love him.” Anko said.
“After all Anko, just admit that somewhere deep, deep inside you; you wanted to have a wedding.” Iruka smiled at her. Anko wouldn’t dare admit it out loud and she even had trouble admitting it to herself, but Iruka was right. It was just so much easier to play hard ball than admit how she really felt.
“Oh and Anko, you’re going to need to put something under that kimono, it dips too low in the front.” Iruka said.
“What the fuck? I like it, besides you know as well as I do I have a great rack, might as well let everyone else know that.”
“We’ll fight this out later. Come here I want to show you the picture of Kakashi’s kimono.”
It was true this was really happening, Anko and Kakashi were having a wedding and Kurenai and Asuma were having a baby. Life is truly full of surprises…
