Kakashi shook Naruto gently. “Naruto. Wake up Naruto.” Naruto rolled in his bed “Just five…….minu…” Snore. “Naruto this is your first day of school you got to wake up.” At hearing that Naruto sprung up from his bed and effectively bumped heads into Kakashi‘s. “ ow ow ow ow ouch.” Naruto was rubbing his head furiously while Kakashi sighed and rubbed his. Naruto looked at his dad and laughed nervously “hehe sorry dad. I panicked when I thought I might be late.” He said while scratching his head. “It’s okay Naruto, but why don’t you take a shower now and brush your teeth while I get breakfast ready.” “Okay dad.”
Kakashi yelled as he headed out of his son‘s room “So what would you like for breakfast.” Naruto just smiled and shouted “You know what I‘d like.” “You know Naruto you’ve been eating ramen for four days straight now. I’m not sure if it’s healthy for you.” He walked up to his dad and hugged him while draped in a towel and gave him a pout and said “Pretty please dad.” That’s all it took for Kakashi to give in to the young boy. “Fine, but tomorrow we’re having a real breakfast.” “YESSS!”
Kakashi had said that three days in a row now, and for some reason they always ended up eating the same thing each morning. It had become routine for them the past four days, they would start the morning with ramen, then train for about two hours on refining different types of jutsus as well as developing their taijutsu skills. Naruto was becoming extremely skilled at hand to hand combat. Then after that they would go to the Hokage tower and get some simple D missions to work on together. Every Mission they had been in so far had bore the same result. People fell in love with Naruto after the first day they met him. He was always very polite as well as selfless. He was truly a boy after everyone’s heart. And Naruto soon became fond of the village and it’s people, and the villagers were always delighted to see the warm smile spread across his face as they thanked him for helping.
Kakashi headed towards the kitchen and began to boil the water. He was gonna miss the blonde bubble of joy that accompanied him on the past missions, but now that Naruto was going to be away at school he could start taking C rank missions to help pay some of his bills that were piling up. It’s a good thing ramen was cheap or he’d be in real trouble. Feeding the boy seemed to be impossible with his insatiable appetite. He had to thank Sasuke one of these days. Ever since Sasuke had helped him place his order for ramen, Naruto was attached to it. Naruto told him that every time he ate a bowl it would remind him of Sasuke.
The Ramen was ready and Naruto was getting dressed. Naruto stared at his reflection in the mirror ‘please let the other students like me, or at least not hate me.‘ The boy was very persistent in wearing the color orange at all times, so who was Kakashi to deny the boy something that made him happy. Besides orange looked good on him, it made him stand out. “Mmmm, wow dad something smells good in here.” Kakashi chuckled, Naruto had said this every morning. Naruto walked up to Kakashi and hugged him “Good morning Dad. Did you sleep well.” Naruto said this as he leaned up to kiss his dads cheek. Kakashi smiled at the warm affection from his son. “Good morning Naruto, and I did sleep well, thanks for asking.” Naruto just smiled.
The two ate their breakfast in silence. After three bowls of ramen and two cups of orange juice Naruto was ready for school. Naruto hugged Kakashi once more before heading out the door. “Have a good day at work dad. And just leave the laundry I’ll take care of it after school okay.” Kakashi patted the boys hair a bit. “So I’m wondering Naruto…who is the parent here?” Naruto just laughed “You are. Silly, that’s why I look up to you, because I really respect the kind of person you are. I just don’t want you to get too stressed out, so I try to do the little things for you.” He looked at his watch “AHHH! I’m gonna be late.” He ran out the door in a hurry and slammed the door on his way out. Kakashi could her the faint sound of Naruto yelling sorry. “Well I better get to work then.” Kakashi sighed and looked at the pile of dishes on the table. “And I guess I’ll take care of these later.” With a poof he was out the door.
Naruto reached his class with only two minutes to spare. He looked among the large group of student in the class. There we’re kids in different areas of the class talking casually amongst each other, he didn‘t know how to approach anyone so he took a seat at a desk in the far corner. As he sat he immediately noticed a pack of girls huddled into a circle.
Naruto went to the crowd to see what the commotion was. And there, right in the center, was his friend Sasuke. Naruto stared at his friend. Sasuke was poised in the middle He wore a bright white shirt and khaki shorts. His onyx eyes glistened from the sun. His hair was neatly parted and his skin was free of imperfections. Sasuke looked up from his seat utterly annoyed by all the screaming in his ear. He liked it in the beginning but now it was just too much. He saw Naruto’s blue eyes staring at him through the crowd, and stood up with a smile.
“Well I guess you’re busy right now, maybe we can hang out later.” Naruto said to him through the crowd of girls. They all turned to look at him with a glare in their eyes. They were all mad at the boy for taking Sasuke’s attention away from them. Naruto quickly walked away as one of the girls yelled at him “Leave Sasuke alone can’t you see we’re trying to have a conversation here.” Sasuke was so upset.
“Listen you, you have no right to talk to my best friend like that!” Sasuke sent angry eyes at them. He put his arms around Naruto waist. “It’s been a while, I missed you bro.” Naruto smiled brightly at him “I missed you too buddy how’ve you been?” but his smile faded as the girls became enraged. Sasuke turned around. “Will you girls buzz off and give us some room.”
At that moment Naruto became the boy hated by most of the girls, save a select few. Some of the girls found Naruto more attractive than the Uchiha kid. And why wouldn’t they. He wore bright orange pants as well a bright orange jacket over a black inner shirt. It highlighted his boyish features and sapphire eyes. Sasuke also felt that warm feeling in his tummy when he looked at Naruto.
“Alright class settle down. My name is Iruka Umino, but you can call me sensei Iruka.” Iruka looked over his new class and took note of each of the students. The desks were all spaced evenly except for Naruto’s and Sasuke’s which were pushed together. The boys were busy talking and laughing about what they did during the week to notice Iruka now standing next to them.
“Naruto, Sasuke, the desks are separated for a reason.” The two boys fell back in surprise, and the class laughed at them. Sasuke glared and immediatley the class was quiet. Then they moved the desks back to the original position.
“Hey Iruka sensei.” Iruka turned to Naruto “My dad says hi, and to make sure your chair is sturdy.” Iruka was now blushing at that. Class went on as it normally would with Naruto making a few new friends.
By lunch time Naruto had made friends with a few other people. Sitting with him were Kiba, Shika, Chouji, Hinata, and of course Sasuke. Two girls sat at a table behind Sasuke giggling like fools and it was so loud that it brought Naruto out of his conversation with Kiba. Naruto remembered the pink haired girl to be Sakura, but he forgot the blonde haired girls name.
Naruto was about to return to talk to Kiba when he noticed Sasuke looking off into the distance and not really paying attention to what the others were saying. Naruto stood up and pulled Sasuke’s hand. Sasuke got up and followed Naruto, unsure of where his friend was taking him.
“Are you ok Sasuke, you seem kinda out of it at the moment.” “Sorry I was just thinking about when I get home. I know no ones gonna be there until later and I…” Sasuke was kicking his foot in the dirt. “Say Sasuke me and my dad are gonna train after school, you wanna come?” “Huh I thought you didn’t know your father.” Naruto kind of stiffened for a while, “Kakashi just finished the paperwork so he can adopt me, so he’s my dad now.” “Oh ok. That sounds awesome then. Are you ok?” Sasuke looked into his eyes with real concern. “I didn’t mean to …“ Naruto smiled again “It‘s alright! This is gonna be so great hanging with you today”
They returned to their group and finished eating lunch. After school the two boys were heading to Naruto’s house.
“Naruto.”
“Yea Sasuke.”
“I’m still your best friend right. I mean I know you made a lot of friends today…so I was just wondering…”
“Sasuke you dork, of course you’re my best friend . I was just excited to meet other kids my age who didn’t treat me like crap.” Naruto took hold of Sasuke’s hand, and Sasuke stared down at it before tightening his grip and smiling at his friend. “Sasuke you were my first friend, and besides that I think that we have a lot more in common than anyone else I‘ve met, besides Kakashi of course.”
“Thanks Naruto.” Sasuke was starting to feel so many emotions going through his heart. He was just happy to be around Naruto. And he made a promise on that day to take care of his blonde friend. He knew what he felt went beyond friendship, but he couldn’t quite put a word to his emotions.
They reached Naruto’s apartment and Sasuke sat on the couch while Naruto began to do the laundry. He made Sasuke some hot tea while he finished cleaning the dishes from earlier that morning, then they talked with each other while waiting for Kakashi to get home.
Kakashi came home to find his son being held upside down by Sasuke. Sasuke let go of Naruto’s legs and Naruto landed hard on his ass.
“Hey what’d you do that for?” he rubbed his butt.
Naruto turned and saw his dad and greeted him. “Hey dad, me and Sasuke were practicing hand stands. It’s a lot harder than Iruka said it would be.”
Sasuke was panicking. He thought the man might be mad at him and Naruto for playing rather than training in there free time. As if sensing this Kakashi spoke up “You know Sasuke it’s ok to have fun every now and then. Especially around me, I don’t really like things getting boring too soon.” Sasuke took on a look of relief.
“So dad do you think you could help teach me and Sasuke how to walk in a hand stand?” “Sure son, let me just put away the rabbit I killed for dinner.” Naruto’s face turned pale. “Um I think I’ll skip dinner.” Kakashi laughed at that. “I was just joking Naruto. We’re gonna have some baked yakiniku. And your friend is welcome to stay for supper if he‘d like” Sasuke nodded his head eagerly at the mans offer. “Thank you Mr. Hatake.” “Please, just call me Kakashi. A friend of Naruto’s is a friend of mine.” Sasuke was starting to feel great affection for the man as well. He acted more like a father to Sasuke than his father had.
Several weeks had passed by, with Naruto and Sasuke becoming closer than ever. Almost able to think what the other was thinking without saying a word. It also became a routine for Sasuke to stay over for dinner, and at times Itachi would stay as well. But on this particular night there came a knock on the door.
Naruto had fallen asleep after watching a movie with Sasuke, so Sasuke gently lifted Naruto’s head from his shoulder so he could call for Kakashi to answer the door. However Kakashi was already at the door before he moved, so he allowed Naruto’s head to fall back to his shoulder as he continued to watch the movie. “Kakashi, the Hokage would like to have a word with you tomorrow at noon. The matter is urgent. Please try to be on time.”
Kakashi was known for being “fashionably late”, but he understood from the tone of the mans voice that it was serious. He nodded in agreement and closed his door.
“Sasuke you should get to bed soon alright."
He had bought Naruto a mattress for a bed since it was all they could afford. But Naruto told him it was more than he could ask for, and he was just happy to have somewhere to sleep at all. He lifted Naruto from the couch and laid him on his mattress.
“Itachi called and said your mom was okay with you spending the night here since you have some clothes here already.” Sasuke shut off the TV and hugged Kakashi goodnight. “Thanks for letting me stay over Kakashi. You and Naruto are more like my family then…” He trailed off again afraid that he said more then was needed. “It’s a pleasure to have you here Sasuke and besides you help burn off a lot of the energy Naruto has stored up. If you weren’t here he might be bouncing off the walls. So I guess it should be I who is thanking you. Good night Sasuke.”
Kakashi turned off the lights and headed for bed. Sasuke got into bed with Naruto and whispered into his ear. “Good night Naruto.” He paused and looked at the boy beneath him. Then slowly, as if unsure of himself he places a soft kiss on Naruto’s cheek. Naruto smiled in his sleep and hugged his pillow tighter to him. Sasuke laid next to Naruto and cuddle his friend into him. Their two young bodies only separated by the pillow between Naruto’s chest. As Sasuke closed his eyes he though ‘this feels so right... Just so right.’ And they lay in there sleep together, both with peaceful expressions on their face. But just as day turns to night, along with the good comes the bad.
