Sakura marched happily towards the bathhouse relishing in the fact that soon she’d be squeaky clean while Hinata walked quietly at her side. Her white gaze lifted to the darkening blanket of the sky. Her gaze shifted to the bath house as they entered. It seemed no one else was there; it was late so it was particularly unusual.

“Hinata can you help me?” Hinata looked towards Sakura who was trying to heal the scratches on her back. The memory of the earlier battle drifted back to Hinata as she healed the marks over Sakura’s back caused by the wire using shinobi. If Naruto’s shadow clone hadn’t been there…Hinata knew she should have gotten back to Sakura faster but even after she got there…

Hinata finished healing Sakura and went back to undressing herself. She stiffened as she felt cool hands on her arms but relaxed as she realized it was Sakura healing the cuts she’d received.

Hinata sunk into the warm water, her dark tresses clinging to her skin. She pulled the strands from her face and turned her eyes to the sky. She hadn’t been strong enough today.

She met her own foe in the forest. She dodged the initial onslaught of kunai and then the quick punches and kicks but he always had her at the disadvantage, she hadn’t had enough time to hit all his chakra points. She had finally gotten in a hit and was about to follow it with another round but she wasn’t fast enough. Before she knew it she had been trapped in a Genjutsu. Her world darkened and she was lost in depression.

If it hadn’t been for Sakura’s screaming and startling me I would have died Hinata thought. She had finished the enemy shinobi off quickly after that but still…On my own I would have died Hinata thought sadly loosing herself in her darkening thoughts her gaze fixated on the stars.

Sakura laid back into the warm water with her pink hair flowing around her. The warmth seeped into her muscles and uncoiled the tense knots that had formed. She smiled looking over toward Hinata and opening her mouth to speak. She stopped her gaze softening into concern for her friend and fellow shinobi. Sakura knew the girl had a hard time believing in herself but Sakura had never seen her look so lost and hopeless. Sakura couldn’t tell from where she was but she was sure the girl was trembling. Sakura suddenly remember that expression it was one she had felt many times as she watched the backs of her team-mates. It was a feeling of not being good enough, like you were the weak link in a chain kept from braking only because of the extra burden the other links took. She swam slowly over quietly.

“Hmmm you’re a lot like a star Hinata.” Sakura said quietly as she relaxed in the warm water beside the pondering dark hair kunoichi. Hinata turned her gaze to her friend. Sakura winced inwardly at the dark mist that seemed to hover over Hinata‘s vision. It hadn‘t been too long ago since that mist had clouded her own vision had it? “A small speck of light surrounded by darkness. You can’t let that darkness overwhelm you or your brilliance will die out. People may notice the moon and the sun before you but your still there, giving light in the darkness. A star isn’t meant to die. The light continues going forward through the night forever so that everyone can remember it‘s strength. You know a star is a sun just it‘s so far away that people don‘t always recognize it‘s brilliance and power. You’re a strong shinobi Hinata, even if others say differently, your light just hasn‘t met their blind eyes yet“Sakura ducked under the water and swam off towards the dividing wall leaving Hinata to her own thoughts.

Hinata turned her gaze back to the night sky and smiled to herself a bead of water running from her eye down the curve of her cheek and off her chin. A star shot across the night sky. She whispered a quiet wish

“Dobe” Sasuke commented and Naruto picked himself up off the floor.

“Don’t call be that! Bastard!” Naruto growled throwing a punch at the grinning Uchiha.

“Then stop being one” He sighed ducking out of the way of another blow.

“I wasn’t being one. You tripped me!” His fist finally collided with Sasuke’s side sending the jounin back a couple feet.

Sasuke held Naruto in a headlock. Naruto reversed the move and flipped Sasuke to the ground. Both boys rolled around together beating each other senseless. Kakashi sat safely on a windowsill reading his favourite book. This was a common scene after all. One boy (usually Sasuke) would get the other mad and the mad one (usually Naruto) would start the fight. The boys would roll around taking out anyone unfortunate enough to be in there path until they were both exhausted or one of the rare few who could broke them up. Naruto flopped onto his back and stopped moving. Sasuke smiled raising his fist to deal the winning strike.

“Sakura could have died today”

Sasuke’s fist froze centimetres from Naruto’s face. “Hinata was there”

“Only afterwards. A kunai nearly hit her if my shadow clone hadn’t been there…”

Sasuke stood “yea whatever. Like she’d die that easy” then walked to the door.

“Where are you going?”

“Just a walk… uncle” He closed the door behind himself.

“Eh?” Naruto stared at the door confused, the significance of the Uchiha’s actions completely passing over his spiky blond head.

Kakashi watched Sasuke pass by on the street below.
