Chapter 4: Stalemates

‘Sasuke’s Thoughts’

“…” talking

‘Why the hell does he look so nervous?’ I ask myself for the tenth time as watch Naruto from my perch in the trees.

So far my decision to shadow Naruto has yielded no fruit. Other than the disturbed look on his face, nothing out of the ordinary has happened. He woke up at the same time. He got ready for the day the same way. And he is now waiting at the same training grounds he and Shino always use.

Everything appears to be as it should be. The only strange happening is the look on Naruto’s face. 'Why is the dobe so scared?’ I contemplate. 'Is Shino threatening him? Is Shino the problem?’

It is not long before Shino appears on the horizon. My eyes narrow on Naruto as he begins to wring his hands and outwardly portray extreme nervousness. As I turn my gaze to examine Shino, I activate my sharingan. I inspect him from head to toe, looking for any menace or threat towards Naruto. At first glance, I see nothing. But soon I notice the tiny bugs crawling over the skin around his neck. His bugs eat his excess chakra that means he is exuding chakra. Simple walking does not produce enough chakra for the bugs to consume. I have walked with Shino many times, I would have noticed this side affect. The fact remains, Shino is exuding chakra for some reason.

‘Is he going to attack my dobe?’ I ask myself softly, as I prepare to rip Shino’s heart out should the need arise. The more I analyze Shino’s chakra usage, the more I realize that the level is too low to be the beginning of an attack. Still, this insight doesn’t relax me. ‘Why is he using unnecessary chakra? The only time I have seen him lose control of his chakra is when we have sex, and even then it is not enough chakra to summons his bugs.’

I settle back and try to take stock of the situation. Naruto is nervous. Shino is unconsciously producing chakra. ‘What the hell is going on between these two?’ I snarl to myself.

I faintly hear Shino ask Naruto about training. My eyes narrow to mere slits as I watch Naruto give a start at Shino’s question.

When Naruto practically yells, “Hell, no-” It becomes absolutely clear there is something going on between the two that I was unaware of.

I feel confusion well up when Shino says a little too loudly, “I think we should train some place different. Follow me. We have special training grounds at the Aburame compound that will help you detect the chakra of my bugs. I promised to show you, remember?”

‘Train someplace different? What the fuck?’

I can see Naruto’s initial confusion, then his body jerks and stiffens. He follows Shino at a quick pace. ‘Naruto didn’t expect that suggestion either. Whatever is going on between them is new.’ I think to myself trying to clear up some of my confusion.

As I move to follow them, I can feel my anger building. ‘Training at the Aburame grounds? What the hell is going on here?’

I can feel my anger building as my mind wanders through all the possible reasons why Shino wants to move the training from the team 7 grounds to Shino’s compound. Then it strikes me. 'Fucking hell.’ I think, ‘I won’t be able to follow them without Shino detecting me. He might not know I am here now, but he will definitely know if I step foot on his clan’s ground. FUCK!’ I almost scream internally.

I watch them murmur something to each other, but I can’t make out the words. Naruto tenses up further and I wish I did hear the exchange. I can see he is afraid by how he is carrying himself, how he is walking. ‘What the fuck is Shino doing to my dobe?’ If I wasn’t so certain Shino was the cause of Naruto’s distress last night and his fear today I would move in and remove Naruto from this situation. But I need to know why Naruto is afraid. ‘What is Shino doing to him?’

That means I have to wait. Shadowing is a waiting game. Whatever Shino is doing, Naruto is going to have to suffer it one more time, just so I can find out what is going on. ‘But I promise you dobe. Shino was dead the minute you looked at him with fear. I will not have you live in fear of any man.’ I think protectively. ‘He will die for the suffering he has caused you.’

As Naruto and Shino enter the Aburame compound, I circle the outskirts of the land looking for a spot that gives me a view of the training ground they are going to use. It doesn’t take me long before I locate the perfect hiding spot.

With sharingan activated, I wait. Even as Naruto grows more and more distressed and Shino’s chakra seems to become more and more erratic, I wait. I wait through the looks Shino gives Naruto that look very much like caring. I wait while Shino takes off his glasses, something he never does with someone he is not involved with in some close way. All the while, I can feel my rage growing. But, still…I wait.

And then I hear it. I hear Naruto shout, “No help!? No help with this fear, these lies, his affair.” And though the last part was spoken softly, it sounded the loudest to me. ‘Oh God, he knows.’

I feel all the air leave my body as Shino looks directly at me as he says loud enough for me to hear, “Hn, his affairs.”

I feel each of Shino’s words like a stab wound. I can’t help but notice how unsurprised Naruto is by Shino’s statement. ‘He knows. My God, he knows!! How long has he known? When did he find out?’ I question myself in a panic.

As my mind begins to run through the beginning of Naruto’s strange behavior, I picture Naruto after I returned from Shino’s telling lies and looking devastated. ‘He knew then.’ I think in dismay. I think briefly about the scene I walked in on. When I left Naruto’s clothes were scattered all around the room. When I came back- ‘Oh shit! Naruto saw us. That’s why Shino was so distracted. He knew Naruto was there. He let him see us.’ I could feel the rage continue to build up in me. ‘How could he do this to Naruto!? Naruto can’t possibly understand what was going on between me and Shino last night? He could never understand how little Shino means to me. He’ll automatically think I want Shino! It’ll break him!’

As I try to process that Naruto knows about Shino and I, for a moment I feel remorse and helplessness wash over me stealing away my rage. ‘I’m going to have to hurt you dobe,’ I think taking stock of all the things Shino has fucked up. I would have protected him from this part of myself. 'What’s done is done. Now, it is going to be much harder for us to come together. But I will not let you go because of this, dobe. I don’t care how much you want to leave.’ My rage returns with twice its former strength as I focus my attention on the real culprit.

‘Fucking Shino, I told you I would kill you if you ever told Naruto. I do not make empty threats.’ I think coldly as my rage continues to grow at Shino’s betrayal. I sit waiting. Seething in my rage. ‘I refuse to expose Naruto to more of my dark side than he has already become aware of,’ I think as I stop myself from killing Shino right then and there. ‘I’ll wait until Naruto is gone. He does not need to see what I am going to do to Shino.’

When my eye catches Shino’s move to touch Naruto’s face, I lose all control. Jealousy wells up as I start slowly for Shino crossing onto Aburame land; slowly stalking up to my prey. ‘Nobody but me touches Naruto like that, you fucking bastard.’

I watch Shino tell Naruto to go home as he turns and starts walking in my direction. I know that Naruto hasn’t seen me yet. But Shino knows exactly from what direction I am approaching and is blocking his view. Shino knew where I was here the entire time.

As Naruto begins to walk away, I almost call him back. ‘It is too bad he is not going to witness what I plan to do to his little boyfriend.’

I resist the urge to call Naruto back and make him watch what allowing Shino to touch him will cost Shino. ‘I will deal with Naruto after Shino. His suffering will not be so quick.’ I think, as my eyes catch Shino’s. He stops walking towards me the instant Naruto disappears in the surrounding forest.

I am not a fool. I know that I am on an Aburame training ground. This is the best place for Shino to fight me. The amount of insects swarming under these grounds could kill anyone in a matter of seconds. ‘Hn…but I am not anyone.’ I think with a snarl. ‘You have bitten off more than you can chew this time Shino.’

“He deserved to know,” Shino calls out.

“I decide what he does and does not deserve, Shino- not you,” I snarl. “I warned you of the consequences of telling Naruto about us.”

“I didn't tell him. He followed you yesterday night,” Shino begins raising his hand to adjust his glasses. “You never said I was supposed to guard your secret. All you said was that I could never tell your secret,” Shino finishes with a shrug.

I come to a halt 15 feet from him. “Am I supposed to be placated by that technicality,” I say in a rage.

“I was hoping,” Shino smirks.

“Are you amused, Shino?” I hiss as I disappear and reappear in front of Shino. My hand wraps around his throat as I lift him from the ground choking him. I vaguely wonder why he is not fighting, but I just assume that he is going to rely upon some bug attack. Shino is in for a big surprised when he realizes that I made my chakra poisonous to his little creatures. One taste of my chakra will kill them instantly.

When I initially returned to Konoha and I realized I did not have an effective defense against the Aburame’s blood limit. I immediately began working on countermeasures to their bug attacks. I found a way to turn the content of my chakra into poison and exude it through my pores. Any bug within a certain radius of me will drop dead. I smirk at Shino as I begin to exude chakra. I feel his bugs starting to drop off me.

“Don’t underestimate me, Aburame,” I hiss as my hand tightens around Shino’s throat. “Ordinarily, I make people suffer who cross me. But I have no time to waste killing you. I still have to go take care of Naruto.”

Just as I begin to squeeze harder, the body I am choking bursts apart flinging dying chakra bugs everywhere.

A voice calls from the clearing, “I am not going to fight you Sasuke. I am not a fool. I will not win. But do not underestimate me either. Though I may not win, neither will you.”

I look over to see Shino standing twenty feet away to the left of me. The longer I look the more Shinos emerge. He multiplies the bug filled bags of flesh until I am staring at 50 Shino’s surrounded by thousands of bugs ready to form other Shino’s.

“You won’t always have this many bugs at you disposal,” I hiss, my body trembling with my unspent rage. ‘I am not a fool either. It would be a waste of time to try to kill all of these bug dummies, when the real Shino could be anywhere.’ “You won’t always have home advantage."

The Shino nearest to me chuckles, “I don’t need home advantage. This is my clan’s ultimate technique. Only a master Aburame can execute this technique. I can transfer my consciousness through bugs. I can split myself so many times it would be impossible to kill all of me, and if there is one piece of me left. One bug you didn’t kill, then I can recreate myself- flesh and all. I am the only one to have mastered this technique in almost 400 years. You see Uchiha, you are not the only genius in Konoha.”

I growl in frustration as I think of ways to kill every bug I see. ‘I can’t. It’s impossible.’

“I can see by the look on your face you are finally beginning to understand my defense. The Aburame clan is a defense clan. We are the clan that keep the walls of this city safe, what makes you think that we cannot also keep ourselves safe,” Shino says mockingly. “It’s a stalemate, Sasuke. Deal with it.”

My eyes narrow at Shino’s pronouncement, “It is not a stalemate. You will need to spend the rest of your life on guard. Because I will kill you when you least expect it.”

I watch the ‘talking Shino’s’ eyes flash at the threat, “Ditto, Sasuke. Ditto.”

I relax to a mocking nonchalant pose. ‘I know when there is no reason to fight. And today, Shino has shown me there can be no winners. But his days are numbered.’

“Don’t be so cocky, Shino. You know as well as I that I never let my guard down. You on the other hand are softer than me, having lived your entire existence in Konoha. I will kill you. It is only a matter of time,” I say in a matter of fact manner.

Shino’s eyes stare into for a couple seconds before he shrugs, “Could be? Could be not? Whose to say?”

I smile a crooked smile that has nothing to do with pleasure and everything to do with pain, “Well, if I can’t keep you away from Naruto. Then, I will just have to keep Naruto away from you. If you’ll excuse me,” I say as I turn to walk away

I hear Shino’s almost unnoticable halting breath and pause to turn towards the ‘talking-Shino’ nearest me. Throwing his own words back in his face, “I can see by the look on your face you are finally beginning to understand my offense. I will always have Naruto. You know it and so do I.” I turn back around to leave the training area following after Naruto, “So, no, Shino. This is not a stalemate,” I call over my shoulder. “Maybe its better this way,” I continue as I walk away, “Now you can witness the kind of life you have chosen for Naruto. I’m sure he’ll want to thank you for it later.”

As to the perspective in this fic, I like the multiple perspective fics when all of the perspectives further the story along. That seems to be the hard part, each perspective needs to add something to the story or why are we looking through that perspective? I hope I am pulling the perspective thing off, I worry.
